This paper proposes an innovative method for selection of measurement sets in static parameter identification of concrete or steel bridges. This method is proved as a systematic tool to address the first steps of Structural System Identification procedures by observability techniques: the selection of adequate measurement sets. The observability trees show graphically how the unknown estimates are successively calculated throughout the recursive process of the observability analysis. The observability trees can be proved as an intuitive and powerful tool for measurement selection in beam bridges that can also be applied in complex structures, such as cable-stayed bridges. Nevertheless, in these structures, the strong link among structural parameters advises to assume a set of simplifications to increase the tree intuitiveness. In addition, a set of guidelines are provided to facilitate the representation of the observability trees in this kind of structures. These guidelines are applied in bridges of growing complexity to explain how the characteristics of the geometry of the structure (e.g. deck inclination, type of pylon-deck connection, or the existence of stay cables) affect the observability trees. The importance of the observability trees is justified by a statistical analysis of measurement sets randomly selected. This study shows that, in the analyzed structure, the probability of selecting an adequate measurement set with a minimum number of measurements at random is practically negligible. Furthermore, even bigger measurement sets might not provide adequate SSI of the unknown parameters. Finally, to show the potential of the observability trees, a large-scale concrete cable-stayed bridge is also analyzed. The comparison with the number of measurements required in the literature shows again the advantages of using the proposed method.
The suppression of aerodynamic response of long-span suspension bridges during erection and after completion by using single TMD and multi TMD is presented in this paper. An advanced finite-element-based aerodynamic model that can be used to analyze both flutter instability and buffeting response in the time domain is also proposed. The frequency-dependent flutter derivatives are transferred into a time-dependent rational function, through which the coupling effects of three-dimensional aerodynamic motions under gusty winds can be accurately considered. The modal damping of a structure-TMD system is analyzed by the state-space approach. The numerical examples are performed on the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge with a main span of 1990 m. The bridge is idealized by a three-dimensional finite-element model consisting of 681 nodes. The results show that when the wind velocity is low, about 20 m/s, the multi TMD type 1 (the vertical and horizontal TMD with 1% mass ratio in each direction together with the torsional TMD with ratio of 1% mass moment of inertia) can significantly reduce the buffeting response in vertical, horizontal and torsional directions by 8.6-13%. When the wind velocity increases to 40 m/s, the control efficiency of a multi TMD in reducing the torsional buffeting response increases greatly to 28%. However, its control efficiency in the vertical and horizontal directions reduces. The results also indicate that the critical wind velocity for flutter instability during erection is significantly lower than that of the completed bridge. By pylon-to-midspan configuration, the minimum critical wind velocity of 57.70 m/s occurs at stage of 85% deck completion.

With the nation showing increasing concern for earthquakes, there have been several methods for the analysis of earthquakes and evaluation of damage. Nevertheless, there is no clear standard to assess the seismic damage to structures quantitatively. Accordingly, this study conducted seismic analysis of several forms of seismic waves and actual seismic load, targeting the cable stayed bridge, which is supported by a cable and proposes a method for evaluating the damage based on the results. The damage index was calculated based on the tilting of the pylon of the cable-stayed bridge and the characteristics of physical seismic damage was suggested with 4 levels, such as A, B, C, and D. In addition, it is not proper to simply judge that the seismic damage index is obtained as large or small at all times depending on the seismic analysis method. Although this study focused on the proposal seismic damage index and an evaluation of the damage targeting the cable stayed bridge, the result was applied to a structure with a similar maximum displacement response.

The recognition of the natural background radiation is important not only for radiological education but also for the promotion of people's scientific view about radiation. We made a "room" on the web showing natural background radiation as part of a VRM (Virtual Radiation Museum). The "room" shows the video images of the tracks of charged particles from natural background radiation, alpha and beta ray track from known sources using a Large Scale Diffusion Cloud Chamber. The purpose of this study is to make clear the origin of a kind of track (named A-track) which is thick and easy to recognize with the length less than several cm in the cloud chamber, and to make numerical explanation of its counting rate. The study was carried out using a Large Scale Diffusion Cloud Chamber (Phywe, Germany) installed in the Niigata Science Museum. The Model RNC (Pylon Electronics, Canada) was used as Rn-222 source. Ra-226 activity in RNC was 111.6 Bq calibrated with NIST protocol. Rn-222 gas was injected into the cloud chamber. Continuous video recording with use of Digital Handycam (SONY, Japan) was carried out for 360 min. after injection of Rn-222 gas. The number of alpha-ray track (alpha track) in the video images was analyzed. The growth and decay curve of the total activity of Rn-222 and its alpha emitting progeny were calculated and compared with the count of the alpha tracks. As a result the alpha tracks formed by Rn-222 injection resemble A-Tracks. The relationship between A-track in the cloud chamber and atmospheric Rn is discussed.

Cable-stayed bridge is a bridge that consists of one or more pylons, with cables supporting the deck. Cable-stayed bridges have come into wide use recently because of their economy, stability, and excellent appearance. It is possible to achieve a uniform moment distribution in the stiffening girders mainly by prestressing the cables, which leads to a more economical design in material and weight than other types of bridges. However, to achieve a more uniform moment distribution is vague objective, so it cannot be easily defined as the optimization problem. In other words, the minimization of cost or weight as the objective is not directly related to the optimization of cable prestressing. Therefore, it has been considered as one of the most important, difficult and also interesting topics among many researchers and bridge engineers to determine the optimal tensioning strategy how to apply prestressing forces of the cables of cable-stayed bridge. A number of approaches (Wang et al. 1993, $Negr\~{a}o\;and\;Sim\~{o}es$ 1997, Agrawal 1997, Janjic et al. 2003) to determine the optimal cable tensions have been proposed in the literature. Among these approaches the unit load method (Janjic et al. 2003) is considered in this paper because it can take into account the actual construction process while other approaches are based on the configuration of the final structure only. In this paper, '2-step approach' based on the unit load method is proposed to find the optimal tensioning strategy especially for the atypical asymmetric bridge under construction, which has continuous deck supported by one pylon and stay cables. Some numerical results will be given to show the validity of the new approach suggested in this paper.

According to the development of loading equipments, it is usual to change or replace the existing stores. It has been known that pylon-mounted under stores strongly affect aircraft dynamics characteristics due to the change of aerodynamics. To predict the aerodynamics and aero-elasticity is essentially requested with considering the configuration and shape of external stores during the development of aircraft and/or external stores. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics and computational structure dynamics interaction methodology are applied for prediction of aerodynamic characteristics for F-5 aircraft's horizontal tail with various shape of external stores. FLUENT and ABAQUS were used to calculate fluid and structural dynamics. Code-bridge was made base on the globally supported radial basis function to execute interpolation and mapping. As a result, even though the aeroelasticity of the horizontal tail slightly changes according to the shape of external store, the flutter was not occurred at the considered flight conditions in this study.
Purpose: Aerial spraying with an agricultural unmanned helicopter became a new paradigm in the agricultural practice. Laterally tilting behavior of a conventional agricultural helicopter, resulting in the biased down-wash and uneven spray deposit is a physically intrinsic phenomenon while hovering and cruise flights. Authors studied and developed a roll-balanced agricultural helicopter with a raised pylon tail rotor system. In this study, the attitude of the roll-balanced helicopter was determined using the Kalman filter algorithm, and the quality of roll balancing of a bare-airframe helicopter was evaluated. Methods: Instantaneous attitudes were estimated using the advantage of gyroscope, followed by the long term correction and prediction using accelerometer data for the advantage of convergence. The attitudes of the fuselage were calculated by applying the Kalman filter algorithm. The spraying maneuver of the helicopter was performed at a field of 50 m long, and the attitude data were acquired and evaluated. Results: The determination of attitude using the inertial measurement unit(IMU) and Kalman filter was reliable and practical. The intrinsic attitude of the developed helicopter was stable and roll-balanced. The deviation of roll angle was ${\pm}6.3^{\circ}$ with an average of $0^{\circ}$, referring to roll-balanced. Conclusions: Handling quality of the roll attitude determined to be steadily balanced. The balancing behavior of the developed helicopter would result in an even spray pattern during aerial application.

Many electric power cables span the sea in Korean archipelago. Lots of shipping routes were established between the islands in the same area and ships frequently sail under the cable which cross the seas. Sometimes electric power cables were accidently broken by sailing ships and catastrophic damage of island industry followed thereby. If navigators have detailed knowledge about the height of electric power cable, the ship's sailing condition will be greatly improved. But at the present time, navigators have limited data about the electric power cable. Those are the horizontal distance between pylons, the height of pylons and minimum height of electric power cable. This study introduced the calculating methodology to find out the height of cable at any position between pylons. The ship's tracks were recorded and traffic safety was assessed by statistical method in relation to cable height.

Initial shape analysis for cable-stayed bridges should be able to find optimizated initial cable forces and unstrained length that minimize deflection and bending moments of the deck and pylon. Comparison study of an improved initial force method and TCUD method for determination of initial cable forces in cable-stayed bridges is presented in this paper. For this purpose, an elastic catenary cable element and a nonlinear frame element are firstly described. And concepts and algorithm of two analysis methods are then presented. Finally to demonstrate the validity and the accuracy of two methods, numerical examples for initial state problems of cable-stayed bridges are given and compared based on these methods.

Recently, the concrete-steel hybrid extradosed bridge has been proposed as alternative bridge type at long span site. The hybrid extradosed bridge adopts light orthogonal deck girder instead of heavy concrete deck girder at the center span of bridge, and it enables to construct long-span bridge. And also, for this bridge type the decrease of self-weight of girder enables to reduce girder depth and side span length of extradosed bridge, so its type has more efficient structural behavior and makes it possible to perform optimal bridge design. Therefore, it is very important to set up the procedure and parameters of optimal design for concrete-steel hybrid extradosed bridge. In this study, the effects of design parameters (the variation of pylon height, bridge deck depth and orthogonal deck girder length) are discussed. And numerical analysis and sensitivity analysis are carried out according to these parameters. And design weight values about these parameters are quantitatively suggested to reflect characteristics of concrete-steel hybrid bridge.
