  • This paper describes a control algorithm and test results of an automated manual transmission clutch actuated by a stepping motor. The control algorithm extracts driver's demand from CAN signals and decides the exact timing to engage or disengage the clutch based on the demand. A pulse signal is generated to drive the clutch and the travel of the clutch can be calculated by accumulating the pulse signal. An auto code generation method was introduced in implementing the control logic to the micro-processor of the prototype controller and a series of basic tests were carried out to validate its performance.

  • A Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating(SHG FROG) system was developed. Its performance test shows that it is capable of accurately measuring the temporal evolution of the electric field, both amplitude and phase, of femtosecond light pulses. For the retrieval of the temporal evolution of light pulses from their spectrograms obtained by using the FROG system, Principal Components Generalized Projection(PCGP) algorithm is used and in addition we used additional constraints of second-harmonic spectrum, marginals in frequency and time-delay of the spectrogram. Such modification of the software brings about significant improvement in speed and stability of the pulse retrieval process.

  • We propose a modified nonlinear fiber optic interferometer which can serve to generate binary optical pulse sequences for CDMA networks, and to decode them. In one arm cross-phase modulation between a CW signal and a counter- or copropagating high-power pulse takes place in sequences of segment connected via VDM couplers. Preliminary experimental results on code generation as well as autocorrelation and crosscorrelation are presented, using Sagnac interferometer. As we expected, the experimental results show that the outputs of the interferometer device are not summed simply on the basis of power, but the sin-squared version of it. Arbitrary codes can in principle be implemented.

  • The selective catalytic reduction(SCR) system used to reduce NOx in diesel engines requires an NO/$NO_2$ ratio of about 1 in exhaust emissions to realize the fast SCR mode at temperatures lower than $300^{\circ}C$. This study investigated the characteristics of a plasma system as a pre-active apparatus for the fast SCR reaction mode of an SCR system. Plasma was generated by the pulse corona discharge(PCD) method with a four-channel wire-cylinder reactor. This study showed that plasma was easily generated in the exhaust gas by the PCD system, and the peak voltage of the normal state condition for plasma generation was generally 12 kV. The PCD system easily converted NO into $NO_2$ at lower temperatures and the NO/$NO_2$ conversion ratio increased with the discharge current for plasma generation. But the PCD system could not convert NO into $NO_2$ at higher engine speeds and higher engine loads due to the lack of oxygen in exhaust gas. The PCD system also activated the diesel oxidation catalysts(DOC) system to reduce CO emissions.

  • 3D linear and circular interpolations are a basic part for the machining of complex shapes. Until now, because of the absence of appropriate algorithms for the generation of 3D lines and circles, a full accomplishment for available machine tool resolution is difficult. this paper presents new algorithms for 3D linear and circular interpolation in the reference pulse technique. In 3D space, the line or circle is not expressed as an implicit function, it is only defined as the intersection of two surfaces. A 3D line is defined as the intersection of two planes, and a 3D circle is defined as the intersection of a plane and the surface of a sphere. Based on these concepts, interpolation algorithms are designed to follow intersection curves in 3D space, and a real-time 3D linear and circular interpolator was developed in software using a PC. The algorithm implemented in a PC showed promising results in interpolation error and speed performance. It is expected that it can be applied to the next generation computerized numerical control systems for the machining of 3D lines, circles and some other complex shapes.

  • For the reliable transmission of meaningful visual information using prosthetic electrical stimulation, it is required to develop an effective stimulation strategy for the generation of electrical pulse trains based on input visual information. The characteristics of neuronal activities of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) evoked by electrical stimulation should be understood for this purpose. In this study, for the development of an optimal stimulation strategy for visual prosthesis, we analyzed the neuronal responses of RGCs in rd1 mouse, photoreceptor-degenerated retina of animal model of retinal diseases (retinitis pigmentosa). Based on the in-vitro model of epiretinal prosthesis which consists of planar multielectrode array (MEA) and retinal patch, we recorded and analyzed multiunit RGC activities evoked by amplitude-modulated electrical pulse trains. Two modes of responses were observed. Short-latency responses occurring at 3 ms after the stimulation were estimated to be from direct stimulation of RGCs. Long-latency responses were also observed mainly at 2 - 100 ms after stimulation and showed rhythmic firing with same frequency as the oscillatory background field potential. The long-latency responses could be modulated by pulse amplitude and duration. From the results, we expect that optimal stimulation conditions such as pulse amplitude and pulse duration can be determined for the successful transmission of visual information by electrical stimulation.

  • Spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) was fabricated and used to characterize pulses from a Ti:sapphire oscillator. In the SPIDER apparatus, two replicas of the input pulse were generated with a time delay of 200 fs and were upconverted by use of sum-frequency generation with a strongly chirped pulse using a 8-cm-long SFIO glass block at a 30-11m-thick type II BBO (p-BaBz04) crystal. The resulting interferogram was recorded with a UV-enhanced CCD array in the spectrometer. The spectral phase was retrieved by SPIDER algorithm in combination with independently measured pulse spectrum and the corresponding temporal intensity profile was reconstructed with a duration of 19 fs. As an independent cross-check of the accuracy of the method, we compared the interferometric autocorrelation (lAC) signal calculated from the SPIDER data with a separately measured lAC. The conventional, but unjustified, method of fitting a sechz pulse to the autocorrelation deceivingly yielded a pulse duration of 15 fs. This systematic underestimation of the pulse duration affirms the need for a complete characterization method. From the consideration in this paper, we concluded that the SPIDER could provide an accurate characterization of femtosecond pulses. ulses.
