Sustainable fashion products have different characteristics from typical fashion products. Therefore, this study focuses on shoes while exploring the expansion and development of sustainable fashion consumption as well as consumers' perceptions of the sustainability approaches practiced by shoe companies. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 consumers, who had purchased sustainable shoes, in order to understand their purchase decision-making process and consumption characteristics, using the seven stages of the EBM model. In the "need recognition" stage, the survey participants' social background and family influences were categorized as macro factors, while their personal background influences were categorized as micro factors. In the "evaluation of alternatives" stage, participants reconfirmed whether or not to make a purchase based on the product's properties, such as price, brand value, and offered services. In the "purchase" stage, participants' purchase channels were determined according to their preferences as well as the selection pattern they followed until the final purchase within the chosen channel. In the "consumption" stage, the start of product ownership coincides with the start of using the products after making a purchase. In the "post-purchase assessment" stage, higher positive experiences led to a higher repurchase intention of sustainable shoes, while negative experiences caused participants to defer consumption and made them experience a sense of guilt for failing to consume sustainably. During the "post-purchase behavior" stage, which focused on the categories that the customers prioritized, many participants spread information about sustainable fashion to specific individuals through active online WOM behavior.
This study investigates the factors influencing consumer's channel selection for luxury fashion items, specifically the effect of (i) perceived luxury benefits, (ii) perceived online shopping risks, (iii) demographics, and (iv) purchasing behavior. A survey questionnaire was developed and implemented to measure the perceived luxury benefits, perceived online shopping risks, purchasing behaviors, and consumer demographics. A total of 396 responses were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, cross-tab, and multinomial logit analysis with SPSS18.0. The results are as follows. First, those who shop in offline shopping channels tend to be heavy buyers that look for product quality and conspicuousness. They perceive low risks from online shopping and purchase few bag items offline. Second, those who shop online tend to be men and perceive the high benefits of economic value. Third, those who shop in multi channels tend to be men, search for information via the Internet, and purchase few accessory items. Implications for multichannel strategies are suggested.
Purpose - This study reestablished the concept of mixed emotions experienced in online and offline shopping environments, and structuralized emotional responses which manifest mixed emotions in each channel, and developed a method of measuring overall mixed emotions in consideration of the asymmetry of emotions. Design/methodology/approach - This study conducted a focus in-depth interview based on phenomenological research and exploratory preliminary survey using questionnaires. In addition, a survey was conducted as a quantitative survey. Findings - Qualitative and quantitative researches were conducted to derive major emotional responses items which manifest mixed emotions in online and offline shopping environments and determine differential emotional structure in each channel. As a result, it was confirmed that mixed emotions consisted of 5 factors in each channel and 21 emotional responses. In addition, a method of measuring overall mixed emotions considering the asymmetric of emotions was developed to prove the difference in behavioral responses. Research implications or Originality - This study is meaningful in that it helps companies efficiently manage and understand customer responses to their products by classifying and systemizing the emotional responses experienced by consumers in online and offline purchase and consumption situations according to the purchase environment.
With the expansion of various distribution channels in online and offline stores, TV, and mobile, consumers now have more information search and retail selection channels to choose from than ever before. Major retailers now use multi- and omni-channel strategies. This study focused on cross-channel consumption, which involves the use of different information search and purchase channels. Using cross-channel consumption, consumers can search for information online and then make purchases offline and vice versa. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between channel strategies and other consumer variables, and the study also assessed the effect of product type. To conduct this empirical study, the researchers developed a consumer questionnaire concerning three consumer channel strategies-on-on, cross, and off-off-and four product categories-clothing, cosmetics, books, and electronics. The results indicated that gender and marital status did not influence consumer channel strategies, but that age did have a significant influence. The analysis showed that consumers in their 40s preferred the cross channel strategy, perceiving it to be effective, satisfactory, and rewarding. Compared to other products, clothing products showed higher levels of cross channel strategies. Consumers indicated that they prefer searching for information online and then purchasing clothing offline. Overall, clothing products generated higher levels of channel satisfaction and channel switch intentions. Cross-channel clothing shoppers reported effective information retrieval times but longer delivery times.
Due to recent proliferation of the mobile shopping channels, customers increasingly tend to purchase using online channel while experiencing physical products in offline shops. This phenomenon requires traditional offline retailers to consider integrating online channels. In this study, we propose strategic options for the traditional offline retailers regarding the online channel integration, and provide corresponding decision models to maximize the expected profits. We also investigate how the strategic options vary with the product characteristics, by categorizing the products based on inventory cost, demand uncertainty, and fitness to the online channels. By analyzing numerical examples we illustrate how the best online channel integration strategy should be differentiated depending on the product categories.
This research analyzes the influence of mobile commerce characteristics on consumer's purchase intention using a theoretical Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) constructed on previous studies and a review of the literature to explain the effect of mobile fashion shopping characteristics on consumer's purchase intention. In constructing structural equation model, Mobile commerce characteristics variables such as 'security', 'enjoyment', and 'personalization' were selected as external variables affecting TAM. A questionnaire was distributed to consumers in their 20's-30's who had purchased fashion products using a mobile shopping channel. Statistical methods of confirmatory factor analysis, correlation, and covariance structural analysis using Amos 19.0 package were employed for the analysis of 453 effective data responses. The results were as follows. First, extended TAM was shown be the appropriate model to explain the influence of mobile commerce characteristics on consumer's purchase intention in mobile fashion shopping. Second, 'security' had a significant positive influence on perceived usefulness (PU), however it affected perceived ease of use (PEOU) negatively. Third, 'enjoyment' had a significant influence only on PEOU, while 'personalization' was found to affect both PEOU and PU significantly. Fourth, PEOU affected PU significantly. Finally, both PEOU and PU had a significant influence on consumer's purchase intention.
Consumers' great demand for foreign apparel products created a new rapidly growing type of distribution channel that substitute traditional roles of importers. Most of the merchandise selling at this new type of e-mall are apparel and accessories. But, little study focuses on this new e-shopping mall. This study was designed to examine SISM(surrogate internet shopping mall) shopping behavior of apparel by analyzing purchase motives and consumer satisfaction and compare these variables with GISM(general internet shopping mall) shopping behavior. 166 SISM consumers and 166 GISM consumers responded for the study. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and regression were used far statistical analysis. Results indicated that there were significant mean differences of purchase motive and consumer satisfaction between SISM and GISM consumers. Regression analysis showed that purchase motives had significant influence on consumer satisfaction for SISM and GISM consumers.
As merging online and offline channels into one single platform, individuals could easily and frequently switch between online and offline channels. In order for understanding such unique behaviors, this study attempts to explore why and how consumers choose their channels to search and purchase a product. We have drawn on multiple theories that have been used to explain individuals' judgment and decision making (i.e., construal level theory and regula-tory focus theory) in order to develop and tested two-way ANOVA based models of how both regulatory focus (e.g., promotion vs. prevention) and product types (e.g., experience goods vs. searching goods) including the psychological distance cue separately and jointly affect individuals' channel selection behavior (e.g., intention to use single channel vs. intention to use cross-channels). Our results have indicated that consumers with promotion-focus are more likely to use a single channel in experience goods rather than in searching goods when there exists the psychological cue. Based on our findings, the implication for both research and practice are discussed.
The purposes of this study are to provide comprehensive reviews on multichannel consumer behaviors published in peer-reviewed academic journals from 2005 to 2014, to develop a conceptual framework that demonstrates multichannel determinants such as psychographics, demographics, social influences, and situational factors on consumers' search and purchase behavior based on customers' profits or costs judgment, and to provide possible direction for future research in multichannel consumer behavior. Three steps were taken in the process of analyzing consumers' channel determinants presented in the 37 studies, and 12 most frequently used factors that appear in the studies were extracted. These factors include convenience, service, trust/risk, saving money, product knowledge, experience, efficacy/usefulness, involvement, shopping environment/situation factors, demographics, product types, and social influence. With 12 determinants of multichannel consumers' search and purchase behavior, a conceptual framework was proposed based on expectancy theory. The directions for future research were also discussed.
