  • In order to supplement insufficient nutrients of paper sludges, additional materials such as saw dust and rice husk were added during preparation of bed soils. Rice husk was more finely ground, compared to saw dust. The fine particles of the rice husk prevented their flow in a barrel of the expander. The mixed additives with paper sludges could be used to control the quantity of required nutrients for raising plants. That is, except for potassium and manganese, most of nutrients were decreased with adding the additives to paper sludge. The acidity of the paper sludges mixed with the saw dust or the rice husk was a little decreased with the increased amount of the additives. Differently from the bulk density of the paper sludges, the moisture content and the water absorption rate of the paper sludges were incremented with increasing the additives.

  • The function of the moisture-proof paper is to prevent moisture from adsorbing into the packed goods. Water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper should be less than 100g/$m^2$.24hr and the optimum rate would be less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. The purpose of this paper was to make moisture-proof paper using the mixture of SB latex and wax emulsion which was recyclable and environmentally friendly. Water vapor transmission rate showed less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr in mixture ratio of 85:15, 87:13, 90:10. Especially the mixture ratio of 87:13 showed the most favorable water-vapor transmission rate. However, the moisture-proof layer was destroyed slightly by folding in packing. It has been observed that there was no close relationship between water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper and grammage of the base paper, but the density of base paper had influenced on water vapor transmission rate. It was also observed that the moisture-proof paper could be recycled. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of the pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particles which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping were measured to examine the fiber bonding, and no significant difference in physical properties was observed.

  • Objectives: To comparatively evaluate the efficacy of photo-activated disinfection (PAD), calcium hydroxide (CH) and their combination on the treatment outcome of indirect pulp treatment (IPT). Materials and Methods: Institutional ethical clearance and informed consent of the patients were taken. The study was also registered with clinical registry of India. Sixty permanent molars exhibiting deep occlusal carious lesion in patients with the age range of 18 - 22 yr were included. Clinical and radiographic evaluation and set inclusion and exclusion criteria's were followed. Gross caries excavation was accomplished. In group I (n = 20) PAD was applied for sixty seconds. In group II (n = 20), CH was applied to the remaining carious dentin, while in group III (n = 20), PAD application was followed by CH placement. The teeth were permanently restored. They were clinically and radiographically followed-up at 45 day, 6 mon and 12 mon. Relative density of the remaining affected dentin was measured by 'Radiovisiography (RVG) densitometric' analysis. Results: Successful outcome with an increase in radiographic grey values were observed in all three groups. However, on inter-group comparison, this change was not significant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: PAD and CH both have equal disinfection efficacy in the treatment of deep carious dentin. PAD alone is as effective for treatment of deep carious lesion as calcium hydroxide and hence can be used as an alternative to CH. They can be used independently in IPT, since combining both does not offer any additional therapeutic benefits.

  • Leaching of copper and silver from mobile phone PCBs(printed circuit boards) with nitric acid was performed to investigate the effects of nitric acid concentrations, leaching temperatures, agitation speeds, and pulp densities on the leaching behaviors of Cu and Ag. The leaching rate considerably increased with increasing acid concentration and temperature. The leaching ratios of Cu and Ag were found to be 96.4% and 96.5%, respectively, under the optimum condition; at $80^{\circ}C$ with 2mol/L $HNO_3$ and 120g/L in pulp density within 39minutes. The kinetic parameters were determined based on the shrinking core model with reaction control corresponding to small particles. The activation energies for the leaching of copper and silver were found to be 45.5kJ/mol and 60.5kJ/mol at $35{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ with 2mol/L $HNO_3$, respectively.

  • The raw oriental lacquer produced in China was used in this study. This lacquer was diluted with ethanol and terpene in different solvent ratios. The diluted lacquer in the solvents had two layers. The upper layer was solvent soluble and the lower contained precipitates. Hanji was treated with the solvent solubles and the mixture containing precipitates, and then properties of the Hanji were evaluated. The average weight, thickness, and density of Hanji treated with oriental lacquer tended to gradually be decreased as the lower concentration of lacquer was used and as the solvent soluble was treated. Tensile strength of the treated Hanji decreased when the diluted lacquer was used and Hanji treated with terpene dilution at the ratio of lacquer to solvent of 1:5 (v/v) showed higher tensile strength than ones treated with ethanol dilution. The folding endurance decreased as the less concentrated lacquer was used and the highest value was obtained when 1:40 (v/v) of lacquer to solvent ratio in both ethanol and terpene mixture. Absorption ratio was higher in the Hanji treated with ethanol mixture, treated with the lacquer in lower concentration, and treated with ethanol mixture. Hanji treated with ethanol dilution at 1:20 (v/v) and the lower ratio of lacquer to solvent showed a hydrophobic property. Amount of the bound dye materials tended to be decreasing as the concentration of lacquer became lower and it was higher in Hanji treated with ethanol mixture than with terpene mixture.

  • The lithographic process depends on a satisfactory ink-in-water emulsion being formed during printing and the speed of wet presses makes the choice of fountain solution vitally important as the ink and fount must react quickly to form a stable emulsion. Ink and water come into contact with each other on the rolls of the press and are forced together in the roll nips. The water is not soluble in the ink since it is slightly fat. Instead, an emulsion is formed, a heterogeneous mass consisting of small water drops mixed into the ink, if the water feed is too great. This emulsification can affect the properties of an off-set ink and negatively affect the printability. So we investigated the effects of the emulsification of phenol free heat-set ink and existing heat-set ink on printed quality, such as amount of ink transfer, printed density, print-through and uniformity. We used Duke emulsification tester for the emulsification of inks, and used IGT printability tester for printed quality. The printed quality were measured by densitometer and were evaluated by the image analysis system. Compared to conventional printing ink, phenol-free ink showed better results of the printability at the emulsification.

  • The new alkali pulping process combined with electron beam treatment was applied to utilize hemp bast tissues as a new valuable fibrous resource. Hemp bast tissues have some chemical properties with high lignin contents and holocellulose not to be defiberized by alkali pulping only, compared with the bast tissue of paper mulberry. To make up for the weakness of traditional alkali pulping process, electron beams were directly irradiated into the swelled bast tissue of hemp in NaOH solution and distilled water, and then facilitated the defiberization of hemp bast tissues. The papermaking from hemp bast fibers manufactured by the combination pulping process showed good apparent density, formation structure and air permeability, and had some mechanical properties with lower tensile, tear, burst strength and folding endurance. It is finally concluded that the combination pulping process with electron beam treatment could be suggested a new alternative for non-woody fibers.

  • The increase of OCC solid content after wet pressing will save drying energy greatly. We applied spacers, which used to increase draining rate and bulk in fiber furnishes, to increase the OCC solid contents. MDF fibers (fibers for making medium density fiberboard) and diatomaceous earth were used as spacers, and added 10% by weight to the OCC fiber furnish. Application of high wet pressing pressure to the mixed furnish of spacers and refined OCC did not deteriorate bulk and drainage rate, but their solid contents were increased to 0.5-1.5% without loss of compressive strength when compared to those of unrefined OCC, which is the furnish normally used for mill commercial practice. It is believed that the spacers caused the rate of solid content increase faster in the mixed furnish with OCC at high wet pressing pressure area than the unrefined OCC furnish did. Little amount of starch addition (0.5%) to the spacers helped to keep the strength properties.

  • To meet the ever increasing quality demand of coated papers and duplex boards, the local gloss variation and print unevenness must be avoid. To do this, surface roughening phenomenon which affects local gloss and print unevenness was investigated. In this study, the effect of roughness and densification of sheet obtained at various calendering conditions on surface roughening was examined. To evaluate the calendering effect properly we introduced a new value of roughening index by moisture for evaluation of surface roughening. Caliper and roughness of sheet decreased with increasing of calendering temperature and pressure, and the remarkable reduction of those properties occurred at the temperature around Tg. Roughening index increased when the amount of water increased and calendaring temperature and pressure increased. And as the sheet became denser by calendering, the roughening index increased to some extent. But roughening index by moisture is the lowest for sheet precalendered at higher temperature condition. When the surface of calendered sheet is rougher, there is more roughening of surface. The severe condition of calendering made the roughening index by moisture small.
