Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with oral health-related quality of life among elderly women living in the community. Method: The participants were 162 elderly women aged 65 and older who lived in D city. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression were used with SPSS/PC windows program to analyze the data. Results: The major findings of this study are as follows: 1) there were statistical differences in OHQoL for spouse presence, educational level, monthly income, self-rated health, number of teeth and chronic disease, and types of denture. 2) OHQoL was positively related to age, number of chronic disease and nutrition. Also, OHQoL was negatively related to educational level, monthly income, number of teeth, and diet habit. 3) Significant factors influencing OHQoL were self-rated health and nutritional status. Conclusion: Based on these results, it is necessary to do further study on oral health of those who have 20 or more teeth. Oral health promotion programs focusing on prevention are necessary for elderly women in the high risk group.
Objectives: This study conducted a literature review to systematically confirm the quantitative results of individual studies on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among elderly adults. Methods: Studies on quality of life related to oral health among Korean elderly adults were selected as targets, and literature published in Korean journals until January 10, 2019, was examined. A total of 179 papers were reviewed using RISS, KISS, eArticle, and DBpia, and 17 papers meeting the final conditions were selected for analysis. Factors were categorized with publication year, sample size, gender, and statistical analysis as main variables. Relevant factors and effect sizes were then encoded, and the values of correlation coefficients and correlation effect sizes were coded. Results: After classifying the factors affecting OHRQoL among elderly adults according to common characteristics, four studies related to food and diet, five studies related to xerostomia, and four studies related to dentures and denture satisfaction were found to be related. Conclusions: Overall, various factors affected OHRQoL among elderly adults. Therefore, oral health among elderly adults must be developed and managed considering the various factors related to OHRQoL.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between masticatory ability and oral health-related quality of life using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) of the elderly. Total 195 elderly subjects were assessed for subjective masticatory ability, objective masticatory ability and OHIP-14 concerned with quality of life. When masticatory ability is low, the odds ratio(OR) of the quality of life is worse was increased. After adjusted age, residence, education, denture, odds ratio of subjective masticatory ability was 2.42(p<0.05) increased and odds ratio of objective masticatory ability was 7.58(p<0.001) increased. This study showed significant association between masticatory ability and the total OHIP-14 score of the quality of life of the elderly. Masticatory ability can affect quality of life oral health-related in elderly. While following up on various studies were carried out as a long-term, I hope it will be of help in improving the quality of life of the elderly with maintaining a healthy oral health.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between prosthetic status and health related quality of elderly by using EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) which is a standardized instrument used as a measure of health outcome. Data from 1,179 elderly subjects (over 65 years old) from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used in our analysis. Oral examination were conducted to obtain wearing prosthetic and needed prosthetic. EQ-5D is a widely used health condition measuring instrument. It consists of the five dimensions: Mobility, Self-care, Usual activities, Pain/discomfort and Anxiety/depression. EQ-5D index is a score calculated out of a weighting system. In this study, the mean score of the EQ-5D index among the elderly was 0.86. For EQ-5D index gender, female showed statistically significantly lower quality of life than male. The related factors EQ-5D index, when the lower demand for fixed prosthodontics and full denture. Wearers in partial and complete denture than non-wearers showed higher EQ-5D index. In order to improve EQ-5D index among the elderly who demand prosthetic status, which has lost its function through providing proper dental prostheses.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the risk of dysphagia among older adults in senior centers and to find the relationships between the risk of dysphagia and dysphagia-specific quality of life. Methods: The participants were 260 community-dwelling older adults, aged 65 years in two senior centers. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires or face to face interviews. The instruments were the modified dysphagia risk assessment scale for elderly and dysphagia-specific quality of life questionnaire. The data were analyzed using t-test, $x^2$-test, logistic regression, and pearson's correlation. Results: 162 older adults (62.3%) were classified as having the risk of dysphagia. Severe dry mouth (OR=15.677, CI=2.986~82.297), neurologic disease (OR=10.125, CI=1.092~93.899), gastritis (OR=5.731, CI=1.482~22.173), denture discomfort (OR=2.969, CI=1.016~8.677), teeth discomfort (OR=2.61, CI=1.311~5.196) were the significant factors predicting the risk of dysphagia. There is a significant correlation between the risk of dysphagia and dysphagia-specific quality of life. Conclusion: Dysphagia could be a major health problem among community dwelling older adults. It can affect the dysphagia-specific quality of life. Older adults having severe dry mouth, neurologic disease, or gastritis should receive dysphagia risk assessment and proper management on a regular basis. An effective nursing intervention needs to be developed for the older adults with risk factors of dysphagia.
Purpose: The purpose of this prospective study was to compare the satisfaction levels of the patients worn implant supported mandibular overdentures and conventional complete dentures. Materials and methods: Full edentulous patients (n=40) who were planned to do implant supported mandibular overdentures, aged 51 to 82 years, were enrolled in this study. All subjects rated their satisfaction levels (mastication, pronunciation, esthetics, pain, and general satisfaction) of their original conventional dentures prior to treatment and their new overdentures 1 week and 12 weeks after the delivery on 10 cm visual analogue scales. Repeated-measures ANOVA was performed to compare the satisfaction level of each three period (P<.05). Results: The mean satisfaction levels of the implant supported overdentures after 1 week and 12 weeks of delivery were significantly higher than those of the conventional complete dentures in all scoring parameters (P<.05). After 12 weeks of overdenture delivery, the increase of the satisfaction levels in mastication, pronunciation, and pain and the decrease in esthetics and general satisfaction were observed in comparison with those after 1 week of delivery, however, no significant difference was found between the satisfaction levels of 1 week and 12 weeks after delivery. Conclusion: An implant supported overdenture might be one of the effective ways to give more satisfaction to patients who were not gratified with a conventional denture and eventually to improve their quality of life.
This paper aims to examine baes metal alloy in all its aspects - the roles of elements, the content of every element according to uses, characters, laboratory technique methods and the kind of artificial base metal alloy registered in A.D.A. Specification. The results are as follows; 1. Base metal alloy is used widely bacaues it is rather cheap, but it should be handled appropriately in operating because its quality is bad. 2. Classifying base metal alloy, it is classified into Co-Cr alloy, Ni-Cr alloy, and Ni-Cr-Co alloy according to element, it is classified into partial denture alloy, surgical alloy and crown & bridge alloy according to use. 3. Among elements of base metal alloy, Bellium lowers the melting point of the alloy and increases the strength, but the amount should be limited when it is used because it destroys the organization of a living body. 4. The investments for base metal alloy are ethyl silcate bonded investment and phosphate bonded investment which endure well at high burn out temperature. 5. A.D.A specification No.14 in Kore contains Niranium, Nobilium, regalloy, Ticonium and Vitallium.
PURPOSE. This study aimed to compare the bite force (BF) between complete dentures and implant overdentures (IODs) retained by two mandibular implants. Additionally, we evaluated the quality of life (QoL) and patient satisfaction among individuals using IODs. In addition, the effects of demographic parameters such as age and sex, and clinical parameters such as implant length, implant diameter, attachment height, attachment color, and interimplant distance on BF, QoL, and patient satisfaction were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 51 edentulous patients rehabilitated with the maxillary complete dentures and mandibular IODs retained by two implants were included in this study. BF was measured using a force meter pre- and post-implant in the same patients. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and patient satisfaction was assessed with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) questionnaires. RESULTS. It was found that BF values were statistically higher for IODs than complete dentures (P < .001). In terms of attachment height of the OHIP scores, there was a significant difference in the psychological disability and social disability domains (P < .05). When examining the change in patient satisfaction as a function of sex, it was found that mandibular retention satisfaction differed significantly by sex (P < .05), but there was no significant difference in the other domains. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it was observed that the BF increased after the use of IODs. Several factors, including age, interimplant distance, attachment height, and attachment color, were found to impact OHRQoL. Sex and implant diameter were identified as factors affecting patient satisfaction.
