India has maximum genetic materials in early cauliflower, which grow in subtropical conditions. Different disease parameters like linear growth, maximum growth rate per day, AUDPC, apparent infection rate and percent diseased area were calculated in artificially inoculated plants. Apparent infection rate is not co-related with the black rot disease incidence and should never be considered during characterization of disease resistance and varietal screening. Based on the above disease parameters Kunwari-18, Phool Gobhi Kunwari, Kataki-7 and BT-10-2 were selected as moderately resistance to black rot in early cauliflower. These lines can be used for black rot prone area and also for black rot disease improvement programme. Considering the qualitative and quantitative parameters, slow rotting resistance cauliflower lines are selected as such for cultivation and would be best suited in integrated disease programme.
BACKGROUND: Antibiotics used in animal husbandry for disease prevention and treatment have resulted in the rapid progression of antibiotic resistant bacteria which can be introduced into the environment through livestock feces/manure, disseminating antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs). In this study, fecal samples were collected from the livestock farms located in Jeju Island to investigate the relationship between microbial communities and ARGs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Illumina MiSeq sequencing was applied to characterize microbial communities within each fecal sample. Using quantitative PCR (qPCR), ten ARGs encoding tetracycline resistance (tetB, tetM), sulfonamide resistance (sul1, sul2), fluoroquinolone resistance (qnrD, qnrS), fluoroquinolone and aminoglycoside resistance (aac(6')-Ib), beta-lactam resistance (blaTEM, blaCTX-M), macrolide resistance (ermC), a class 1 integronsintegrase gene (intI1), and a class 2 integrons-integrase gene (intI2) were quantified. The results showed that Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were dominant in human, cow, horse, and pig groups, while Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were dominant in chicken group. Among ARGs, tetM was detected with the highest number of copies, followed by sul1 and sul2. Most of the genera belonging to Firmicutes showed positive correlations with ARGs and integron genes. There were 97, 34, 31, 25, and 22 genera in chicken, cow, pig, human, and horse respectively which showed positive correlations with ARGs and integron genes. In network analysis, we identified diversity of microbial communities which correlated with ARGs and integron genes. CONCLUSION(S): In this study, antibiotic resistance patterns in human and livestock fecal samples were identified. The abundance of ARGs and integron genes detected in the samples were associated with the amount of antibiotics commonly used for human and livestocks. We found diverse microbial communities associated with antibiotics resistance genes in different hosts, suggesting that antibiotics resistance can disseminate across environments through various routes. Identifying the routes of ARG dissemination in the environment would be the first step to overcome the challenge of antibiotic resistance in the future.
This paper deals with the optimal use of the ELB (Electric Leakage circuit Breaks) for the protection of low voltage distribution system. Since the ELB is recently used together for grounding fault while only the ground resistance was used in the past, the analysis of ELB characteristics is indispensible. By the quantitative analysis and the setting of limit the ground resistance and the ELB is derived and then the optimal use of the ELB is expected to contribute to the system protection.
Microstructural development of ferritic 11Cr-3.45W heat-resistance steel for ultra-supercritical power plant during creep and thermal aging was investigated using electron microscopy. The test samples were isothermally aged at $700^{\circ}C$ for up to 4000 hours and subjected to creep loading at $700^{\circ}C$ for predetermined periods of lifetime to prepare the damaged materials. In this structural material, a various secondary phases are the primary influence on mechanical properties of ferritic heat-resistance steel. The typical precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$, MX and $M_2X$ secondary phases had been analyzed through qualitative and quantitative manner. Coarsening of precipitates and increase of lath width were observed during creep and thermal aging. This phenomenon was remarkable for creep process compared with isothermal aging process.
Resistance factors for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the framework of reliability theory. A comprehensive foundation design case study on an actual bridge was performed using resistance factors developed in this study. Comparing with Allowable Stress Design (ASD), LRFD design method provides quantitative evaluation of safety level of designed foundation and exhibits considerable potential economy in design.
The resistance spot welding process has been extensively used for joining of sheet metals, which are subject to variation of many process variables. Many qualitive analyses of sampled process variables have been attempted to predict nugget size. In this paper, dynamic resistance and electrode movement signal which is a good indicative of the nugget size was examined by introducing an artificial neural network estimator. An artificial neural feedforward network with back-propagation of error was applied for the estimation of the nugget size. The prediction by the neural network is in good agreement with the actual nugget size for resistance spot welding of galvanized steel. The results are quite promising in that the quantitative estimation of the invisible nugget size can be achieved without conventional destructive testing of welds.
In increasing the safety and usage of lithium-ion battery packs, reducing the parameter deviation between cells, such as voltage and temperature within the battery pack, is important. In this study, we propose a screening method to reduce parameter deviation between cells in battery packs. Screening algorithms are constructed based on Fuzzy logic and quantitatively express the similarities between battery cells. Screening is applied by utilizing series resistance components after experiments of electrical characteristics that consider the operation status of battery packs. After screening, the standard deviation of series resistance components according to the similarity ranking is compared and analyzed, and their conformity are verified with the algorithm parameters.
Graphene, a sigle atomic layered structure of graphite, has drawn many scientific interests for attractive future electronics and optoelectronics beyond silicon-based technology because of its robust physical, optical, and electrical properties. But high metal-graphene contact resistance prevents the successful integration of high speed graphene devices and circuits, although pristine graphene is known to have a novel carrier transport property. Meanwhile, in the recently reported metal-graphene contact studies, there are many attempts to reduce the metal-graphene contact resistance, such as doping and one-dimensional edge contact. However, there is a lack of quantitative analysis of the edge contact scheme through variously designed patterns with different metal contact. We first investigate the effets of edge contact (metal-graphene interface) on the contact resistance in terms of edge pattern design through patterning (photolithography + plasma etching) and electral measurements. Where the contact resistance is determined using the transfer length method (TLM). Finally, we research the role of metal-kind (Palladium, Copper, and Tianium) on the contact resistance through the edge-contacted devices, eventually minimizing contact resistance down to approximately $23{\Omega}{\cdot}{\mu}m$ at room temperature (approximately $19{\Omega}{\cdot}{\mu}m$ at 100 K).
The identification of antimicrobial use patterns is essential for determining key targets for antimicrobial stewardship interventions and evaluating the effectiveness thereof. Accurately identifying antimicrobial use patterns requires quantitative evaluation, which focuses on measuring the quantity and frequency of antimicrobial use, and qualitative evaluation, which assesses the appropriateness, effectiveness, and potential side effects of antimicrobial prescriptions. This paper summarizes the quantitative and qualitative methods used to evaluate antimicrobials, drawing insights from overseas and domestic cases.
The pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh produces a diverse range of antibiotics for human and animal use, however, waste disposal management is inadequate. This results in substantial quantities of antibiotics being discharged into water bodies, which provide suitable environment for the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, capable of spreading resistance genes. This study intended for exploring the bacterial antibiotic resistance profile in adjoining aquatic environmental sources of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh. Seven surface water samples were collected from the vicinity of two pharmaceutical industries located in the Savar area and 51 Escherichia coli isolates were identified using both phenotypic and genotypic methods. Antibiotic susceptibility tests revealed the highest percentage of resistance against ampicillin, azithromycin, and nalidixic acid (100%) and the lowest resistance against meropenem (1.96%) out of sixteen different antibiotics tested. 100% of the study E. coli isolates were observed with Multidrug resistance phenotypes, with the Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) value ranging from 0.6-1.0. Furthermore, 69% of the isolates were Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBL) positive as per the Double Disk Diffusion Synergy Test (DDST). ESBL resistance genes blaTEM, blaCTX-M-13, blaCTX-M-15, and blaSHV were detected in 70.6% (n = 36), 60.8% (n = 32), 54.9% (n = 28), and 1.96% (n = 1) of the isolates, respectively, by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Additionally, 15.68% (n = 8) of the isolates were positive for E. coli specific virulence genes in PCR. These findings suggest that pharmaceutical wastewater, if not properly treated, could be a formidable source of antibiotic resistance spread in the surrounding aquatic environment. Therefore, continued surveillance for drug resistance among bacterial populations around drug manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh is necessary, along with proper waste disposal management.
