The Effect on the Hip Muscle Activation of the Fall Direction and Knee Position During a Fall

  • Background: A hip fracture may occur spontaneously prior to the hip impact, due to the muscle pulling force exceeding the strength of the femur. Objects: We conducted falling experiments with humans to measure the activity of the hip muscles, and to examine how this was affected by the fall type. Methods: Eighteen individuals fell and landed sideways on a mat, by mimicking video-captured real-life older adults' falls. Falling trials were acquired with three fall directions: forward, backward, or sideways, and with three knee positions at the time of hip impact, where the landing side knee was free of constraint, or contacted the mat or the contralateral knee. During falls, the activities of the iliopsoas (Ilio), gluteus medius (Gmed), gluteus maximus (Gmax) and adductor longus (ADDL) muscles were recorded. Outcome variables included the time to onset, activity at the time of hip impact, and timing of the peak activity with respect to the time of hip impact. Results: For Ilio, Gmed, Gmax, and ADDL, respectively, EMG onset averaged 292, 304, 350, and 248 ms after fall initiation. Timing of the peak activity averaged 106, 96, 84, and 180 ms prior to the hip impact, and activity at the time of hip impact averaged 72.3, 45.2, 64.3, and 63.4% of the peak activity. Furthermore, the outcome variables were associated with fall direction and/or knee position in all but the iliopsoas muscle. Conclusion: Our results provide insights on the hip muscle activation during a fall, which may help to understand the potential injury mechanism of the spontaneous hip fracture.

Development and feasibility test of sit-to-stand transfer assistive device

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to develop a sit-to-stand transfer assistive device, and to conduct a feasibility test. Design: A technical note. Methods and results: In this study, we developed a sit-to-stand transfer assistive device for the elderly and the disabled who have difficulty standing up independently from sitting positions. The sit-to-stand transfer assistive device allows the user to transfer the weight from a sitting position to a standing position while shifting the weight forward by grabbing and pulling a support stand. Ten healthy adults participated in the feasibility test of the device. Each participant used the developed sit-to-stand transfer assistive device and investigated supplementation through a brief interview. As a result of the feasibility test, the opinion was that the device could assist the sit-to-stand transfer to some extent. There were opinions that it needed a function to adjust the height of the knee protective plate in the sitting position according to the user's physical characteristics. Because of the inconvenience of operating the lock device for fixing the position and adjusting inclination, there was an opinion that the improvement for a locking device is needed. There were opinions that it would be better to reduce the size of the device due to its inconvenience of portability. Conclusion: In this study, we developed the sit-to-stand transfer assistive device for the elderly and the disabled who have difficulty standing up independently from sitting positions. In addition, it is considered that the upgrade of the device is necessary for the future since there are supplementary opinions on some points.

  • 급속하게 확산되어온 ICT 기술과 다양한 산업의 융합은 현대를 살아가는 개개인이 느끼지 못하는 사이에 기존 산업의 패러다임을 허물고 풍요로운 삶을 영위할 수 있도록 해준다. 이는 개인의 삶에 대한 영향뿐만이 아니고 사회와 국가의 수준과 경쟁력을 높여주는 원동력이 되고 있다. 현대 산업사회는 복잡성이 증대되고 있고 필요한 지식의 양은 날로 늘어나고 있으며, ICT 기술은 계속 진화하고 있다. 이에 따라 새로운 비즈니스 모델이 창출되고 있고 경쟁력 없는 기존의 사업은 자연 도태되며, 기존 산업의 변화 혹은 새로운 산업을 위한 생태계가 구축된다. 최근의 융합 환경에서 시도되는 신규 사업과 경쟁의 질서는 불확실성의 리스크에 노출되기가 쉽다. 이러한 변화는 기존 산업의 몰락을 촉진하거나 새로운 비즈니스 모델의 창출로 이어진다. 변화의 중심에는 디지털 전환(Digital Transformation)과 ICT 융합이 있다. 이러한 현상이 가져오는 사회와 산업의 변화를 분석하고 ICT 융합 산업 경쟁력 확보를 위한 발전방향, 전략 및 추진방안에 대하여 연구한다.

Gross motor dysfunction and balance impairments in children and adolescents with Down syndrome: a systematic review

  • Background: Individuals with Down syndrome present with several impairments such as hypotonia, ligament laxity, decreased muscle strength, insufficient muscular cocontraction, inadequate postural control, and disturbed proprioception. These factors are responsible for the developmental challenges faced by children with Down syndrome. These individuals also present with balance dysfunctions. Purpose: This systematic review aims to describe the motor dysfunction and balance impairments in children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Methods: We searched the Scopus, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Wiley, and EBSCO databases for observational studies evaluating the motor abilities and balance performance in individuals with Down syndrome. The review was registered on PROSPERO. Results: A total of 1,096 articles were retrieved; after careful screening and scrutinizing against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were included in the review. Overall, the children and adolescents with Down syndrome showed delays and dysfunction in performing various activities such as sitting, pulling to stand, standing, and walking. They also presented with compensatory mechanisms to maintain their equilibrium in static and dynamic activities. Conclusion: The motor development of children with Down syndrome is significantly delayed due to structural differences in the brain. These individuals have inefficient compensatory strategies like increasing step width, increasing frequency of mediolateral center of pressure displacement, decreasing anteroposterior displacement, increasing trunk stiffness, and increasing posterior trunk displacement to maintain equilibrium. Down syndrome presents with interindividual variations; therefore, a thorough evaluation is required before a structured intervention is developed to improve motor and balance dysfunction.

L-Menthol, Salicylic acid, Dexpanthenol을 함유한 헤어 앰플이 두피 및 모발에 미치는 영향 (Effects of hair ampoules containing L-Menthol, Salicylic acid, and Dexpanthenol on scalp and hair)

  • 본 연구에서는 낮은 연령층과 여성에게도 확대되고 있는 탈모와 문제성 두피에 대한 기초 연구자료를 제공하고자, 문제성 두피를 가진 20대 여성을 대상으로 L-Menthol, Salicylic acid, Dexpanthenol이 함유되어 있는 B사의 헤어 앰플을 매일 사용하였을 때, 4주 후 두피 및 모발에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구 결과, L-Menthol, Salicylic acid, Dexpanthenol이 함유되어 있는 B사의 앰플을 사용하였을 때 연구 대상자들의 두피 상태가 실험 전에 비하여 염증 완화, 두피 열 및 홍반 감소, 가려움증과 모발 빠짐 감소, 청결해진 모공 상태, 모발 굵기 증가 등 개선 효과를 보였으며, 연구 대상자들의 두피 자가진단을 통해 실험 전과 후의 두피 만족도, 두피 생기와 탄력, 열 발생도, 세정 후 두피 당김, 가려움증에 대한 개선 효과가 나타났음이 확인되었다. 이와같은 연구 결과를 통하여 L-Menthol, Salicylic acid, Dexpanthenol이 함유된 제품이 문제성 두피 및 모발 개선에 도움이 될 것으로 사료되어 진다.

Anaerobic Direct Seeder Engineering Component of the Rice Anaerobic Seeding Technology

  • Direct-seeded rice can have comparable yield with transplanted rice if its inherent problems can be solved. It is a labor-saving technology and can significantly reduce production cost because seedling nursery , pulling , and transplanting are omitted. Turnaround time between cropping is reduced hence the possibility of a third annual crop. But direct-seeded rice is very vulnerable to pest attack (by birds, rats, and golden snails), desiccation, weed infestation, and prone to lodging resulting to unstable crop establishment and inconsistent yield. These problems can be solved by anaerobic seeding (sowing pre-germinated seeds under the soil). It requires precise seed placement into the soil to optimize its benefits. We developed a four-row anaerobic direct seeder (US $ 200 commercial price) for this purpose . It consist of a structural framework mounted with a drum -hopper metering device, flotation type drivewheels, spring-loaded and adjustable furrow closers, and furrow open rs, and a plastic rainguard. It can sow in line pre-germinated seeds into the soil thus permitting the use of mechanical weeders for a chemical-free weed control. Its performance was comparable with the Japanese two-row anaerobic seeder (costing US$400) in terms of seed placement and crop establishment. It was tested with five cultivars. Seeding rate varied from 38 kg/ha to 80kg/ha. Crop establishment ranged from 64 to 99 percent while grain yield varied from 3.0 t/ha to 5.4t/ha. A six-row anaerobic seeder was also developed and adapted to a powertiller for increased capacity , field efficiency , and easier operation. The anaerobic seeder is useful to farmers shifting to direct seeding to reduce rice production cost and to researchers conducting agronomic studies in direct-seeded rice. Experimental investigation of the pullout behavior of fiber concrete with inclination steel fibers

  • Cement-based matrixes have low tensile strength and negligible ductility. Adding fibres to these matrixes will improve their mechanical properties and make these composites suitable for structural applications. Post-cracking tensile strength of steel fibers-reinforced cementitious composite materials is directly related to the number of transverse fibers passing through the crack width and the pulling-out behavior of each of the fibers. Therefore, the exact recognition of the pullout behavior of single fibers is necessary to understand the uniaxial tensile and bending behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. In this paper, an experimental study has been carried out on the pullout behavior of 3D (steel fibers with totally two hooks at both ends), 4D (steel fibers with a total of four hooks at both ends), and 5D (steel fibers with totally six hooks at both ends) in which the fibers have been located either perpendicular to the crack width or in an inclined manner. The pullout behavior of the mentioned steel fibers at an inclination angle of 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 degrees and with embedded lengths of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 millimetres is studied in order to explore the simultaneous effect of the inclination angle of the fibers relative to the alongside loading and the embedded length of fibers on the pullout response in each case, including the maximal pullout force, the slip of the maximum point of pullout force, pullout energy, fiber rupture, and concrete matrix spalling. The results showed that the maximum pullout energy in 3D, 4D, and 5D steel fibers with different embedded lengths occurs at 0 to 30° inclination angles. In 5D fibers, maximum pullout energy occurs at a 30° angle with a 25 mm embedded length.

탄성력 기반 안전벨트 프리텐셔너 설계 (Design of Seat Belt Pretensioner driven by Elastic Force)

  • 차량 충돌 시 벨트를 잡아당겨 탑승자의 상해 가능성을 최소화하기 위한 안전장치인 프리텐셔너는 화약 폭발 방식으로 구동되므로 화재나 파편이 튀는 2차 사고의 위험이 있으며 사고 발생 후 프리텐셔너 내부의 가스 발생기 뿐만 아니라 매니폴더를 포함한 연결 부품 모두를 교체해야 하는 단점이 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 안전하고 반영구적으로 사용이 가능한 탄성력 기반 프리텐셔너를 제안한다. 기존 프리텐셔너의 작동 원리를 열역학적/동역학적 관점으로 분석한 후 프리텐셔너 전개를 위해 필요한 가스 폭발에너지를 탄성에너지로 변환하였다. 또한 비감쇠 진동해석을 통해 프리텐셔너 작동시간을 확인하였으며 폭발 압력과 전개 시간 조건을 모두 만족하는 스프링 강성을 선정하였다. 스프링 부착 위치에 따른 차량 내부 설치 규격을 고려하여 코일 스프링 형상 및 고정부를 설계하였으며 제작을 통해 탄성력 기반 프리텐셔너의 성능 검증을 수행하였다.

Hip Muscle Strength and Ratio Differences in Delivery Workers With and Without Iliotibial Band Syndrome

  • Background: Delivery workers repeatedly get in and out of trucks and walk or run to deliver packages during work. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a well-known non-traumatic overuse injury of the lateral side of the knee caused by frequent knee flexion and extension. Hip muscle strength is among the factors that prevent lower extremity injuries. Although many studies have examined the relationship between ITBS and hip muscle strengths, there was no study comparing hip muscle strength and ratio between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Objects: This study aimed to compare hip muscle strength and hip internal/external rotator and adductor/abductor strength ratios between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Methods: Fourteen delivery workers with ITBS matched inclusion criteria in the present study among 20 participants. Because total sample size was required 28 subjects by G*power program (ver. 3.1.9.4; University of Trier), 14 delivery workers without ITBS were recruited. Hip muscle strengths were measured in a side-lying position using a Smart KEMA pulling sensor (KOREATECH Co. Ltd.). An independent t-test was used to compare hip muscle strengths and hip internal/external rotator and hip adductor/abductor strength ratios between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Results: The adductor/abductor strength ratio was significantly greater in delivery workers without ITBS than in those with ITBS (p < 0.05). The strengths of the hip abductor, hip adductor, hip internal rotator, hip external rotator, and the ratio of internal/external rotator strengths were not significantly different between the delivery workers with and without ITBS (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study's findings showed that delivery workers with ITBS had significantly lesser adductor/abductor strength ratio, while the strengths of the hip abductor and adductor muscles did not differ significantly. These results suggest that adductor/abductor strength ratio should be considered when evaluating and treating ITBS in delivery workers.

구개인두부전증 환자의 한국어 음성 코퍼스 구축 방안 연구 (Research on Construction of the Korean Speech Corpus in Patient with Velopharyngeal Insufficiency)

  • Background and Objectives We aimed to develop a Korean version of the velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) speech corpus system. Subjects and Method After developing a 3-channel simultaneous speech recording device capable of recording nasal/oral and normal compound speech separately, voice data were collected from VPI patients aged more than 10 years with/without the history of operation or prior speech therapy. This was compared to a control group for which VPI was simulated by using a french-3 nelaton tube inserted via both nostril through nasopharynx and pulling the soft palate anteriorly in varying degrees. The study consisted of three transcriptors: a speech therapist transcribed the voice file into text, a second transcriptor graded speech intelligibility and severity and the third tagged the types and onset times of misarticulation. The database were composed of three main tables regarding (1) speaker's demographics, (2) condition of the recording system and (3) transcripts. All of these were interfaced with the Praat voice analysis program, which enables the user to extract exact transcribed phrases for analysis. Results In the simulated VPI group, the higher the severity of VPI, the higher the nasalance score was obtained. In addition, we could verify the vocal energy that characterizes hypernasality and compensation in nasal/oral and compound sounds spoken by VPI patients as opposed to that characgerizes the normal control group. Conclusion With the Korean version of VPI speech corpus system, patients' common difficulties and speech tendencies in articulation can be objectively evaluated. Comparing these data with those of the normal voice, mispronunciation and dysarticulation of patients with VPI can be corrected.
