Polyamic acid(PAA)/organoclay nanocomposites containing phosphorous were prepared by solution blending of phosphorylated PAA(PPAA) and organically modified montmorillonite(O-MMT) as a type of layered clays. The nanocomposites were characterized by FT-IR, DSC, TGA, PCFC, SEM, and XRD. The preparation of nanocomposites was confirmed by FT-IR and XRD. SEM pictures showed that the organoclay was dispersed well in the PAA matrix relatively. XRD results indicated that the O-MMT layers were intercalated. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of O-MMT/PPAA nanocomposites were higher than those of pure PAA. PCFC results also showed that the heat release capacity and total heat release values of O-MMT 4 wt%/PPAA-0.2, 0.4, 0.6 composites were decreased with increasing the mole ratio of phosphorous. It was found that the nanocomposite films had the potential to be used as a fire safe material.
Sonoluminescence (SL) is the light emitting phenomenon accompanied with ultrasonic cavitation in liquid. It attracts many interests because physics behind it remains uncertain and few applications have appeared. It has been known that the color of SL changes in solutions which include metallic ions. In the present work, colors of SL in alkali metallic and alkaline earth metallic ions were considered. RGB component was used to analyze the color of SL. By using RGB component, it was found that color of SL in metallic solution can be resolved into color of SL in pure water and flame color of metal which is different from high intensity color of line spectrum of alkaline earth metal. From this result, influence of metallic ion on SL and the temperature on violent collapsing of cavitation bubble was discussed.

A mass balance method established in this laboratory was applied to determine the purity of an endosulfan-II pure substance. Gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) was used to measure organic impurities. Total of 10 structurally related organic impurities were detected by GC-FID in the material. Water content was determined to be 0.187% by Karl-Fischer (K-F) coulometry with an oven-drying method. Non-volatile residual impurities was not detected by Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) within the detection limit of 0.04% (0.7 ${\mu}g$ in absolute amount). Residual solvents within the substance were determined to be 0.007% in the Endosulfan-II pure substance by running GC-FID after dissolving it with two solvents. The purity of the endosulfan-II was finally assigned to be ($99.17{\pm}0.14$)%. Details of the mass balance method including interpretation and evaluating uncertainties of results from each individual methods and the finally assayed purity were also described.

The effects of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) content, carbon black (CB) content, atmospheric-pressure flame plasma (APFP) treatment, and acid treatment on the mechanical properties of elastomeric composites were investigated. For pure or filled rubbers with the given amount of CB (20 and 40 phr), the tensile strength and modulus of the elastomeric composites increase similarly with the MWCNT content. A composite with APFP-treated MWCNTs shows a hardening effect (high strength, high modulus, and high ductility) unlike the one with untreated MWCNTs. On the other hand, a composite with APFP-treated CB shows a softening effect (high strength, low modulus, and high ductility), which is unlike a composite with untreated CB. As the refluxing time increases from 1 h to 2 h and the sulfuric acid concentration increases from 60% to 90%, the tensile strength and modulus of a composite decrease. Thus, it is found that the MWCNT content, CB content, APFP treatment, sulfuric acid concentration, and refluxing time have an important effect on the mechanical properties of NBR composites.

Lithium ions can induce the thermal runaway phenomenon and lead to reignition due to electrical, mechanical, and environmental factors such as high temperature, smoke generation, explosions, or flames, which is extremely likely to create safety concerns. Therefore, one of the ways to improve the flame retardancy of the electrolyte is to use a flame-retardant additive. Comparing the associated characteristic value of existing substances with the required experimental value, it was found that these values were either considerably different or were not documented. It is vital to know a substance's combustion characteristic values, flash point, explosion limit, and autoignition temperature (AIT) as well as its combustion characteristics before using it. In this research, the flash point and AIT of materials were measured by mixing a highly volatile and flammable substance, diethyl carbonate (DEC), with flame-retardant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The flash point of DEC, which is a pure substance, was 29℃, and that for DMMP was 65℃. Further, the lower explosion limit calculated using the measured flash point of DEC was 1.79 Vol.%, while that for DMMP was 0.79 Vol.%. The AIT was 410℃ and 390℃ for DEC and DMMP, respectively. In particular, since the AIT of DMMP has not been discussed in any previous study, it is necessary to ensure safety through experimental values. In this study, the experimental and regression analysis revealed that the average absolute deviation (ADD) for the flash point of the DEC+DMMP DEC+DMMP system is 0.58 sec and that the flash point tends to increase according to changes in the composition employed. It also revealed that the AAD for the AIT of the mixture was 3.17 sec and that the AIT tended to decrease and then increase based on changes in the composition.
Organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) has attracted much attention for fiber-reinforced polymer composites as a filler material due to high aspect ratio and low charge density. The present study focused on the fabrication of nanocomposites using Vinyl ester and Jute fabric as matrix and reinforcement respectively. The OMMT was uniformly dispersed in vinyl ester resin at 1, 2 and 3 wt%, loading through high speed mechanical stirrer at room temperature and further nanocomposites were manufactured through vacuum assisted resin infusion (VARI) technique. Effects of OMMT on the mechanical properties of vinyl ester/Jute composites were carefully investigated through tensile, bending and Izod impact tests, which revealed significant improvement in mechanical properties. The morphology of the nanocomposites after tensile test was investigated by SEM which affirmed that OMMT filled nanocomposites has improved interactions with the host matrix than the pure composites. Based on the nature and flame retardancy mechanism, the OMMT slightly improved the flammability property which was clearly explained by horizontal burning test.

In this study, we investigated the analytical techniques to quantify the ambient concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S) in air at ppt concentration level. For this purpose, an on-line GC analytical system equipped with both pulsed-flame photometric detector (PFPD) and thermal desorption unit (TDU) was investigated by collecting ambient air samples. The results of our study generally indicated that calibration conditions of GC system is highly sensitive to affect the accuracy of the analytical technique. Most importantly. we found that the use of different matrices in the the preparation stage of working standards was sensitive to control the overall performance of this technique. The calibration of our analytical system was tested by the two types of working standard (prepared by mixing either with high purity $N_2$ or with the ambient air). According to this test, the latter represented more efficiently the detecting conditions of actual air samples. The peak occurrence patterns of both air samples and standards (prepared by mixing with ambient air) were altered in a similar manner as the function of the loaded volume; however, it was not the case for the $N_2$-mixed standards. Results of our study suggest that detection of H$_2$S is highly different from other sulfides and that its quantification requires minimiaing interfering effects of non -pure substance (like water vapor) and (either sorptive or destructive) loss effects.
A microwave plasma torch at the atmospheric pressure by making use of magnetrons operated at the 2.45 GHz and used in a home microwave oven has been developed. This electrodeless torch can be used to various areas, including industrial, environmental and military applications. Although the microwave plasma torch has many applications, we in the present work focused on the microwave plasma torch operated in pure steam and several applications, which may be used in future and right now. For example, a high-temperature steam microwave plasma torch may have a potential application of the hydrocarbon fuel reforming at one atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the radicals including hydrogen, oxygen and hydroxide molecules are abundantly available in the steam torch, dramatically enhancing the reaction speed. Also, the microwave plasma torch can be used as a high-temperature, large-volume plasma burner by injecting hydrocarbon fuels in gas, liquid, and solid into the plasma flame. Lastly, we briefly report an underway research, which is remediation of soils contaminated with oils, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, etc.
Characteristics of laminar lifted names in coflow jet with various coflow velocities have been studied experimently. USlI1g the fuel nozzle with d=0.254 for the pure propane, liftoff heights are fitted by using power equation with jet velocity. As coflow velocity increases up to 60 cm/s powers of fitting equation steeply decrease. From the result of numerical analysis using the FLUENT, the stoichiometry contour and the axial velocity nondimensionalized by initial jet velocity along the stoichiometry contour are changed with variations of coflow velocities, The change of axial velocity along stoichiometric contour is more sensitive than that of stoichiometric contour, For this reason, powers of fitting equation for liftoff height with jet velocity decreases with the increase of coflow velocity. Using the fuel nozzle with d=4,35 mm for the highly diluted propane by nitrogen, the liftoff height increases with the increase of coflow velocity when coflow velocity is less than the maximum value of initial jet velocity. But when coflow velocity is faster than that, the liftoff height decreases with the increase of coflow velocity.

Recently, gas turbines for power generation adopt multistage DLN(Dry Low NOx) type combustion, where diffusion combustion is applied at low load and, with increase in load, the combustion mode is changed to lean premixed combustion to reduce NOx emissive concentration. However, during the mode changeover from diffusion to premixed flame, unfavorable phenomena, such as flashback, high amplitude combustion oscillations, or thermal damage of combustor parts could frequently occur. In the present study, to apply for the analysis of such unfavorable phenomena, three-dimensional CFD investigations are carried out to compare the detailed flow characteristics and temperature distribution inside the gas turbine combustor before and after combustion mode changeover. The fuel considered here is pure methane gas. A standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function and a P-N type radiation heat transfer model, have been utilized. To analyze the complex geometric effects of combustor parts on combustion characteristics, fuel nozzles, a swirl vane f3r fuel-air mixing, and cooling air holes on the combustor liner wall, are included in this simulation.
