The empty fruit bunch fibers(EFB) of oil palm were examined for optimal utilization of the EFB fibers. The EFB fibers were obtained by shredding EFB, followe by removal of fines. The surface properties of the fibers were modified with various pre-treatments, such as hot water extraction, the soaking treatments with NaOH, $ClO_2$ and n-hexane. The changes in the fiber surface were examined with FT-IR method, which showed the changes in chemical compositions such as pectin, lignin, and etc. according to the pre-treatment methods. And the z-directional tensile testing of the fiber mold made of the treated EFB fibers showed the changes in the bonding strength by the pre-treatments. The fiber mold made of EFB fibers treated with $ClO_2$ showed the greater increase in the tensile energy absorption although the NaOH treatment resulted in the severer impact on the EFB fibers.
The applicability of oil palm EFB(Empty Fiber Bunch) to the papermaking process as a functional organic filler was investigated in this study. Since the EFB has similar chemical composition to the lignocellulose materials such as wood fiber, the fines of EFB was applied to the handsheet paper as an alternative to wood powder which were used as an organic filler to improve water removal efficiency and bulk. The experiments showed that the EFB fines resulted in the higher water removal efficiency at the wet pressing process and leaded to the higher bulk than those of wood powder. In case of 10 % addition of organic filler, the strength properties were not significantly changed. Those results suggested that the EFB could be used as a new organic filler for improving water removal efficiency and bulk property.
Adsorption of an oil-proof agent (OPA)onto cellulose fibers during the papermaking process was investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometry by measuring the OPA concentration decrease in the solution. From the calibration curve, the spectrum were converted to chemical concentrations in solution, from which the amount adsorbed onto the fiber surface could be determined. Thus, it was possible to determine the total amount adsorbed onto the fibers and in solution. Using this approach, we studied the adsorption behavior of the OPA onto the fiber surface and derived its, ${\Gamma}^s_t={\Gamma}^s_{\infty}(1-e^{-k_{\alpha}t})$. The values of the parameters kaand ${\Gamma}^s_{\infty}$ were determined using a mathematic model based on a mass transfer equation. Ultimately, a complete was derived: $Q={\alpha}{\cdot}\sum\limits_{i-1}^m{\pi}d_il_i{\cdot}M_A{\cdot}(1-e^{-k_{\alpha}t})/A_N$.
In recent years, numerous studies have been carried out to find out the possible substitution of PE-coated paperboards used in packaging of watery or oily foods. Accordingly, this study was carried out to obtain the basic data for producing higher functional coating agents for pulp mold by evaluating various kinds of mixed coating agents. At that time, two kinds of synthetic coating agents(AKD, PYA) and three kinds of natural coating agent(CMC, corn starch, oxidized starch) were used for making the mixed coating agents respectively. Physical properties of coated paperboards were tested. Conclusions obtained from this study were as follows. Based on concentrations, the proper mixture ratios were 10:90(AKD:CMC), 10:90(AKD:corn starch), 10:90(AKD:oxidized starch), 40:60(PVA:CMC), 20:80(PVA:corn starch) and 20:80(PYA:oxidized starch). The mixed coating agent of PYA:corn starch(20:80) was the most efficient coating agent. Consequently, water and oil resistance were improved even with much addition of natural coating agents. We consider that they can be suitable for the packaging used in the storage of higher moisture vegetables and other food, and also can be suitable for oily fried food.
In this study, oil palm biomass such as empty fruit bunch (EFB) and palm kernel shell (PKS) was used as raw materials for making pellets. Hardwood sawdusts were also mixed with EFB and PKS for making pellets. For improving a bad forming behavior in a pelletizer, 1 to 3 per cent of corn starch based on oven-dried weight biomass was added. The starch contributed to the decrease of dust generation in addition to the improvement of forming capability during pellet forming. Heating values of every pellets made of EFB and PKS were higher than 4,300 kcal/kg for the first grade pellet, irrespective of addition of sawdusts. However, the pellets made of EFB and PKS had ash contents over 3 per cent, which made it impossible to be applied for home use. Instead, they could be applied for industrial use. For studying their combustion characteristics, the pellets from the mixtures of EFB, PKS and sawdusts were analyzed using thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA). From the TGA results, thermal decomposition of EFB and PKS occurred following three including endothermic reaction and dehydration, devolatilization of the major chemical components, and finally combustion of residual lignin and char.
The effets of the pretreatments of tropical kapok fibers were evaluated in this study in terms of water sorption capacity and oil sorption capacity. The alkali treatments with NaOH resulted in the reduction of lignin, oil and hemicellulose, which were detected with FT-IR spectrum. The reduction of the lyphophilic components such as fat on kapok fiber by the ozone treatments were also measured with FT-IR spectrum. The oil sorption capacity of kapok fiber was decreased by the alkali treatments and the ozone treatments, while the water sorption capacity was increased. The liquid sorption capacity were greatly affected by the mechanical cutting of kapok fiber which exposed the big lumen of kapok fiber. The hydrophilic property of kapok fiber could be controlled by the pretreatments, which would increase the applicability of kapok fiber for preparation of various functional paper products.
The crop production technologies keep in improving and the cultivation becomes more standardization owing to the significant developments of various agricultural materials. The artificial soil and base system for root could be one of the major technologies for the modern cultivation especially for controlled horticulture. Although the perlite, cocopeat, and peat moss are the major components of the artificial soil and are broadly used for various application, there is a great need for the new alternative materials for overcoming the low nutrition and the possible shortage of raw materials. In this study, the application of oil palm EFB fiber as an alternative materials for artificial soil especially for the seeding pad components was evaluated. The changes in the structural properties and the functional properties such as moisture holding properties were compared by laboratory produced seeding pads with different mixture of oil palm EFB fiber. The addition of fibrillated EFB fiber resulted in the significant increase in durability of the seeding pad, which showed the possible application of EFB fiber to the seeding pad instead of the wood fiber (UBKP). The moisture holding properties and the germination condition characteristics of the EFB fiber showed the slight less than those of the cocopeat, which require more sophisticated study for improving the functional properties of seeding pad made of the EFB fiber.
Powdered additive or organic filler is used to improve paperboard thickness and to reduce drying energy consumption in the Korean paperboard industry. In a previous study, we identified alternative non-lignocellulosic resources to wood powder, specifically brewers grain and oil palm frond powders, and verified that these materials had the same functionality as wood powder. The main drawback of the use of such additives, including both lignocellulosic and non-lignocellulosic resources, is the deterioration in paperboard strengths. Therefore, we carried out a basic study on the surface modification of brewers grain and oil palm frond powders to improve the strengths of paperboard. Surface modification was performed using various types of cationic and oxidized starches. The streaming current and zeta-potential of the two non-lignocellulosic powders were measured and CLSM images were taken to assess the surface modification.
Water-in-oil emulsion (W/O) and oil-in-water emulsion (O/W) types biodegradable polymer emulsions prepared to PLA and PBS. The optimal mixing ratio of polymer : solvent : OA : TEA : water was found be 10 : 40 : 4 : 6 : 30(g) when preparing emulsions. Biodegradability was most retained after preparation of polymer emulsions. Particle size of PLA and PBS emulsions were 2-3 ${\mu}m$ and 3-4 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Molecular weight of PLA and PBS emulsions were 108,000 and 92,000, respectively. And molecular weight of PLA and PBS emulsions became slightly lower than those of pellets.
