  • This paper presents experimental results carried out on the purge characteristic of the anodic dead-end mode fuelcell and how to improve the cell performance by pulsation effects. The dead-end mode fuelcell has some merits that a fuel supplying device is not needed and the cell power is higher than that in the open mode fuelcell. However, the purge is necessary for preventing the porous media from being flooded by liquid water formed in the channel. At this time, the un-reacted fuel is discharged with the liquid water together in purge process. The discharged fuel can make the fuel efficiency lower. Therefore, the number of purge times should be decreased for the better fuel efficiency. In this study, the outlet of the anode channel was equipped with a purge solenoid valve and a pulsation generator. The purge times was decreased when the current density decreased and operation pressure increased without the pulsation effects. In addition, when the pulsation effects such as various frequencies or amplitudes were applied, purge times was alleviated up to 40%.

  • A majority of piping vibration problems are induced by internal fluid pulsation; turbulent flow, vortex shedding at internal discontinuities, and pressure pulsation at equipment nozzles. The pulsation at the pressure sources resonates acoustically with the piping and the amplified pressure pulsation can generate shell mode vibration in the piping. Reheater attemperator piping supplies water from feedwater pump to reheater attemperator to control the boiler temperature. In normal operating condition, the high frequency shell mode vibration occurred in the piping with the high level of sound(105 ${\sim}$ 117 dB). The vibration sources are pressure pulsation in the pump nozzle and the frequencies are related to the blade passing frequencies. The objects of this paper are to analyze the cause of the high frequency vibration and to establish corrective actions.

  • Pressure pulsation of exciting sources that generally occurs on the piping system connected to the discharge of BFP(boiler feed water pump) in power plants causes wave reflection, wave interference, resonance, standing wave and so on. But if the operating speed of the pump is changed, the state of the noise and vibration can be done because characteristics of the exciting source are changed. This paper is to investigate the cause of the noise and vibration occurring on the piping system when the operating speed of BFP is down in accordance with lowering of the power generation. It is approached to two points of view ; Firstly, it is examined whether the pulsation source impacts on the shell mode vibration that vibrates radially across the cross-section of the pipe. But it doesn't affect the shell mode as much as the resonance occurs. Secondly, to find the relation between the pulsation source and the acoustic mode of the piping system, analysis for the piping system by indirect BEM(boundary element method) is carried out. Therefore it is investigated that the mechanism of the noise and vibration relates with acoustic mode of the piping system.

  • In this study, we examined a morningside Pi2 pulsation, with a non-substorm signature, that occurred in very quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp = 0) at 05:38 UT on December 8, 2012, using data obtained by Van Allen Probes A and B (VAP-A and VAP-B, respectively) and at a ground station. Using 1 sec resolution vector magnetic field data, we measured the X-component of the pulsation from the Abu Simbel ground station (L = 1.07, LT = UT +2 hr, where LT represents local time) in Egypt. At the time of the Pi2 event, Abu Simbel and VAP-A (L = 3.3) were in the morning sector (07:38 LT and 07:59 MLT, respectively, where MLT represents magnetic local time), and VAP-B was in the postmidnight sector (04:18 MLT and L = 5.7). VAP-A and VAP-B observed oscillations in the compressional magnetic field component (Bz), which were in close agreement with the X-component measurements of the Pi2 pulsation that were made at Abu Simbel. The oscillations observed by the satellites and on the ground were in phase. Thus, we concluded that the observed morningside Pi2 pulsation was caused by the cavity resonance mode rather than by ionospheric current systems.

  • We analyze the self-pulsation(SP) characteristics due to mode beating of two modes emitted in a multi-section complex-coupled (CC) DFB laser composed of two DFB sections and a phase control section between them. SP frequency due to mode beating of the two modes is determined by the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions. As the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions increases, the SP frequency increases from very low frequency to the THz region. In the case of a mode which is not located in the stop band of the other DFB region, the mode propagates into the other DFB region without a high reflection, so that output powers emitted in a multi-section CC DFB laser have high modulation indexes due to the large interaction between the two modes.

  • In a utility interactive photovoltaic generation system. a PWM inverter is used for the connection between the p photovoltaic arrays and the utility. The dc current becomes pulsated when the conventional inverter system operates i in the continuous current mode and de current pulsation causes the distortion of the accurrent waveform. This paper p presents the reduced pulsation of de input current by operating the inverter with buck-boost chopper in the d discontinuous conduction mode. The dc current which contains harmonic component is analyzed by means of s separating into two terms of a ripple component and a direct component. The constant dc current without p pulsation is supplied from photovoltaic array to the inverter. The proposed inverter system provides a sinusoidal ac c current for domestic loads and the utility line with unity power factor.

  • The nuclear reactor coolant pump transferring heat energy inherently brings with it the unsteady flow and inevitably threatens to the safe operation of the pump unit, especially with the pressure pulsation induced by the rotor-stator interaction. In this paper, the characteristics of pressure pulsation of the diffuser in a nuclear reactor coolant pump were investigated by the numerical simulation with experimental validation. Pressure pulsation signals measured synchronously from sensors mounted on the radial diffuser of a model pump were analyzed via Welch's method. Frequency components induced by the rotor-stator interaction can be revealed by the diameter mode analysis method. The pressure pulsation of the diffuser is dominated by the blade passing frequency and its harmonics, which are free from the effect of flow rate and rotational speed while the corresponding amplitudes are easily affected by different operational conditions and measuring positions. The non-uniformity is much more affected by the rotational speed than the flow rate. This research is helpful for further work to reduce the pressure pulsation for the reactor coolant pump.

  • Cooler driver electronics (CDE) for maintaining low temperature of the satellite payload IR sensor consists of a compressor that has a pulsation current load condition when it is operated. This pulsation current produces large voltage fluctuation, which affects both load and regulated bus stability. Thus, CDE power conditioning system consists of a primary bus, infrared power distribution unit for battery charging and protection, reverse current protection diode, and battery, which is used as a buffer. In this study, the operational mode analysis is performed by each part with equivalent impedance modeling verified through system level simulation. From this mode analysis, the safety margin for state of charge and open circuit voltage of the battery is determined for satisfying the minimum operational voltage of the CDE load.

  • The reciprocating type hydrogen compressor has a pulsation due to the reciprocative characteristics which results in noise and vibration. Snubber is installed for the relaxation of pulsation, but it causes reduction of compressor efficiency because of pressure loss. Five types of snubber were modeled for the numerical investigation of the effect of the relative position of inlet and outlet and buffer angle on the pulsation amplitude and pressure loss. MSC/NASTRAN is used as a numerical tool to identify the vibration characteristic of each type. Frequency responses in forced vibration mode are compared for various cases and buffer angles.
