The Ethnic Look Featured on Vivienne Tam's Collection from 1996 to 2005 (비비안 탐의 디자인에 나타난 민속풍에 관한 연구 - 1990년에서 2005년의 컬렉션을 중심으로 -)

  • Vivienne Tam was born in mainland China and educated in Hong Kong and has worked mainly in New York. Within multi-cultural background, she has shown unique fashion designs where western styles and China esprit were harmonized.. This study analyzed the ethnic look featured on Vivienne Tam's design to identify how she has expressed her ethnic identity into fashion. Photos featuring ethnic appeal among her New York collection from 1996 S/S to 2005 F/W were analyzed in terms of shape/silhouette, color, fabric, motifs, detail and accessaries. She utilized frequently chinese motifs and patterns such as bamboo, panda, budha, flowers, letters, and masks. Secondly she modified the shapes of Chinese traditional costume like Quipao to render ethnic appeal. Color, fabric and detail like frog and embroidery also contributed to enhance China mood. Comparatively, she used western clothing items including shirts, blouses, skirts, pants, dresses, and coats and maintained the silhouette tight and fit so that most her designs look wearable and westernized.

Characteristics of National Races' Costumes in Chinese Contemporary Costumes (중국 현대 복식에 나타난 소수 민족 복식의 특징)

  • The purposes of this study was to analyze the characteristics of national races' costumes in Chinese contemporary costumes. For the purpose, this researcher concentrated on the relations between national races' costumes and Chinese contemporary costumes and discuss systematically depending on references such as fashion magazines, picture albums, and historical records. The results of study were as follows: First, the formation of fashion has been influenced by Man, Uighur, and Choson races. For example, Qipao, the tight style of Man race's fashion, Uighur race's bell style sleeve and cyclic skirt are applied to women's modern fashion. Second, weaving, printing, and embroidery technique of a minority race developed more than Han race, so applied still. Recently, Chinese contemporary costumes accepted the weaving technique of Miao and Uighur race through publicizing of a minority culture. Third, a national race's costumes are famous with splendid design and applied to modern fashion directly. They are commonly made to hair pin, necklace, earing, bracelet and so on. Recently, styles from a national race's costumes and old style are becoming popular to Chinese and it's easier to found such a fashion in market.

A Study on the Fashion Images according to the Role Types of the Chinese First Ladies

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze types of roles and fashion of the Chinese first ladies and provide basic data for fashion image-making of first ladies. As for the research methods, the concepts, role types, and fashion of the first ladies were considered by referring to the precedent studies and relevant literature. Then, the fashion images according to role types were analyzed by collecting the photos of Chinese first ladies from the period of the Republic of China until today. The results were as follows: First, when the roles of Chinese first ladies were categorized based on ceremonial, political, and policy roles, Zhuo Lin and Wang Yeping played a ceremonial role; Wang Guangmei, Liu Yongqing, and Peng Liyuan played a political role; and Soong Qingling, Soong Mayling, and Jiang Qing played a policy role while they were first ladies. While the first ladies of the Republic of China often wore classic Chinese styles like traditional qipao as well as western clothes which contained a western influence, the first ladies of the People's Republic of China wore more colorful clothes and more accessories in the later period, and also often wore clothes that combined traditional and western elements. Second, first ladies who played a ceremonial role showed mannish and classic images; those who played a political role showed elegant, classic, and diverse images according to T.P.O; and those who played a policy role showed feminine, modern, and mannish images. Fashion images of the first ladies varied according to the level of political involvement, the sociocultural background of China at that time, and their personality and preference.

  • 한 후란 중국의 전통 복장을 말하는 것이다. 한 장 (漢裝) 이라고도 하며 고대 복장이라고도 한다. 영어로는 silk robe라고도 한다. 한 후는 한 나라 이후 명나라까지 만주가 정복하기 전인 1644년까지 입혀졌던 중국의 전통복장이다. 최근 중국에서도 전통복장에 대한 새로운 모색이 일어나고 있다. 중국 전통복식으로 대표되는 치파오는 만주족의 한족 말살 정책의 일환으로 간소화시킨 복식이다. 따라서 중국 전통의복은 만주족에 의해 사양길을 가기 전 고대 한 조의 복식이 중국전통을 대표한다고 할 수 있다. 전통적인 한 후 스타일은 벨트를 매며 여밈이 있고 좁은 소매 혹은 넓은 소매가 특징이다. 한 족이 한 나라, 상 왕조, 송나라, 당나라때 입었던 한 후가 중국의 복식을 대표하는 복식이며 주나라의 쉔의는 튜닉과 스타일의 결합으로서 아직도 상류그룹이 입고 있다. 당나라에서는 동방의 문화와 혼합되어 화려하거나 사치스럽게 수정되었고 만주가 침범하여 한 후는 더 이상 전통복으로 입히지 못하였다. 한 후의 현대적 의미를 볼 때 역사적으로는 베트남에서 기모노에 이르기까지 그 원형을 볼 수 있고 한 후를 통해 중국전통 복식의 원류를 찾을 수 있다. 연구방법으로 문헌과 시각자료를 활용하였다. 한 후의 현대적 의미는 전통의 새로운 자각과 세계화 현대화의 노력이라 할 수 있다. 치파오로 규정된 중국복식에 반해 전통 한 후에 대한 올바른 인식과 활용은 세계화와 오리엔탈이미지에 녹아 있는 한 후 디자인 디테일을 통해 현대적 모색을 활용하고 있다. 충분한 시각 자료가 부족하지만 현대적 노력이 앞으로의 중국이미지의 재고를 가져올 것이다.

Fashion Image and Design Characteristics of Chinese First Lady, Peng Liyuan (중국 퍼스트레이디 펑리위안의 패션이미지와 디자인 특성)

  • This study would inquire into the fashion image and design characteristics of Peng Liyuan, the first lady of China that has a mighty influence on the recent global economy and consumption. For this purpose, first, this study investigated the fashion image of Peng Liyuan according to the role which she performs as a first lady and analyzed how the fashion image appears and changes by year and role type. Second, this study analyzed the design characteristics of Peng Liyuan's fashion image, focusing on the silhouette, fashion items, coordinated items, colors, and textile patterns. The scope of the research was limited to the dresses worn by Peng Liyuan from March 14, 2013 to September 30, 2015. The fashion image of Peng Liyuan changed from classic and elegant image to modern image till 2015, and she reduced ethnic image and emphasized romantic image. In international diplomatic visits, she tried to express the confidence and potential of China through classic, ethnic and modern image, while in formal events of China, she showed an intention to communicate with the Chinese public with soft intimacy through elegant and ethnic images. As design characteristics in her fashion image, she flexibly changed her fashion image by the composition of silhouettes and items, which could cover her mid-life body type and made use of the form and detail of Chinese traditional qipao, appropriate coordination of scarves and brooches, the combination of chromatic color and achromatic color, appropriate uses of textile patterns and the delivery of China's image according to place and purpose. The study of Peng Liyuan's fashion image has significance to understand the fashion trend as a role model of fashion for the Chinese people and can help the domestic fashion industry that aims at the Chinese market in the future by predicting Chinese women' Fashion trend.

An Analysis of 2005 Summer Women's Street Fashion in Dalian, China (2005년(年) 여름 중국 대련시 여성(中國 大連市 女性) 스트리트 패션 분석(分析))

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the street style of women in Dalian, China. 1.185 females of Dalian central street have participated for the survey of this study. This study analyzes characterization of the street style and, classifies it's characteristics by age groups, clothing styles, and clothing items. There are three outcomes due to the aim of this study, 1. In age group classification, every age groups preferred casual style. Especially, young/young adults preferred mix-match styles with various designs. Distinctly, some of missy group preferred fashion trend and others preferred mature style. Also, the preference of missies/madame's group is obviously divided into two groups which pursues fashion trend and not. 2. In clothing style classification, casual styles such as mini-skirts, hot pants, tight t-shirts are mostly in tight silhouette. Also, the main colors are indigo-blue, white, black and point color, which are vivid tone and fluorescent colors. The characteristics of sport casual style contribute the upper garment and the lower garment, which forms a set. Classic styles are divided into two groups of typical formal dress and traditional Qipao dress. The colors of feminine style and textile printing are more sumptuous than other styles. 3. In clothing items classification, the points of the upper garments is the construction of designs, textile printing, ornament with beads, embroidery, and ribbon etc., exposed back. The lower garments like hot pants and mini-skirts are made of jeans. The cargo pants that is made of jean, cotton, luster textile. Also, one-piece dress has the characteristics of tiered and irregular hem line.
