Relationship between hoof parameters and racing time in racehorses (경주마의 발굽지표와 경주기록과의 관계)

  • The hoof parameters - hoof angle, toe length, heel length, hoof width, hoof length, heel width, hoof circumference - of 1372 Thoroughbred racehorses in Seoul racecourse were measured. Each parameter was compared with the racing time. The parameters were as follows: fore hoof angle $50.1{\pm}0.09^{\circ}$, hind hoof angle $50.1{\pm}0.08^{\circ}$; fore toe fength $82.8{\pm}0.21mm$, hind toe length $88.8{\pm}0.23mm$; fore heel length $28.6{\pm}0.19mm$, hind heel length $24.5{\pm}0.19mm$; fore hoof width $130.9{\pm}0.30mm$, hind hoof width $125.7{\pm}0.28mm$; fore hoof length $133.3{\pm}0.22mm$, hind hoof length $28.1{\pm}0.22mm$; fore heel width $61.2{\pm}0.32mm$, hind heel width $67.9{\p}0.35mm$; fore hoof circumference $264.2{\pm}0.48mm$, hind hoof circumference $253.8{\pm}0.40mm$. Apart from the hoof angle, the hoof parameters increased in proportion to the body weight. The parameters of forelimbs affected the racing time more than those of hindlimbs. The correlation between hoof parameters and racing time was shown more in short-distance race (1000M) than in long-distance race(2200M). The parameters that had correlation with racing time were hoof width, hoof length, heel width of forelimbs and heel width of hindlimbs.

Effects of Change of Body Weight on Racing Time in Thoroughbred Racehorses (더러브렛 경주마의 체중변화가 주파기록에 미치는 효과)

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the effects of change in body weight on racing time in Thoroughbred racehorses, using total 8,197 horses and 155,656 racing records collected from Korea Racing Association(KRA). The average body weight of the racehorses was 449kg, and the average body weights of stallion, gelding and mare were 460kg, 454kg and 441kg, respectively. Body weight of stallion was the greatest. The considerable loss of body weight was observed in March, April and May for mare, and in May, Jun and July for stallion and gelding. Overall, the body weight of the racehorses decreased in spring and summer, and increased in autumn and winter. The estimated heritability and repeatability for racing time were 0.237 and 0.525, respectively. The heritability for body weight estimated from total records was 0.612. The estimated heri- tabilities for body weight were 0.472, 0.578 and 0.555 for gelding, stallion and mare, respectively. As the change of body weight was greater than ±10kg, the racing time increased significantly. When the body weight changed more than ±20kg in comparison to the changes of body weight of ±5kg, the racing time increased by 0.3 second. When the change of body weight was ±0.5% of body weight, the racing time was the best(fastest). When the change of body weight was more than ±2.5%, racing performance decreased considerably.

Retrospective Analysis of Equine General Anesthesia Performed at Korea Racing Authority (한국마사회에서 실시한 말의 전신마취에 대한 후향 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the results of inhalation anesthesia performed at the equine hospital of Korea Racing Authority (KRA) and to find out the influencing factors on mortality during and/or after inhalation anesthesia. Among 585 cases of anesthesia, orthopedic surgery (410) was performed the most frequently, followed by colic surgery (85) and upper airway surgery (45). Twenty out of 585 horses were either euthanized or died during and/or after anesthesia. Among those twenty horses, fourteen horses received colic surgery, three received orthopedic surgery, and three others received upper airway surgery. The major causes of mortality were rupture of intestine in colic surgery and airway obstruction during recovery in upper airway surgery. Myopathy, refracture, laminitis were the causes of mortality in orthopedic surgery. Consequently, the horses that received colic and upper airway surgeries showed significantly high mortality rate rather than horses that received orthopedic surgery (p < 0.01). According to the results, horses that received colic surgery showed the highest mortality rate from euthanasia due to poor and grave prognosis. To reduce the perioperative mortality of horses, it is recommended to perform perioperative intensive care for colic surgery and careful monitoring for upper airway surgery during recovery.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters and Annual Trends for Racing Times of Thoroughbred Racehorses (더러브렛 경주마의 주파기록에 대한 유전모수 추정과 연도별 개량량 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and annual trends on the racing performance of Thoroughbred horses by a statistical analysis of the resulting records. We used the racing results of 245,979 observations for 13,458 horses recorded in 19 years of race held at Seoul and Busan racing tracks, provided by Korea Racing Authority. After a careful adjustment of some variables such as racing times, jockey and trainer numbers and the average prize a horse won, we selected significant factors that explain the result of racing records of a horse by stepwise AIC and BIC methods. The estimated heritability and repeatability were 0.322 and 0.332, respectively. The average of annual phenotypic and genetic improvement was -0.166 seconds and -0.161 seconds, respectively. Based on the statistical approach, we established reasonable animal model of well-set variables, which is important in the study on estimating performance of racing horses.

  • This study is about the Korean Jockey's uniform, etc. and horse riding costume as the traditional riding culture grows. I studied informations from the Korea Racing Association's equestrian park, equine museum and Seoul Racecourse Trainers & Jockey's Association. The international regulations of riding costume are compared with Korean regulations, and I consulted some reference books, materials of sports wear and catalogues of some brands regarding horse equipment. The contents includes ; 1. Analysis of informations about horse racing 2. Study of racing, for detail comparative analysis on the following aspects ; -Symbolism, riding costume of jockey, that is, color·pattern·and some formal designs. 3. Suggestion for reasonable and fashionable riding costumes. In the aspects of design, there have not been any historical records, and material adjustments about riding costume in Korea. Therefore we should make more efforts to do developing our traditional costume culture. The result o this study is as follows ; 1. Riding is the sport of etiquette and manners. 2. Most of riding wears are the casual wear centered foreign licenced brands. 3. Study and investment upon specialized material development and processing technology are in demand 4. The need of the consumers are to be satisfied by the quality improvement of the native products design. In addition, we perform to horse racing which is fine play and leisure sports in current society. The horse riding will be a popular sports such as golf, wind surfing, skiing, etc. with the period including lots of kinds of leisure.

Strangulating Large Colon Volvulus: A Diagnostic and Surgical Challenge in a Post-Partum Thoroughbred Mare

  • An 11-year-old thoroughbred post-partum broodmare presented with the symptoms of colic. The physical and clinical examinations indicated a large colon displacement or volvulus. Immediate surgical intervention was performed, and a strangulating large colon volvulus (LCV) was defined as a volvulus of >540° in the counterclockwise direction. After correcting and assessing the gut viability, approximately 80% of the entire large colon was resected and anastomosed using an end-to-end technique. With supportive care after surgery, the horse regained its appetite and vitality without significant clinical complications and was discharged on postoperative day 9. This report presents the first surgical correction using a large colon resection and anastomosis (LCRA) and the critical care for a strangulating LCV in a horse in Korea. This case enhances the current knowledge of clinical LCV and the related considerations for treatment.

Motion Planning of Autonomous Racing Vehicles for Mimicking Human Driver Characteristics (운전자 주행 특성 모사를 위한 트랙 한계 자율 주행 차량의 거동 계획 알고리즘)

  • This paper presents a motion planning algorithm of autonomous racing vehicles for mimicking the characteristics of a human driver. Time optimal maneuver of a race car has been actively studied as a major research area over the past decades. Although the time optimization problem yields a single time series solution of minimum time maneuver inputs for the vehicle, human drivers achieve similar lap times while taking various racing lines and velocity profiles. In order to model the characteristics of a specific driver and reproduce the motion, a stochastic motion planning framework based on kernelized motion primitive is introduced. The proposed framework imitates the behavior of the generated reference motion, which is based on a small number of human demonstration laps along the racetrack using Gaussian mixture model and Gaussian mixture regression. The mean and covariance of the racing line and velocity profile mimicking the driver are obtained by accumulating the outputs tested at equidistantly sampled input points. The results confirmed that the obtained lateral and longitudinal motion simulates the driver's driving characteristics, which are feasible for actual vehicle test environments.

A Study on the Horse Owner‘s Colours(Horse racing silks) (경마 기수복식 연구)

  • This study has investigated the Horse Culture and the Horse Owner‘s colours(Horse racing silks or Jockey’s costume). The results of this study revealed that the jockey‘s costume of western as well as Korean’s. According to the “International agreement on breeding and racing” in order to avoid too much variation between basic colours, grades of colours and colour combinations, a standard for owner‘s colours and jacket design has been agreed. Racing colours registered before the present agreement will however be allowed. Every horse coming from abroad runs in the registered colours of its owner in the country where the horse is trained. There are unique Korean jockey’s costume, They are going to change jockey‘s costume to Owner’s colours.

  • Racing game requires plausible physics model that can be simulated in realtime. Minor artifacts in racing games are easily noticed, and any kinds of games should work interactively. It is difficult to model the accurate tire-ground physics and to integrate the model into realtime environments. In this paper, an efficient and effective 'imaginary wall' model was proposed. The method can be easily implemented because of the simplicity of the physical model used, and the result of the simulation is realistic enough for the racing games.
