The Study of Restoration Technique of Wax-Treated Volume for the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (III) -Evaluation of Durability of Korean Traditional Paper using Moist-heat Aging Treatment- (조선왕조실록 밀랍본 복원기술 연구(제3보) -습열열화처리를 이용한 복원용 한지의 내구성 평가-)

  • To explore the paper materials for restoration of the Annals of the Joseon Dyansty, durability of the three type of the traditional Korean Papers were estimated in this study, through moist heat artificial aging test. Three types(D, F, and G) which showed the best preservation performance in dry heat and UV treatment in the previous study were selected and artificial accelerated aging treatment with moist-heat process was conducted; the viscosity change rate was D>G>F; folding endurance G>D>F; $L^*$ value F>D>G; $a^*$ and $b^*$ change rate D>G>F; brightness decrease rate D>G>F, suggesting paper F showed the least change rate in physical/optical properties. Also the CLSM image observation showed fair coherence among fibers and confirmed paper mulberry. And in FDI extraction from each sample, paper F showed the highest value. Overall, paper F (traditional glossy paper) showed the highest stability against thermal treatment. It confirms that paper F is suitable as restoration paper for tributary remains including the annals of the Joseon Dynasty for its steady strength/viscosity decrease rate and color change rate.

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of pigment properties in a pre-coating layer on the characteristics of a top-coating layer and the print mottle of the coated paper. Five different pigments were applied for this study as raw materials for the pre-coating layer. The properties and print mottle of the coated paper samples were evaluated according to the coating color formulation. Type of pigments appliied in a pre-coating layer was one of the most important factor to control the properties of pre and top coating layer. Surface properties of pre and top coated paper were improved by blending GCC which had smaller particle size, with clay. Properties of a top-coating layer was affected by the pigment properties used in the pre-coating layer. It was found that print mottle of coated paper can be improved by replacing part of GCC with smaller particle size GCC or clay in pre-coating layer.

A Study on the Bioleaching of Cobalt and Copper from Cobalt Concentrate by Aspergillus niger strains (Aspergillus niger 균주를 이용(利用)한 코발트 정광(精鑛)으로부터 코발트 및 구리의 미생물(微生物) 침출(浸出) 연구(硏究))

  • Bioleaching behavior of metal ions for recovery of cobalt and copper from cobalt concentrate was investigated by employing three Aspergillus niger strains. Various factors, such as organic acid generation with fungi type, pH of the culture and pulp density were studied. The results showed that the best fungi for organic acid(citric acid and oxalic acid) generation was A. niger KCTC 6144 using Malt Extract Broth culture at initial pH 3.5. But A. niger KCTC 6985 was more effective for the leaching of cobalt and copper from cobalt concentrate. Our results showed that 82% cobalt and 98% copper was dissolved by A. niger KCTC 6985 at 10g/L pulp density, at pH 3.5 and $24^{\circ}C$ after 15 days incubation.

  • This review provides an overview of the most commonly used dental age estimation techniques which focus on radiological methods in Korean adults. The literature from 1995 through July 31, 2014, was searched, using PubMed, for publications in English language. In PubMed, the keywords 'tooth' OR 'dental' AND 'pulp' AND 'age estimation' were searched. Inclusion criteria was comprised of the following: the subjects were living adults and dental radiography (excluded computed tomography [CT] and cone-beam CT) was used to measure the pulpal size. Twenty articles that met the criteria were selected. The method of age estimation using dental radiographs for measuring pulp and tooth size was represented in all studies. The methods were assorted into three categories generally; Kvaal's, Ikeda's and Cameriere's methods. Those methods had certain limitations such as large error range and low correlation coefficient depending on populations, type of employed teeth and particular method. Various techniques and many studies have been published for age estimation from human teeth using dental radiographs, but those techniques showed various predictability and reliability. Therefore, future studies on larger samples with well-distributed age group using not only existing techniques but new techniques are necessary for deriving convincing results.

Differences in Microbial Activities of Faeces from Weaned and Unweaned Pigs in Relation to In vitro Fermentation of Different Sources of Inulin-type Oligofructose and Pig Feed Ingredients

  • An in vitro experiment was conducted to evaluate the differences in microbial activity of five faecal inocula from weaned pigs and one faecal inoculum from unweaned pigs in combination with 6 substrates. The substrates tested were negative control diet, corn, soybean meal, oligofructose (OF), ground chicory roots and a mixture (60% chicory pulp and 40% OF). The inocula used were derived from pigs fed either a corn-soy based diet without antibiotics (NCON), the NCON diet supplemented with oligofructose (OF), a mixture of chicory pulp (40%) and OF (60%) (MIX), ground chicory roots (CHR) or the NCON diet supplemented with antibiotics (PCON). The cumulative gas production measured fermentation kinetics and end products, such as total gas production, ammonia and volatile fatty acids, were also determined. Both the substrate and the inoculum significantly affected the fermentation characteristics. The cumulative gas production curve showed that different substrates caused more differences in traits of fermentation kinetics than the different inocula. Inocula of weaned pigs gave a significantly higher VFA production compared to the inoculum from unweaned animals, whilst the rate of fermentation and the total gas produced did not differ. OF showed the highest fermentation kinetics and the lowest $NH_3$, pH and OM loss compared to other substrates. It was concluded that the microbial activity was significantly affected by substrate and inoculum. Inoculum from weaned pigs had more potential for microbial fermentation of the carbohydrate ingredients and oligofructose than that of unweaned pigs. A combination of high and low polymer inulin may be more beneficial to the gut ecosystem than using high- or low-polymer inulin alone.

Effects of the Size and Distribution of Preflocculated GCC on the Physical Properties of Paper

  • Increasing the filler content of sheet improves the optical properties and printability of paper and provides an opportunity for saving production cost through fiber replacement with relatively low-priced filler. But increasing the filler content tends to decrease the strength of paper and filler retention. It also tends to deteriorate drainage on the paper machine. To overcome these problems, preflocculation technology of fillers may be employed. Many research efforts have been made on the properties of preflocculated filler, namely prefloc, whose size and size distribution were influenced by polymer type and shear level. But there is much to be investigated about the effect of the prefloc characteristics on the physical properties of paper. To evaluate the effect cationic polymers on the size and size distribution of preflocculated GCC and their shear stability, cationic PAM and cationic starch were used. The influence of the preflocculation on filler retention and its surface distribution, and the changes of physical and optical properties of handsheets affected by the characteristics of preflocs were examined. Filler distribution on sheet surface was also analyzed by EPMA. Results showed that cationic PAM formed large preflocs at low dosage. Cationic starch was required to add 15 times as much as cationic PAM to obtain the preflocs with similar size. But preflocs formed with cationic starch was superior in shear stability to those formed with cationic PAM. Filler preflocculation technology could provide an opportunity of increasing filler content significantly without loss in tensile strength. And increased filler contents could compensate brightness loss which often accompanies filler preflocculation. When excessively large preflocs were used, however, brightness loss rather than the improvement in tensile strength was predominant. Therefore it is of great importance to produce preflocs with proper size and shear stability for maximizing the improvement of physical properties of papers.

Optimising Ink Setting Properties on Double Coated Wood-free Papers

  • Today's requirements for print-press runnability and print quality demand an optimised absorption and adhesion of printing ink on the paper surface. Modern coating concepts for high glossing offset grades use ultra fine pigments, whereas binder level has continuously been decreased to a minimum in recent years to achieve the highest possible sheet gloss development and for economical reasons. Both the ultra fine pigments and the reduced binder levels lead in many cases to a faster ink setting rate. On the other hand, matt paper grades use relatively coarse pigments leading to a slow ink setting compared to the high glossing papers. Both too fast and too slow ink setting properties implicate drawbacks in print quality and print press runnability. The mechanisms behind the interactions between ink and coating have been presented in many previous publications. The purpose of this study was to determine and quantify how the ink setting rate is influenced by pigment system (GCC and GCC/clay blends), latex level and latex properties in the topcoat of double coated sheet fed offset paper. The roles of binder level and type in the precoat were also assessed. The effect of calendering (temperature and pressure) was studied with one formulation. The resulting ink setting characteristics were tested using three different laboratory testing instruments. The correlation amongst the different laboratory testing methods is discussed. The results show that by varying the latex properties, the pigment system and/or latex addition level, the ink tack development of ink applied to a topcoat pigment system can be significantly influenced. It can be slowed down as often desired with ultra fine pigments or speeded up in the case of coarse pigments.   • Application methods of chemicals were investigated to minimize strength reduction of corrugated boards under the high humidity environment encountered in the cold chain system. Starch insolubilizers were introduced in the starch solution preparation of the Stein hall method and their insolubilization effect of starch binder were estimated. The performance of water repellent agents(WRA) and moisture proof agents(MPA) were evaluated in terms of water and moisture resistance. And effects of the combination of the chemicals and the coating method were also examined. Addition of the polyamine polyamide insolubilizer to the main part in the Stein hall process improved the binding force and water resistance of starch, which contributed to minimize the strength reduction of paper under the high humidity environment. AZC and Glyoxal type insolubilizers could not be used in the experiment due to an excessively increased viscosity of starch solution and the poor stability. Conventional WRA treatment to the base paper enhanced water and moisture resistance very slightly even though water repellency of the paper reached R10 by the treatment. MPA showed excellent performance than WRA not only in water and moisture resistance but in water repellency. Double coating on paper with MPA was more effective than the single coating at the same coating weight. A newly developed MPA showed excellent performance and runnability only by a single coating instead of a double coating.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the lining papers which had been separated from six pieces of paintings and calligraphic works of the 18th and the 20th century. A total 20 kinds of lining papers were examined on the physical properties, colors, fiber morphology, and color reactions. The grammage and thickness of lining papers which had been used hanging-scroll type works were higher than those of folder types. On the other hand, the grammage and thickness of the first layer lining papers which had been separated from silk ground works were lower than those of paper ground works. All kinds of lining papers were colored from yellow to yellowish red because of unbleaching and deterioration. Through the examination on fiber morphology and color reactions, lining papers were verified that all of those were made from paper mulberry bast fiber but the first layer of the Mukjukdo. The lining paper which of the first layer of the Mukjukdo was verified that it was made from mixture of paper mulberry, hemp, and spruce pulps.

DAQ System을 활용한 초지기 맥동현상의 개선

  • 초지 공정은 wire, roll, pump등의 회전체로 이루어진 공정이 거의 대부분이기 때문에 주기적으로 변동하는 성분들이 많고, QCS(Quality Control System) 및 DCS(Distributed Co n ntrol System)상에 서 의 자동 Control Logic에 의 한 불안정 (Fluctuation)요소도 내 재 되 어 있 어 이에 대한 분석이 필요하다. 이러한 주기적인 변동은 제품의 여러 물성(평량, 두께, 광택 도등) 에 영향을 미치게 되어 품질의 균일성이나 프로파일에 영향을 미치게 된다. 따라서 공정상이나 품질에서 주기적으로 변동하는 성분을 추출하여 공정 각 성분과 연관을 시키변 품질에 나타나는 주기적 성분의 요인이 어느 부분에서 기인하는 지를 직접적으로 찾아낼 수 있고 이의 개선을 통해 품질의 균일성 및 프로파일 향상을 꾀할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 Air padded type 헤드박스 초지기에서 DAQ(Data Acquisition) System 을 이용하여 각 공정별로 MD(Machine Direction)방향으로의 변동을 측정하고 제품의 물성 변동과 비교하였다. DAQ System은 각 공정상의 전기적 신호를 높은 주파수 영역까지 다채널로 동시에 받 아 들일 수 있는 장치로 이 시스템을 활용하여 공정상의 Machine chest 농도, Stock box 유량 및 레벨, Fan pump RPM, Cleaner압력, Screen압력, H!B압력 및 레벨, Silo level등 공 정요소의 변동상태와 상호영향을 분석하였다. 이러한 공정 각 요소의 변동과 MD 방향의 제품 물성 값(Tapio, Paper Variation Analyzer에 대한 비교 분석결과 제품 평량에서 주기적인 변동성분을 확인할 수 있었고 이중 큰 비 중을 차지하는 것이 fνB 레벨 변동주기와 일치하는 것을 찾아낼 수 있었다. 이에 근거하여 D DCS system의 control 요소인 튜닝 parameter(P,I 값)들을 미 세 조정 하여 제 품의 MD방향 평량 변동 진폭을 기존 수준의 30% 수준으로 감소시킬 수 있었다. 그 결과 COV(표준편차/ 평량)값을 0.8-1.2%에서 0.6-0.8%수준으로 낮출 수 있었고 이에 따라 CD (Cross Direction) 방향의 제품 Profile도 함께 개선되는 효과를 거둘 수 있었다.
