  • Korea's traffic congestion costs including other social costs due to accidents, environmental pollution and increased demand is increasing every year. In this regard, direction of government policy was geared toward suppression of vehicle demand and activation of public transportation, which is determined to be the best solution with limited supply of infrastructure such as road facilities. This study aims to implement public transport bus-only Head-Up Display (hereafter called HUD) technology which displays public transport information required for a bus driver on the front glass of a bus. The public transport bus-only HUD not only prevents gaze dispersion of bus drivers but also helps to reduce the heavy workload of bus drivers by providing information required for driving. Ultimately, the final research purpose is a reduction of bus traffic accidents by 50% caused by negligence in keeping eyes forward or sideways.

  • Recently, many people enjoy movies and music content through their smart devices for using public transportation like as bus or subway. However, because their concentration is aimed at content on their smart devices, passengers sometimes forget to disembark and miss their destination stations. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a destination notification system for disembarking public transport using high frequencies based on the smart devices. We tested 1,000 times real-time destination notification to performance evaluate of the proposed application and service system. According to the test results, the proposed system showed 99.4% and 99.6% accuracy and we confirmed that it could be very useful. As such, the proposed system could be a useful technology for notifying smart device users when to get off public transport, capable of global commercialization.

  • Recognition for the importance and roles of public transportation is increasing because of traffic problems in many cities. In spite of this paradigm change, previous researches related with public transportation trip assignment have limits in some aspects. Especially, in case of multimodal public transportation networks, many characters should be considered such as transfers. operational time schedules, waiting time and travel cost. After metropolitan integrated transfer discount system was carried out, transfer trips are increasing among traffic modes and this takes the variation of users' route choices. Moreover, the advent of high-technology public transportation card called smart card, public transportation users' travel information can be recorded automatically and this gives many researchers new analytical methodology for multimodal public transportation networks. In this paper, it is suggested that the methodology for establishment of brand new multimodal public transportation networks based on computer programming methods using transportation card data. First, we propose the building method of integrated transportation networks based on bus and urban railroad stations in order to make full use of travel information from transportation card data. Second, it is offered how to connect the broken transfer links by computer-based programming techniques. This is very helpful to solve the transfer problems that existing transportation networks have. Lastly, we give the methodology for users' paths finding and network establishment among multi-modes in multimodal public transportation networks. By using proposed methodology in this research, it becomes easy to build multimodal public transportation networks with existing bus and urban railroad station coordinates. Also, without extra works including transfer links connection, it is possible to make large-scaled multimodal public transportation networks. In the end, this study can contribute to solve users' paths finding problem among multi-modes which is regarded as an unsolved issue in existing transportation networks.

  • As the applied fields of GIS are expanded to the transportation, developing internet-based applications for transportation information is getting attention increasingly. Most applications developed so far are primarily focused on guidance systems for owner-driven cars. Although some recent ones are devoted to public transportation systems, they show limitations in dealing with the following aspects: (i) people may change transportation means not only within the same type but also among different modes such as between buses and subways, and (ii) the system should take into account the time taken in transfer from one mode to the other. This study suggest the framework for developing a public transportation guidance system that generates optimized paths in the transportation network of mixed means including buses, subways and other modes. For this study, the Genetic Algorithms are used to find the best routes that take into account transfer time and other service-time constraints.

  • Objective: This study is aimed at investigating indoor air quality on public transportation (subway, train, and bus) according to changes in season and time. Methods: We evaluated TVOC and HCHO on public transportation based on the un-controlled parameters of the Ministry of Environment. We also measured temperature and humidity since they affect the concentration of TVOC and HCHO. For public transportation classification, subway lines were classified into Lines 1 to 4. Additionally, trains were classified as ITX and KTX. Results: When comparing summer and winter on public transportation, the concentrations of TVOC and HCHO did not show any particular tendency. However, the concentrations of TVOC and HCHO during traffic congestion was higher than levels during times of non-congestion on most public transportation. In summer and winter, the measurement results for temperature and humidity showed a normal range, so temperature and humidity did not affect the concentrations of TVOC and HCHO. In the case of TVOC, TVOC concentrations on new trains were found to be relatively higher than on older ones, but there was no statistically correlation. Conclusions: A survey was conducted on the indoor air quality on public transportation. This study also analyzed data based on TVOC and HCHO for designing policies and managing indoor air quality.

  • COVID-19 has caused the dramatic reduction of public transportation demand in Busan Metropolitan City, that is, daily public transportation trips in 2020 dropped by approximately 920,000 trips from 2019 based on the public transportation card data. This study investigated the underlying factors affecting the public transportation demand discrepancy between before and after COVID-19 at the primary administration unit(i.e., Eup, Myeon, Dong) level with Ordered Logistic Regression model. Finding of this study is as follows. The primary administration units characterized with high ratio of welfare recipients, industrial area, and day boarders were heavily dependent on public transit, indicating little change in public transportation demand. On the other hands, the primary administration units which have high ratio of urban rail transit uses experienced significant reduction of public transportation demand. In conclusion, transportation policies taken under emergent situation such as COVID-19 need to take into account the region-based characteristics rather than unilateral ones.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm a structural relationship on factors affecting ratio of public transportation spending to a car-owning household's total transportation expenditure. For this purpose, informations of household's attributes and activities were gathered using the 13th Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), and information of land-use and transportation conditions on their residential locations was collected and processed. A structural equation model (SEM) on determinants affecting ratio of public transportation expenditure was constructed, based on an execution result of factor analysis using the analyzing database. The latent variables were derived as land-use/transportation characteristic, household's attribute and household's activity. In the analyzing result of the SEM, the entire latent variables were significant. And, the first two latent variables had positive influences, and the last latent variable had a negative impact. To promote public transportation use of the car-owning households, this study suggests that the policies such as enhancement of convenience in public transportation use for the household's activities and improvement of the land-use/transport conditions are required.
