  • In this paper, we propose a satellite multispectral image data compression method using classified vector quantization. This method classifies each pixel vector considering band characteristics of multispectral images. For each class, we perform both intraband and interband vector quantization to romove spatial and spectral redundancy, respectively. And residual vector quantization for error images is performed to reduce error of interband vector quantization. Thus, this method improves compression efficiency because of removing both intraband(spatial) and interband (spectral) redundancy in multispectral images, effectively. Experiments on landsat TM multispectral image show that compression efficiency of proposed method is better than that of conventional method.

  • The impact of surface quantization on device parameters of a Si metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitor has been analyzed in the present work. Variation of conduction band bending, position of discrete energy states, variation of surface potential, and the variation of inversion carrier concentration at charge centroid have been analyzed for different gate voltages, substrate doping concentrations and oxide thicknesses. Oxide thickness calculated from the experimental C-V data of a MOS capacitor is different from the actual oxide thickness, since such data include the effect of surface quantization. A correction factor has been developed considering the effect of charge centroid in presence of surface quantization at strong inversion and it has been observed that the correction due to surface quantization is crucial for highly doped substrate with thinner gate oxide.

  • In this paper, a convex optimization technique, which is based on the generalized quantization constraint (GQC), is proposed in the compressive sensing reconstruction using quantized measures. The set size of the proposed GQC can be controlled, and through extensive numerical simulations based on the uniform scalar quantizers, the CS reconstruction errors are improved by 3.4-3.6dB compared to the traditional QC method for the CS problems of m/klogn > 2.

  • In multi-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging, data is obtained in the spatial frequency domain. Since the signal variation in the spatial frequency domain is much larger than that in the spatial domain, analog-to-digital converts with wide conversion bits are required. In this paper, the quantization noise in magnetic resonance imaging is analyzed. The signal-to-quantization noise ratio(SQNR) in the reconstructed image is derived from the level of quantization in the data acquisition. Since the quantization noise is proportional to the signal amplitude, it becomes more dominant in high field imaging. Using the derived formula the SQNR for several MRI systems are evaluated, and it is shown that the quantization noise can be a limiting factor in high field imaging, especially in three dimensional imaging in magnetic resonance imaging.

  • This paper reviews existing message-filtering schemes and presents a quantization-based message-filtering approach which reduces state update transmission and message traffic requirement. For a realization of the approach we develop a DEVS-based integrator which provides behavior and characteristic of the quantization-based approach. We take a spaceship and space traveling system as a case study to evaluate performance of the quantization-based approach. The approach is validated by DEVSJAVA simulations of the case study. The comparison of message traffic requirement between DTSS (Discrete Time System Specification)-based and DEVS-based systems apparently shows system performance improvement through the quantization-based approach.

  • The existing reversible data hiding methods for block truncation coding (BTC) compressed images often utilize difference expansion or histogram shifting technique for data embedment. Although these methods effectively embed data into the compressed codes, the embedding operations may swap the numerical order of the higher and lower quantization levels. Since the numerical order of these two quantization levels can be exploited to carry additional data without destroying the quality of decoded image, the existing methods cannot take the advantages of this property to embed data more efficiently. In this paper, we embed data by shifting the higher and lower quantization levels in opposite direction. Because the embedment does not change numerical order of quantization levels, we exploit this property to carry additional data without further reducing the image quality. The proposed method performs no-distortion embedding if the payload is small, and performs reversible data embedding for large payload. The experimental results show that the proposed method offers better embedding performance over prior works in terms of payload and image quality.

  • This paper presents the effects of depth map quantization for multiview intermediate image generation using depth image-based rendering (DIBR). DIBR synthesizes multiple virtual views of a 3D scene from a 2D image and its associated depth map. However, it needs precise depth information in order to generate reliable and accurate intermediate view images for use in multiview 3D display systems. Previous work has extensively studied the pre-processing of the depth map, but little is known about depth map quantization. In this paper, we conduct an experiment to estimate the depth map quantization that affords acceptable image quality to generate DIBR-based multiview intermediate images. The experiment uses computer-generated 3D scenes, in which the multiview images captured directly from the scene are compared to the multiview intermediate images constructed by DIBR with a number of quantized depth maps. The results showed that there was no significant effect on depth map quantization from 16-bit to 7-bit (and more specifically 96-scale) on DIBR. Hence, a depth map above 7-bit is needed to maintain sufficient image quality for a DIBR-based multiview 3D system.

  • In this paper, a novel quantization method for wideband signal codec with 7 kHz bandwidth is proposed. In the transform-based wideband signal codecs, the signal is transformed to frequency domain and the spectral coefficients in each frequency band are quantized based on human perceptual model, followed by Huffman coding. However, the property of each band varies with frequency, and the codec has poor performance when all bands are quantized with the same method. Therefore, a selective quantization method is proposed, which analyzes the band property and selects the quantization domain between frequency domain and time domain based on the quantization efficiency. It is confirmed that the proposed method has better performance than the quantizer of G722.1 codec.

  • In this paper, we propose improved binary tree vector quantization with consideration of spatial sensitivity which is one of the human visual properties. We combine weights in consideration with the responsibility of human visual system according to changes of three primary color in blocks of images with the process of splitting nodes using eigenvector in binary tree vector quantization. Also we propose the novel quality measure of the quantization images that applies MTF(modulation transfer function) to luminance value of quantization error of color image. The test results show that the proposed method generates the quantized images with fine color and performs better than the conventional method in terms of clustering the similar regions. Also the proposed method can get less quantized level images and can reduce the resource occupied by the quantized image.
