The Impact of Psychosocial Health and Self-nurturance on Graduate Nurse Experience (신규간호사의 사회심리적 건강과 자기 돌봄이 실무 적응 어려움에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance on the experience of new graduate nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. The participants in this study were 149 nurses who had less than 12 months of nursing experience and were working at one of 4 general hospitals. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire from Nov. 2012 to Oct. 2014. Results: The total mean score for Psychosocial health was $3.07{\pm}0.60$, Self-nurturance, $3.38{\pm}0.44$, and graduate nurse experience, $2.59{\pm}0.27$. The effect of Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance predicted 23% of variance in graduate nurse experience. Conclusion: These results indicate that Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance have a positive relationship to graduate nurse experience. Therefore, further studies including approaches that support Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance are recommended to help in the adaptation of newly graduated nurses to clinical settings.

Effects of Abuse Experiences on Psychological and Social Adaptation of Out-of-House Protection Service Youth : Focused on the Mediation Effect of Self-Adjusting Capacity (학대경험이 가정 외 보호 서비스 청소년의 심리사회적 적응에 미치는 영향 : 자기조절능력의 매개효과 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the abuse experience of adolescents in out-of-home care on their psychosocial adjustment and the mediating effects of self-regulation skills. A survey was conducted on the adolescents who resided in the city of Busan and received out-of-home care service. The findings of the study were as follows: First, abuse experience was found to have exerted a negative influence on self-regulation skills. Second, abuse experience was found to have exerted a negative influence on psychosocial adjustment. Third, self-regulation skills were found to have exercised a positive influence on psychosocial adjustment. Fourth, self-regulation skills were found to have had a mediating effect on the relationship between abuse experience and psychosocial adjustment. The findings of this study were of significance in that neglect and emotional abuse should be prevented to promote the psychosocial adjustment of teenagers with abuse experience who are in out-of-home care, and in that the importance of the intervention of counseling programs which could foster the self-regulation skills of adolescents was urged.

Relationship between Psychosocial Factors and Symptom Experience in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: Over a Six-month follow-up Period (심장질환자의 심리사회적 요인 및 증상 경험간의 관계 : 6개월 추적조사)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between psychosocial factors and symptom experience of patients with cardiovascular disease over a 6-month follow-up period. Method: Baseline data for each of the 138 patients were collected. Eighteen patients were dropped for a final total of 120 patients in the present study. To monitor patients' symptom experience after discharge, each patient was interviewed by telephone, and interviewed directly with a questionnaire at each clinic visit. Results: Mean scores for hostility, anger, anxiety, and depression were 51.63, 22.87, 48.95, and 41.21, respectively. Mean scores for the level of symptom experience at discharge, 3 months and 6 months after discharge were 32.83, 24.79, and 26.70, respectively. There were significant differences in the level of hostility by gender, BMI, job, and monthly income. Also the differences in the level of anxiety and depression were statistically significant according to gender and existence of spouse. In the regression analysis, depression was identified as the significant factor associated with symptom experience at discharge, 3 months, and 6 months after discharge. Conclusion: This study presented baseline data to elucidate whether psychosocial factors were associated with the progression of cardiovascular diseases. Accordingly, it suggests that nurses need to take into consideration psychosocial factor as well as physiological factor in symptom management for patients with cardiovascular disease.

A Structural Model for Psychosocial Adjustment in Patients with Early Breast Cancer (초기 유방암 환자의 심리사회적 적응 구조모형)

  • Purpose: This study was done to propose a structural model to explain and predict psychosocial adjustment in patients with early breast cancer and to test the model. The model was based on the Stress-Coping Model of Lazarus and Folkman (1984). Methods: Data were collected from February 18 to March 18, 2009. For data analysis, 198 data sets were analyzed using SPSS/WIN12 and AMOS 7.0 version. Results: Social support, uncertainty, symptom experience, and coping had statistically significant direct, indirect and total effects on psychosocial adjustment, and optimism had significant indirect and total effects on psychosocial adjustment. These variables explained 57% of total variance of the psychosocial adjustment in patients with early breast cancer. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate a need to enhance psychosocial adjustment of patients with early breast cancer by providing detailed structured information and various symptom alleviation programs to reduce perceived stresses such as uncertainty and symptom experience. They also suggest the need to establish support systems through participation of medical personnel and families in such programs, and to apply interventions strengthening coping methods to give the patients positive and optimistic beliefs.

  • Bullying behavior problems among middle school students have been increasing and being severe social problem. Therefore, on the basis of ecosystematic perspective, this study proposed the psychosocial factors that have various subsystems, such as individual level, family level, school level. Purposes of this study are to grasp the actual conditions of bulling and to examine psychosocial factors affecting bullying behavior of middle school students. For this study, surveyed were those 354 students who indicated they experienced bullying. The findings are as follows: Firstly, 49.2% of surveyed youth has the bullying offending experience. In detail, 26.7% of the bullies is estrangement from relations, 41.9% is verbal teasing, 18.2% is physical teasing. Secondly, the most important psychosocial factors to influence bullying behavior has been found the factors from the school. In the next place, from the individual. The prior factors that have relative influencing power on the bullying behavior are in order as follows- experience as victims of bullying and witness to bullying, aggression, peer group's exposure to delinquency, emotional unrest among sub-type borderline features, self-esteem, peer aggregation, a marital discord.

A Study of Psychosocial distress, Intention to Quit and Nursing Performance in General Ward Nurses (일반병동간호사의 사회심리적 스트레스, 이직의도와 간호 업무수행)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of psychosocial distress, intention to quit and nursing performance. Methods: The data were collected through structured questionnaires from 210 registered nurses in a general hospital. They were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS WIN program. Results: The results of the analysis showed that the mean of the psychosocial distress was $25.38{\pm}7.26$, intention to quit was $3.51{\pm}0.78$, and nursing performance was $3.67{\pm}0.46$. In the correlation analysis, the nursing performance had negative correlation with psychosocial distress(r=-.371, p=.000) and intention to quit(r=-.211, p=.002). There were statistically significant differences in nursing performance depending on age, marital status, position and work experience. The psychosocial distress and age explained 15.1% of nursing performance. Conclusion: This study showed psychosocial distress and intention to quit affects the nursing performance. Therefore, nursing executives and unit managers need to concern on the significance of the stress management programs so that these can be organizational support.

Part II. What drives Korean adults to seek orthodontic treatment: Factors contributing to orthodontic treatment decisions

  • Objective: This study aimed to identify the perceptions of orthodontic treatment among Korean adults and determine the factors that drive them to seek orthodontic treatment. Methods: A total of 2,321 adults aged 19-64 years were surveyed using an internet research system from a specialized research company. The participants were divided into the following groups based on their experience of and willingness to undergo orthodontic treatment: experience, acceptance, and non-acceptance groups. The characteristics of the participants were compared using analysis of variance with post-hoc analysis. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed in all three models with the non-acceptance group as a reference. Results: In terms of demographic characteristics, age, gender, marital status, and education had significant influences on orthodontic treatment decisions in adults in the experience and acceptance groups (p < 0.001). When all the factors were analyzed, age, marital status, past dental treatment experience, regular oral examinations, demand for orthodontic treatment, optimal treatment period, health insurance coverage, information on orthodontic treatments, perceptions regarding orthodontic treatment, and psychosocial impact of dental esthetics significantly influenced orthodontic treatment decisions in adults in the experience and acceptance groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: These findings suggest that various factors influence orthodontic treatment decisions in adults. Individuals who seek orthodontic treatment were found to undergo more regular dental treatment and oral examination than those who did not. They also had a better perception of orthodontic treatment and more negative values for the psychosocial impact of dental esthetics.

The Effect of Self-leadership on Nursing Students' Learning Flow during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Mediating Effects of Psychosocial Well-being (COVID-19 팬데믹 상황에서 온라인 수업을 경험한 간호대학생의 셀프리더십이 학습몰입에 미치는 영향: 사회심리적 건강의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the mediating effects of psychosocial well-being on the relationship between self-leadership and learning flow in nursing students. Methods: A total of 148 nursing students with online class experience participated in the study. The data were analyzed using the independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, PROCESS macro, and bootstrapping methods with SPSS Statistics 26.0. Results: The results showed that self-leadership, learning flow, and psychosocial well-being were significantly correlated, and self-leadership had a direct effect on learning flow. In other words, the higher the level of self-leadership, the higher the learning flow of nursing students. Psychosocial well-being was partially mediated by self-leadership and learning flow. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop and implement programs for self-leadership and psychosocial well-being enhancement as a strategy to enhance nursing students' learning flow.

Psychosocial aspects of childhood cancer survivors

  • The majority of childhood cancer survivors and their families will be psychologically healthy, but may desire and benefit from preventive care. A significant portion of the survivor population will be psychosocially distressed in various aspects by their harsh experience of long cancer treatment, and may warrant professional intervention and treatment. Pediatricians should be aware of the late psychological effects that can occur a year or 2 after treatment, possibly in many aspects of a survivor's life. Not only the cancer diagnosis, but also treatments such as chemotherapy, irradiation, and surgical intervention may exert different long-term effects on the psychosocial outcomes of survivors. Pediatricians need to be more concerned with maintaining and improving the psychological health of this growing number of childhood cancer survivors through long-term follow-up clinics, community support, or self-help groups. Research on all of the psychosocial aspects of childhood cancer survivors is important to recognize the reality and problems they face in Korea.

  • This study aimed to identify correlations among experience of violence, psychosocial stress and exhaustion in emergency medical technicians. In total, 393 emergency medical technicians were participated in the survey using an organized essay-type questionnaire. To determine psychosocial stress and exhaustion factors, a linear regression analysis was performed. In results, psychosocial stress factors were work units, the hope to keeping working in the present department, and verbal violence ($R^2=12.9%$), and the exhaustion factors were hope to keeping working at the present department, work units, and verbal violence ($R^2=14.5%$). In conclusion, it is suggested that strategies to deal with violence against subjects are educational programs to prevent violence and emotional support programs to decrease psychosocial stress, as well measures to improve the emergency rescue environment should be developed.
