Stress Analysis in the Elastic-Plastic Analysis of Railway Wheels

  • Fatigue and wear in wheels is often due to the forces and loading. These certainly have fundamental effects on reducing the wheel life and increasing the costs related to repairing and maintenance. Modeling and stress analysis of a wheel sample existing in the Iranian fleet have been performed in its contact with U33 and UIC60 rails. The results have been reviewed and analyzed in elastic and elastic-plastic phase and under static (railcar weight) and quasi static loads. Moreover, effects of wheel diameter, axle load, wheel material, rail type are analyzed.

  • The priority of Crashworthiness concept for rolling stock is progressively increasing to reduce the damage of drivers and passengers as well as the car. For the first step of this research, the analysis of the crash elements have been performed. Also the longitudinal collapse force and mode is important point for whole carbody structure to guarantee the lower force at end part rather than the main passenger area. The carbody quasi-static collapse analysis and real test has been performed in the research. The crash elements FEA and test has been performed as well. After the initial Analysis and test, the correlation analysis between the FEA and test has been performed by FEA tunning. All this result will be used for real crashworthiness design for carbody structure.

Fracture Toughness Evaluation of Natural Gas Pipeline under the Cathodic Protection

  • For the corrosion protection of the natural gas transmission pipelines, two methods are used, cathodic protection and coating technique. In the case of cathodic protection, defects are embrittled by occurring hydrogen at the crack tip or material surface. It is however very important to evaluate whether cracks in the embrittled area can grow or not, especially in weld metal. In this work, on the basis of elastic plastic fracture mechanics, we performed the CTOD testing with various test conditions, such as testing rate and potential. The CTOD of the base metal and the weld metal showed a strong dependence of the test conditions. The CTOD decreased with decreasing testing rate and with increasing cathodic potential. The morphology of the fracture surface showed the quasi-cleavage at low testing rate and cathodic overprotection. The low CTOD was caused by hydrogen embrittlement at crack tip.

  • Current-voltage (I-V) measurements of crystalline silicon solar cells was conducted under dark conditions with the temperature range of 260 K~350 K. Using the calculation method, we extracted the crucial factors of ideality factor (n) and activation energy (Ea) to investigate the carrier conducting path in the space charge region (SCR) and the quasi-neutral region (QNR). Values of n were decreased with increasing temperature in both SCR and QNR. We also conformed that the value of Ea of SCR was larger than that of QNR about 0.4 eV. The temperature dependence of n indicates that the carrier conducting path is dominated by carrier recombination-generation in the SCR region than in the QNR region.

  • This paper proposes a SSSC based on multi-bridge inverters. The dynamic characteristic of the proposed SSSC was analyzed by EMTP simulation and a scaled hardware model, assuming that the SSSC is inserted in the transmission line of the one-machine-infinite-bus power system. The proposed SSSC has 6 multi-bridge inverters per phase, which generates 13 pulses for each half period of power frequency. The proposed SSSC generates a quasi-sinusoidal output voltage by 90 degree phase shift to the line current. The proposed SSSC does not require the coupling transformer for voltage injection, and has a flexibility in operation voltage by increasing the number of series connection.

  • The proper design of man-machine systems requires as much understanding of the human element as of the machine. Although the modern systems engineer can obtain a very high degree of repeatability and accuracy for the characteristics of a machine, these of the human elements are much less well known. Due to the complexity and importance of modern man-machine systems, this difficult problem has recently received increasing attention. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the human operator have been newly determined by impulse estimation using Pseuo-random binnary signals as a test signal and the quasi-linear human operator models used as an element of a closed-loop control system adopted from McRuer & Krendel and Bekey. Also the techniques and instruments are presented for correlating the actual characteristics of the constructed system with anticipated theoretical values. Consequently, in spite of many problems remain yet, experimental results were very satisfactory.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can achieve the increasing of performances by using an adaptive power allocation. The related previous work limited the transmit antenna number because orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) yield full transmit rate only for two transmit antennas. We extend a robust system under imperfect channel estimation for four transmission antennas with maintaining a full transmission rate.

  • In this paper, the seismic performance of SRC piers for near fault motions was evaluated by shaking table tests on small scale models. Dead load of the superstructures was simulated by axial prestress at the center of the column section. A mass frame linked with steel bars was fabricated to include the effect of superstructure mass. Friction of the mass frame when it moves was minimized by special details and it was proved before tests. Five pier models with 400mm diameter were tested by increasing the acceleration of the near fault motion. Test results were discussed and compared with previous quasi-static tests.

  • Based on quantum transport theory, we investigated theoretically the magnetic field dependence of the quantum optical transition of quasi 2-dimensional Landau splitting system, in CdS and ZnO Through the analysis of the current work, we found the increasing properties of the cyclotron resonance line-profiles (CRLPs) which show the absorption power and the cyclotron resonance line-widths (CRLWs) with the magnetic field in CdS and ZnO We also found that that CRLWs, γtotal(B) of CdS < γtotal(B) of ZnO in the magnetic field region B < 15 Tesla.
