  • IP QoS is not required to overcome the limitations of the existing Best Effort Service to connect to the explosion of the Internet traffic revenue. To IP QoS requirements of next-generation communication network, Metric Sizing Methodology is very important. However, IP networks have been developed with a focus gender flexibility and scalability than the QoS. Therefore, it is necessary to secure the quality measures for different existing IP technology to apply QoS in IP networks. When establishing the connection quality and transmission quality, based on the IP QoS(Quality of Service) objective data quality metrics can be obtained by analyzing the communication quality hindrance. Understanding the communication quality level may evaluate quality sensitive area and quality hindrance. Establish effective quality metrics can be expected to promote effective and customer satisfaction through improved quality, improved call quality for this issue.

  • Night-time image quality evaluation is an urgent requirement in visual inspection. The lighting environment of night-time results in low brightness, low contrast, loss of detailed information, and colour dissonance of image, which remains a daunting task of delicately evaluating the image quality at night. A new blind quality assessment metric is presented for realistic night-time scenario through a comprehensive consideration of contrast, texture, and colour in this article. To be specific, image blocks' color-gray-difference (CGD) histogram that represents contrast features is computed at first. Next, texture features that are measured by the mean subtracted contrast normalized (MSCN)-weighted local binary pattern (LBP) histogram are calculated. Then statistical features in Lαβ colour space are detected. Finally, the quality prediction model is conducted by the support vector regression (SVR) based on extracted contrast, texture, and colour features. Experiments conducted on NNID, CCRIQ, LIVE-CH, and CID2013 databases indicate that the proposed metric is superior to the compared BIQA metrics.

  • The object of this study was to evaluate lotic ecosystem health using multiple eco-metric approaches such as water chemistry diagnosis, physical habitat health evaluations, and biological integrity modeling at 100 streams of four major watersheds. For the study, eight chemical water quality parameters such as nutrients (N, P) and organic material were measured and 11-metric models of Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) and multiple eco-metric health assessment model (MEHA) were applied to the four major watershed. Nutrient analysis of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in all watersheds indicated a eutrophic state depending on the locations of sampling streams. Physical habitat health, based on the QHEI model, averaged 114 (range: 56 - 194), judging as a "good condition" by the criteria of Plafkin et al. (1989). In addition, primary (H1 - H4), secondary (H5 - H7), and tertiary habitat metric variables (H8 - H11) were analyzed in relation to the physical habitat degradations. The plots of tolerant species ($P_{TS}$) and sensitive species ($P_{SS}$) to water quality showed that the proportions of $P_{TS}$ had positive linear functions with nutrients, and that the $P_{SS}$ had inverse linear relations with the chemical variables. The model of eco-metric health assessment showed that mean MEHA was 20.4, indicating a fair condition. Overall, our data suggest that water chemistry, based on nutrients and organic matter, directly modified the trophic structures in relation to food chain in the aquatic ecosystems, and then these directly influenced the compositions of tolerance/sensitive species, resulting in degradations of overall ecological health.

  • Image distortions are typically characterized by degradations of structures. Dictionaries learned from natural images can capture the underlying structures in images, which are important for image quality assessment (IQA). This paper presents a general-purpose no-reference image quality metric using a GRadient-Induced Dictionary (GRID). A dictionary is first constructed based on gradients of natural images using K-means clustering. Then image features are extracted using the dictionary based on Euclidean-norm coding and max-pooling. A distortion classification model and several distortion-specific quality regression models are trained using the support vector machine (SVM) by combining image features with distortion types and subjective scores, respectively. To evaluate the quality of a test image, the distortion classification model is used to determine the probabilities that the image belongs to different kinds of distortions, while the regression models are used to predict the corresponding distortion-specific quality scores. Finally, an overall quality score is computed as the probability-weighted distortion-specific quality scores. The proposed metric can evaluate image quality accurately and efficiently using a small dictionary. The performance of the proposed method is verified on public image quality databases. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed metric can generate quality scores highly consistent with human perception, and it outperforms the state-of-the-arts.

  • As VoIP systems move to wireless environments with much higher average packet loss rates than wired networks, it becomes less possible for the network to assure a reasonable QoS. So, real-time quality monitoring for mobile VoIP applications is an important issue to be explored. In this paper, we explore perceptual quality dependency on two parameters: the burst loss rate and average burst length. Also, we propose a simple 'moving average' approach with $\alpha$ aiming to measure those parameters on real-time basis. In order to find how accurately the two parameters measured estimate the real perceptual quality, we compare actual measured PESQ scores with estimated value by matching the measured quality metric to the trained MOS table. Finally, we propose the quality-based accounting system, which can set obvious continuities between quality and billing.

  • Recently, the structural similarity (SSIM) index metric is proposed. In the present paper, a new framework, which is called visual SSIM (VSSIM), is proposed by incorporating crucial human factors into the SSIM. The human factors are foveation, luminance, frequency and motion information. The performance of VSSIM is evaluated by subjective quality test compliant with the Video Quality Expert Group (VQEG) multimedia group test plan. It shows that the visual SSIM is more correlated with the subjective quality result than the conventional SSIM.

  • In previous works, psychoacoustic parameters have been used for objective quantification. However, these parameters do not agree well with subjective assessment. Therefore, the correlation between psychoacoustic parameters and the subjective rating of door closing sounds of sampled cars is low, and it is not sufficient to use psychoacoustic parameters as an objective metric to quantify the sound quality of door closing sounds. In this paper, a new method is proposed to objectively quantify the sound quality based on physiological acoustics and statistical signal processing. The gammatone filter, as a pre-processing, is used in models of the auditory system and kurtosis, which is the fourth-order moment of temporal signal, and is used to extract information about sound quality quantification for door closing sounds. The new metric obtained through the proposed method is highly correlated with subjective rating, and it is successfully applied to the quantification of the sound quality of door closing sounds.

  • In wireless mesh networks multi-rate technology environment, a mesh node can dynamically modify the data transmission rate on a particular link, in response to link distance, or more accurately, the perceived SNR ratio between neighbor nodes. In such networks, existing route selection schemes use a link quality metric. Thus, these schemes may easily result in the network being overloaded. In this paper, a new route metric is proposed; it considers both per-hop service delay and link quality at mesh nodes. In addition, the Load-Aware AODV (LA-AODV) protocol using the proposed metric is presented. The performance evaluation is performed by simulation using the OPNET simulator. It is demonstrated that the LA-AODV protocol outperforms the existing routing protocols using other existing route metrics in multi-rate WMN environment.

  • In this paper, we propose a predictive resource metric region (RMR) based radio resource metric estimation (RRME) mechanism, which utilizes a resource metric mapping function (RMMF), both of which permit efficient inter-working between the physical layer and higher layers for envisaging multimedia service applications over a CDMA communication system platform. The RMR can provide the acceptable resource region where QoS and acceptable link quality can be guaranteed with an achievable resource margin to be utilized in terms of capacity margin, the degree of confidence (DCL) of user, second-order statistics of Eb/Io. With predicted capacity margin and variance, DCL can deliver decision parameters with which an adaptive QoS based admission control can perform well taking capacity and resource availability into account in a dynamic and predictive manner. Combined with advanced techniques such as adaptive modulation or rate control and power control, the proposed mechanism can adjust the conventional stringent link quality information efficiently, and deliver accurate information of the resource availability. Thus, these can guarantee the maximization of resource utilization of multimedia service applications.
