  • The NTRU cryptosystem proposed by Hoffstein et al. in 1990s is a public key cryptosystem based on hard lattice problems. NTRU has many advantages compared to other public key cryptosystems such as RSA and elliptic curve cryptosystems. For example, it guarantees high speed encryption and decryption with the same level of security, and there is no known quantum computing algorithm for speeding up attacks against NTRD. In this paper, we analyze the security of NTRU against the simple power analysis (SPA) attack and the statistical power analysis (STPA) attack such as the correlation power analysis (CPA) attack First, we implement NTRU operations using NesC on a Telos mote, and we show how to apply CPA to recover a private key from collected power traces. We also suggest countermeasures against these attacks. In order to prevent SPA, we propose to use a nonzero value to initialize the array which will store the result of a convolution operation. On the other hand, in order to prevent STPA, we propose two techniques to randomize power traces related to the same input. The first one is random ordering of the computation sequences in a convolution operation and the other is data randomization in convolution operation.

  • In this review, recent foodborne outbreaks caused by viruses in the Republic of Korea (2010-2019) were analyzed. The human norovirus was found to be the major foodborne virus causing an average of 94.9% of the viral outbreaks. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with electrophoresis has been widely used to detect viruses, but several rapid detection methods, including real-time PCR, multiplex PCR, and quantum dot assay, have also been suggested. For norovirus inactivation studies, surrogates such as murine norovirus and feline calicivirus have been widely used to identify the reduction rate owing to the limitations in laboratory cultivation. Conversely, direct cell infection studies have been conducted for other foodborne viruses such as adenovirus, astrovirus, rotavirus, and hepatitis A or E virus. Moreover, virucidal mechanisms using various physical and chemical treatments have been revealed. These recent studies suggest that rapid in situ detection and effective control are valuable for ensuring food safety against viral infections.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is a typical health hazard, resulting in about 7 million premature deaths each year. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the major air pollutants, and the combustion process with sulfur-containing fuels generates it. Measuring SO2 generation in large combustion environments in real time and optimizing reduction facilities based on measured values are necessary to reduce the compound's presence. This paper describes the concentration measurement for SO2, a particulate matter precursor, using a wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). This study employed a quantum cascade laser operating at 7.6 ㎛ as a light source. It demonstrated concentration measurement possibility using 64 multi-absorption lines between 7623.7 and 7626.0 nm. The experiments were conducted in a multi-pass cell with a total path length of 28 and 76 m at 1 atm, 296 K. The SO2 concentration was tested in two types: high concentration (1000 to 5000 ppm) and low concentration (10 ppm or less). Additionally, the effect of H2O interference in the atmosphere on the measurement of SO2 was confirmed by N2 purging the laser's path. The detection limit for SO2 was 3 ppm, and results were compared with the electronic chemical sensor and nondispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor.

  • Background: In Japan, new regulations that revise the dose limit for the lens of the eye (hereafter the lens), operational quantities, and measurement positions for the lens dose were enforced in April 2021. Based on the international safety standards, national guidelines, the results of the Radiation Safety Research Promotion Fund of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, and other studies, the Working Group of Radiation Protection Standardization Committee, the Japan Health Physics Society (JHPS) developed a guideline for radiation dose monitoring for the lens. Materials and Methods: The Working Group of the JHPS discussed the criteria of non-uniform exposure and the management criteria set not to exceed the dose limit for the lens. Results and Discussion: In July 2020, the JHPS guideline was published. The guideline consists of three parts: main text, explanations, and 26 examples. In the questions, the corresponding answers were prepared, and specific examples were provided to enable similar cases to be addressed. Conclusion: With the development of the guideline on radiation dose monitoring of the lens, radiation managers and workers will be able to smoothly comply with revised regulations and optimize radiation protection.

  • The safe driving reward system aims to reduce the loss of life and property by reducing the occurrence of accidents by motivating safe driving and encouraging active participation by providing direct reward to vehicle drivers who have performed safe driving. In the case of the existing digital tachograph, the goal is to limit dangerous driving by recording the driving status of the vehicle whereas the safe driving reward system is a support measure to increase the effect of accident prevention and induces safe driving with financial reward when safe driving is performed. In other words, in an area where accidents due to speeding are high, direct reward is provided to motivate safe driving to prevent traffic accidents when safe driving instructions such as speed compliance, maintaining distance between vehicles, and driving in designated lanes are performed. Since these safe operation data and reward histories must be managed transparently and safely, the reward evidences and histories were constructed using the closed blockchain Hyperledger Fabric. However, while transparency and safety are guaranteed in the blockchain system, low data processing speed is a problem. In this study, the sequential block generation speed was as low as 10 TPS(transaction per second), and as a result of applying the acceleration function a high-performance network of 1,000 TPS or more was implemented.

  • Carbon dots (CDs) are few nanometer-sized carbon-based nanoparticles and emerging candidate materials in various fields such as biosensors and bioimaging due to their excellent optical properties and high biocompatibility. However, most CDs, emitting blue light, have limited their application in biomedical fields due to the low penetration of short-wavelength lights into the biological system. Therefore, there has been enormous need to develop long-wavelength emitting CDs. In this study, red-emitting CDs were successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal reaction of p-phenylenediamine with hydrochloric acid. In addition, the effect of the amount of hydrochloric acid on the formation of carbon dots, resulting in the variation of the chemical structures of CDs, were investigated, which was confirmed with the intensive structural analyses using infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the chemical structure of CDs governed their optical properties and quantum yield. Therefore, this study provides an insight into the role of acid in forming red-emitting CDs as the optimal probe for biomedical application.

  • The garlic chive (Allium tuberosum Rotter) is a prominent herb species in Asia and other nations of the world. Garlic chives is a favorite vegetable and used to garnish noodles in Korea. The effects of various doses of N, P, and K fertilizers and drought stress on the chlorophyll content in the leaves of garlic chives were investigated. The evaluations showed that chlorophyll a content was 0.386 at 10 mg/l N fertilizer and 0.584 at 50 mg/l N fertilizer. The treatment group showed a significant difference with regard to the contents of chlorophylls a and b and total chlorophyll at the 5% level (p<0.05). Pearson's correlation coefficient (Pearson's r) for chlorophylls a and b and total chlorophyll were 0.940, 0.966, and 0.971, respectively. The highest content of chlorophylls a and b and total chlorophyll in the leaves was recorded at 40 mg/l P fertilizer, while the values corresponding to 50 mg/l P fertilizer were lower than those for 40 mg/l P fertilizer. The content of total chlorophyll evaluated at 10 mg/l K fertilizer was 0.312 and that at 50 mg/l was 0.589. The simple linear regression showed the relationship between chlorophyll efficiency aand moisture. The slope factors of the dark-level fluorescence yield (Fo), the maximum fluorescence yield (Fm), the quenched state (Fv), and the maximal PSII quantum yield (Fv/Fm) for chlorophyll-efficient indicators were -0.931, 0.972, 972, and 0.950, respectively. NPK fertilizers and drought stress affected the chlorophyll content and efficiency of A. tuberosum.

  • Lattice-based cryptography is the most practical post-quantum cryptography because it enjoys strong worst-case security, relatively efficient implementation, and simplicity. Ring learning with errors (R-LWE) is a public key encryption (PKE) method of lattice-based encryption (LBC), and the most important operation of R-LWE is the modular polynomial multiplication of rings. This paper proposes a method for optimizing modular multipliers based on approximate computing (AC) technology, targeting the medium-security parameter set of the R-LWE cryptosystem. First, as a simple way to implement complex logic, LUT is used to omit some of the approximate multiplication operations, and the 2's complement method is used to calculate the number of bits whose value is 1 when converting the value of the input data to binary. We propose a total of two methods to reduce the number of required adders by minimizing them. The proposed LUT-based modular multiplier reduced both speed and area by 9% compared to the existing R-LWE modular multiplier, and the modular multiplier using the 2's complement method reduced the area by 40% and improved the speed by 2%. appear. Finally, the area of the optimized modular multiplier with both of these methods applied was reduced by up to 43% compared to the previous one, and the speed was reduced by up to 10%.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic characteristics, and growth characteristics of Aster koraiensis and Dendranthema zawadskii var. latiloba according to shading treatment. A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii grew in four different shading treatment plots (0%, 50%, 75% and 95% of full sunlight) for experiments. It was found that as the shading level increased, the total chlorophyll content increased and dark respiration decreased in both A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii, indicating that A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii increase the utilization efficiency for photosynthesis under low light conditions. In addition, as the shading level increased, the net apparent quantum yield increased, resulting in the highest in the 95% shading plot, but the highest photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, and leaf mass per area (LMA) were shown in the control group than in the shading treatments. The results showed that A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii are heliophytes showing plasticity to light, and if the light is restricted to continue to shade, it may be detrimental to growth. For healthy growth, it is considered suitable to grow A. koraiensis under full light conditions, and D. zawadskii under the light condition that blocks 0-50% of full sunlight.

  • The amount of hydrogen adsorbed in arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was studied as a function of nanotube diameter and distance between the nearest-neighbor nanotubes on square arrangements using a grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. The influence of the geometry of a triangle array with the same diameters and distances was also studied. Hydrogen-carbon and hydrogen-hydrogen interactions were modeled with Lennard-Jones potentials for short range interactions and electrostatic interactions were added for hydrogen-hydrogen pairs to consider quantum contributions at low temperatures. At 194.5 K, Type I isotherms for large-diameter SWNTs and Type IV isotherms without hysteresis between adsorption and desorption processes for wider tube separations were observed. At 200 bars, the gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity of the SWNTs was reached or exceeded the US Department of Energy (DOE) target, but the volumetric capacity was about 70% of the DOE target. At 77 K, a two-step adsorption was observed, corresponding to a monolayer formation step followed by a condensation step. Hydrogen was adsorbed first to the inner surface of the nanotubes, then to the outer surface, intratubular space and the interstitial channels between the nanotube bundles. The simulation indicated that SWNTs of various diameters and distances in a wide range of configurations exceeded the DOE gravimetric and volumetric targets at under 1 bar.
