  • This study was conducted to develop site index equations and to estimate productive areas of Quercus acutissima by ecoprovince in Korea using environmental factors. Using the large data set from both a digital forest site map and a climatic map, a total of 48 environmental factors including 19 climatic variables were regressed on site index to develop site index equations. Four to six environmental factors for Quercus acutissima by ecoprovince were selected as independent variables in the final site index equations. The result showed that the coefficients of determination for site index equations were ranged from 0.30 to 0.41, which seem to be relatively low but good enough for the estimation of forest stand productivity. The site index equations developed in this study were also verified by three evaluation statistics such as the estimation bias of model, precision of model, and mean square error of measurement. According to the evaluation statistics, it was found that the site index equations fitted well to the test data sets with relatively low bias and variation. As a result, it was concluded that the site index equations were well capable of estimating site quality. Based on the site index equations of Quercus acutissima by ecoprovince, the productive areas by ecoprovince were estimated by applying GIS technique to the digital forest site map and climate map. In addition, the distribution of productive areas by ecoprovince was illustrated by using GIS technique.

  • This study was conducted to compare chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic abilities, and ribulose-diphosphate (RuDP) carboxylase activities of Quercus acutissima seedlings grown with and without cotyledons under different light intensities and different nutrient levels. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. Chlorophyll contents were not significantly different among the light intensities except for 25% of full sunlight at the last harvest time. 2. RuDP carboxylase activity increased with increasing light intensity. 3. Photosynthetic abilities of seedlings grown under full and 75% of sunlight were significantly higher than that under 25% of full sunlight. 4. RuDP carboxylase activity was more related with chlorophyll a contents(r=0.792) than chlorophyll b contents(r=0.314). 5. RuDP carboxylase activities of the seedlings received at 1 or 2% addition rates of nutrients under 75% of full sunlight were higher than that at 0.5% addition rates.

  • This study was conducted to develop a stem volume table for Quercus acutissima in Korea by using Kozak's stem taper equation. In total, 2700 tree samples were collected around the country, and growth performance was investigated through compiling data on diameters by stem height and stem analysis. In order to test the stem taper equation's fitness, the fitness index (FI), bias, and mean absolute deviation (MAD) were analyzed. The fitness of the equation was estimated at 97%, bias as 0.017, and MAD turned out to be 1.118, respectively. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant volume difference between the current volume table and the new volume table (p = 0.0008, <0.005). The result indicates that using the new volume table that reflects the actual forest will reduce the loss when assessing wood resources and will improve the accuracy of forest statistics for national and local governments. A stem volume table, the main result of this research, which is utilized in the estimated stem taper equation, will provide growth information for Quercus acutissima, one of the main broadleaf species in Korea, and will function as a management indicator for rational forest management.

  • In Korea, Quercus acutissima distributed in good condition with high nutrients and moisture content, but Quercus variabilis in dry soil or rock habitate. In order to understand this ecological distribution of Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis, we cultivated the seedlings of two oak species treated with light, soil moisture and nutrient gradients each four level, from May to October in glass house. Then we measured the ecological niche breadth and niche overlap of the two species, and analyzed the relationship of competition using cluster analysis and PCA ordination. Ecological niche breadths of Q. acutissima under moisture and nutrient treatments were slightly wider than those under light one. Among 14 characters measured, 6 characters related with length items were wider in all the environmental treatments, but 8 characters connected with weight terms narrower in light treatment. Ecological niche breadths of Q. variabilis under moisture and nutrient treatment were wider than those of light one. Ecological niche of Q. acutissima was wider than those of Q. variabilis in all the environmental treatments. Ecological overlap between two species was higher with a range of 0.87$\sim$0.92, especially higher in soil moisture factor. These results means that Q. acutissima is more competitive than Q. variabilis, especially in soil moisture condition. Two species were ordinated with distinct group based on 9 characters. From these results, it can be explained that what Q. variabilis distributed in bad soil condition is due to the escape strategy, because of its low competitive ability to Q. acutissima in natural communities.

  • Results from study on physiological responses to $SO_2$ of Quercus spp. selected for restoration of vegetation damaged by air pollution in the field study were as follows. Tolerance of Quercus aliena, Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica used in this study to $SO_2$ was higher in that order and tolerance of these plants to $SO_2$ was high comparatively among trees composing of major forest vegetation of Korea including natural forests and plantations. Stomatal resistance of these plants was increased after exposure to $SO_2$ and range of increase was different among species. From discrepancy between order of tolerance to $SO_2$ and range of increase in stomatal resistance, we were estimated that resistance mechanisms of Quercus spp. were different among species as mechanism originated in avoidance and resistance, respectively. Water potential of plant leaves reduced after exposure to $SO_2$, degree of reduction accorded with order of tolerance to $SO_2$. Reduction of water potential of plants after exposure to $SO_2$ was initiated before appearance of visible damage in plant leaves and water potential of plants exposed to $SO_2$ of low concentration, in which plants were not showed viaible damage was also reduced.

  • Emission rates of biogenic hydrocarbon emitted from broad-leaved trees grown at Jeju Island were estimated using a dynamic enclosure method. Leaf temperature, PAR and relative humidity were monitored during the sampling time. The emission rates of isoprene and monoterpene were measured for five plants(Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus serrata, Styrax japonicus, Quercus acutissima, Quercus crispula) during the sampling period at the Halla mountain sites. Among five tree species, the highest isoprene emission rate of 10.60 ${\mu}g\;gdw^{-1}hr^{-1}$ was observed for Quercus serrata. The seasonal emission rates were the highest during summer and the emission of isoprene was highly affected by light and temperature variations. The highest emission rate of isoprene was occurred between 13:00 and 14:00, but isoprene was not emitted in nighttime because of the absence of light.

  • Vegetation structure of Sungheung fortress in Buyeo was investigated to suggest a desirable management proposal. Forset communities by phytosociological method were classified into Pinus densiflora community, Quercus serrata community and Quercus aliena community. The importance value of Pinus densiflora, Quercus aliena, Quercus serrata, Quercus variabilis, Castanea crenata, Styrax japonica, Quercus acutissima and Prunus sargentii were 34.81, 13.57, 12.63, 6.73, 6.40, 4.70, 4.54 and 3.65. According to breast diameter analysis results, it is expected that the importance value of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spec. will be continuosly increased. It should be prepared that vegetation management plan over the castle wall should be considered before the repair or restoration of castle wall. Vegetation management around castle wall should be carried out according to the mid or long-term plan and it would be needed to consider the gradual changes from planted Pinus rigida to the historical vegetation of Pinus densiflora.
