This study reports on the structural characteristics of slab-column connections using an ultra-high-strength-fiber-reinforced concrete from new and retrospective data. The parameters investigated were the ' puddling ' of ultra-high-strength-fiber-reinforced concrete and the use of high-strength concrete in the slab. The effects of these parameters on the punching shear capacity, negative moment cracking, and stiffness of the two-way slab specimens are investigated. Furthermore, the ACI Code (2002), the CSA Standard (1994), the BS Standard (1985) and the CEB-FIP Code (1990) predictions are compared to the experimental results obtained from some slab-column connections tested in this experiment and those tested by other investigators. The beneficial effects of the ultra-high-strength-fiber-reinforced concrete puddling and of the use of high-strength concrete are demonstrated. It is also concluded that the punching shear strength of slab-column connections is a function of the flexural reinforcement ratio.

This paper summarizes full-scale test results on CFT column-to-flat plate connections subjected to gravity loading. CFT construction has gained wide acceptance in a relatively short time in domestic building construction practice due to its various structural and construction advantages. However, efficient details for CFT column to flat plate connections have not been proposed yet. Based on the strategies that maximize economical field construction, several connecting schemes were proposed and tested. Test results showed that the proposed connections can exhibit punching shear strength and connection stiffness exceeding those of R/C flat plate counterparts. A semi-analytical procedure is presented to model the behavior of CFT column-to-flat plate connections. The five parameters to model elastic to post-punching catenary action range are calibrated based on the limited test data of this study. The application of the proposed modeling procedure to progressive collapse prevention design is also illustrated.
In this study, in order to observe the behaviors of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened and steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens for impact and static loads, flexural and punching tests were performed. For the one-way flexural and two-way punching tests, concrete specimens with the dimensions of $50{\times}100{\times}350$ mm and $50{\times}350{\times}350$ mm were fabricated, respectively. The steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens showed much enhanced resistance on two-way punching of static and impact loads. In addition the FRP strengthening system provided the outstanding performance under a punching load. Because of a large tensile strength and toughness of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC), the UHPC specimens retrofitted with FRP showed marginally enhanced strength and energy dissipating capacity.
In order to reduce the accidents occurring at construction sites, it is necessary to approach with harmonious measures considering various aspects such as systems, training, facilities, and protection equipments. Suggestion of safe construction method can be a good alternative. In the previous study, the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel was proposed as an alternative method for safe bridge deck construction, and the performance required by the design code was verified through a four-point bending test. But the actual bridge deck is subjected to the repetitive action of the wheel load rather than the bending condition due to the four-point load. In this study, fatigue test was performed by repeating the wheel load $2{\times}10^6$ cycles to verify the safety of the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel under actual conditions. As a result, fatigue effect due to repetition of wheel load was not significant in terms of serviceability such as crack width and deflection. In the residual strength test conducted after the fatigue test, the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel failed by punching shear which is typical failure mode of bridge decks and the residual strength was similar to the punching strength of the RC and PSC bridge decks in spite of the fatigue effects.
Recently, the use of high-strength concrete is increasing due to the trend of constructing high-rise and long span structures. The benefit of using the high-strength concrete is that it increases the durability and strength while it reduces the cross-sectional area of the bridge deck slabs. Moreover, it offers more safety as these bridge deck slabs applying high-strength requires strict structural performance verification. In this study, the fatigue performance of the bridge deck slabs applying 80 MPa high-strength concrete was verified through various experiments. The experimental results showed that the specimens satisfy the conditions of flexural strength, punching shear strength, deflection and cracking. In conclusion, the bridge deck slabs designed by 80 MPa high-strength concrete are enough safe despite of its low thickness.
Lately, the high-strength concrete is often used to increase the lifespan of bridges. The benefits of using the high-strength concrete are that it increases the durability and strength. On the contrary, it reduces the cross-section of the bridges. This study conducted structural performance tests of the bridge deck slabs applying high-strength concrete. As result of the tests, specimens of bridge deck slabs were destroyed through punching shear. Moreover, the tests exposed that the high-strength concrete bridge deck slabs satisfy the flexural strength and the punching shear strength at ultimate limit state(ULS). Also, limiting deflection of the concrete fulfilled serviceability limit state(SLS) criteria. These results indicated that the bridge deck slabs designed by high-strength concrete were enough to secure the safety factor despite of its low thickness.
This paper summarizes full-scale gravity-load test results on CFT column-to-RC flat plate connections reinforced with shearhead. CFT construction has many structural and constructional advantages over conventional steel and RC column construction and is gaining wide acceptance. Meanwhile the use of RC flat plate system in the basement and residential floors of tall buildings is often mandatory to reduce story height and enable rapid construction in domestic practice. Combining CFT column and flat plate floor is expected to result in further rapid construction. However, the issues related to connecting CFT column to RC flat plate have not been fully addressed yet. Several promising connecting schemes by using steel shearhead were proposed and tested in this study. Test results showed that the proposed connection can exhibit the punching shear strength higher than RC flat plate counterparts. An empirical formula that can reasonably predicts the punching shear strength of the proposed connection was also proposed.
In the current study, punching behavior of Reinforced concrete (RC) isolated footings was experimentally and numerically investigated. The experimental program consisted of four half-scale RC isolated footing specimens. The test matrix was proposed to show effect of footing area, reinforcement mesh ratio, adding internal longitudinal reinforcement bars and stirrups on the punching response of RC isolated footings. Footings area varied from 1200×1200 mm2 to 1500×1500 mm2 while the mesh reinforcement ratio was in the range from 0.36 to 0.45%. On the other hand, a 3D non-linear finite element model was constructed using ABAQUS/standard program and verified against the experimental program. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental records. The validated numerical model was used to study effect of concrete compressive strength; longitudinal reinforcement bars ratio and stirrups concentration along one or two directions on the ultimate load, deflection, stiffness and failure patterns of RC isolated footings. Results concluded that adding longitudinal reinforcement bars did not significantly affect the punching response of RC isolated footings even high steel ratios were used. On the contrary, as the stirrups ratio increased, the ultimate load of RC isolated footings increased. Footing with stirrups ratio of 1.5% had ultimate load equal to 1331 kN, 19.6% higher than the bare footing. Moreover, adding stirrups along two directions with lower ratio (0.5 and 0.7%) significantly enhanced the ultimate load of RC isolated footings compared to their counterparts with higher stirrups ratio (1.0 and 1.5%).

This study was performed to evaluate the static strength of long-span PSC deck slabs. In the previous study, the minimum thickness of PSC deck slabs in the composite two-girder bridge was proposed. To examine the structural behavior and safety of the PSC deck slabs designed in accordance with the proposed minimum thickness, 1/3 scaled PSC deck slabs in the composite two-girder bridge were tested under the static loading. The test results were compared with the predicted values proposed by the code and Matsui. Test results showed ultimate static strength of the PSC deck slabs designed in accordance with the proposed minimum thickness have enough margin of safety. The static failure mode of each test specimen was punching shear mode.

To overcome the common deficiencies found in two-way slabs, such as excessive cracking around columns, excessive deflections and low punching shear strength, it was proposed to investigate the strategic use of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. Providing fiber-reinforced concrete results in an increase in the punching shear resistance, a significant increase in the ductility, greater post-cracking stiffness and better crack control.
