  • This study is directed toward determining the number and characteristics of psychologically meaningful perceptual dimensions required for assessing the sound quality with respect to vehicle noises, and toward identifying the acoustical and/or psychoacoustical bases underlying the preference and similarity judgments. For the purpose of analyzing the paired comparison data produced by subjective ratings we used nonmetric multidimensional scaling(MDS). The perceptual dimensions based upon preference ratings could explain 76.3 % of the variance by maximum dB(A) and sharpness acum. The correlation between objective and subjective positions of the stimuli is $R^2$=0.97(F(1,13)=195.45, p < .01), corrected $R^2$=0.93. The less the intensity of the stimulus the more becomes the subjective Position would be over-estimated relative to the objective one. The same is valid for the opposite case. The perceptual dimensions based upon similarity judgments could be accounted for 47.8 % and 23.5% of the variance, each of which might be a match for the maximum dB(A) and the sharpness acum, respectively. The correlation between objective and subjective positions of the stimuli is $R^2$=0.94(F(1,13)=92.38, p < .01), corrected $R^2$=0.87. The more the intensity of the stimulus the more becomes the subjective position would be over-estimated relative to the objective one. The same is valid for the opposite case. In other words, it is likely that the larger the amount of two stimuli which to compare would be judged similar. So far it should be further clarified that whether the relationship between preference ratings and psychological distances nay be optimized through which psycho-physical models.

  • Financial products entail either gains or losses, and customers' psychological reaction to these gains and losses affect the selection of the financial products. This study explains the financial customers' behavior by introducing consumers' psychological variables such as regulatory focus and construal levels. According to the regulatory focus theory, there are two distinct motivational orientations called promotion focus and prevention focus. And, construal level theory proposes that people use more abstract and higher levels of construal to represent objects that are more distant on psychological distance. We have incorporated these two psychological variables into financial consumer behaviors. In the experiment 1, the results have showed that promotion focused customers prefer fund products to deposit products, whereas prevention focused customers have showed the opposite result. In the experiment 2, both regulatory focus and construal level were considered. Specifically, under the high level message, promotion focused customers have showed higher preference to fund products than the prevention focused customers, and no significant difference for the deposit products. On the contrary, given the low level message, prevention focused customers have showed higher preference to both fund and deposit products than the promotion focused customers. Therefore, it comes to the conclusion that it will be efficient for the financial companies to use high level messages for the promotion focused customers and low level messages for the prevention focused customers. Implications and limitations are discussed to establish more effective marketing strategies based on the results of this study.

  • This study aimed to research theoretical reviews of streetscape and to analysis the correlation between visual properties and preference of streetscape in Bukchon around Gahoe-dong which is a dense Hanok area. Therefore we analyzed a relation between visual quantities and preference intended Samcheong-dong 35 street, Gahoe-dong 31 street and Gahoe-dong 11 street the representative streetscape in Bukchon. Also we extracted common factors of images of the streetscape in Bukchon and figured out a relation between the visual image evaluation and the preference by regression analysis. The result of the analysis is as follows. First, it was the streetscape of Gahoe-dong 31 street which get more scores than any other streetscape in preference. And we figured out that the higher the ceiling and the visual quantities of planting the more preference. Second, streetscape in Bukchon was explained by 'aesthetics', 'amenity' and 'orderliness' in psychological view. And there was noticeable difference in aesthetics aspect between Gahoe-dong 31 street the highest preferred place and the Samcheong-dong 35 street the lowest preferred place. Third, as a result of regression analysis on preference and factor scores about psychological variables, we figured out that the factor which explains aesthetics effects most on the preference.

Some past research results proved the role of clothing in reducing the stresses. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the preference of the mini-style which is recently most fashionable styles is related to the psychological factors such as stress and body satisfaction. Measure Instrument were Nolmes and Masuda(1973)'s SRRS(Social Readjustment Rating Scal) Secord and Jourard(1953)' Body Cathexis Scale and mini-style preference scale by author Survey questionnaires were distributed to two hundred seventy adult women living in Seoul area during may 25 1992. through June 8. 1992. The age range of the subjects was from 30 to 49 The final number of subjects in-cluded in the statistical analysis was 244. The result and conclusions are as follows: 1. Significant difference was existed in mini-style preference between high and low body satisfaction groups. Mini-style was pre-ferred by high body satisfaction group than low body satisfaction group. 2, Significant difference was existed in mini-style preference between high and low stress groups. Mini-style was preferred by low stress group than high stress group. 3. Regarding demographic characteristics unmarried 2 year college graduates with low family income in their early 30's pref. mini-style. 4. There was a marginal interaction effect of demographic characteristics on the relation-ship between mini-style preference and body satisfaction. The higher preference and body satisfaction. The higher preference for mini-style was found for the higher body satis-faction group mostly with the age range of 35 to 39 married 4 year college graduates as drop-puts and mid less income group. 5. There was a marginal interaction effect of demographic variables on the relatonship be-tween mini style preference and stress level The higher preference for mini-style was re-lated to the low stress level group mostly with age group of 35 to 44 high school graduates or lower and highest income group regardless of their marital status. In sum mini-style seems to be preferred by women who feel relatively less stress and are more satisfied with their bodies thus psycho-logically stable.

  • With the development of cognitive science and environmental psychology, there have been growing researches and discussions on the relationship between the residential design preferences and personality types. MBTI personality types have been earning popular credibility. MBTI means Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological type. This study is based on Myers-Briggs theory to explain residential furnishing preference and explores the relationship between the four bi-polar personality types-Extroversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Perceiving and residential furnishing preference. These tests were conducted to two hundred and twelve adult residents who live in Seoul, Korea. These tests were analyzed several significances by Chi-Square with SPSS for windows software. (E) Extroverted residents prefer layouts for interaction with guests. (I) Introverted residents prefer centripetal layout around the bed. (S) Sensing residents prefer practical and functional layouts. (N) Intuitive residents prefer personal and conceiving layouts. (T) Thinking residents prefer for attribute of space. (F) Feeling residents for familiar conversation. (J) Judging residents prefer systematic and complete layouts. (P) Perceiving residents prefer adaptable and flexible layouts. In conclusion, personality types can have a determining role in preference of residential furnishing layouts. This study suggests that residential designers should take into account clients' personality types prefer effective designing and should provide a variety of alternatives reflecting clients' preferences. This will promote clients' pleasantness and satisfaction in dwelling at home.

  • A railway station forecourt is the first place in a city that may make an impression on first time visitors. Their first impression is influenced by the view of the city from the station. This study had two objectives: one was to clarify the evaluation structure of a station forecourt landscape and the other was to clarify the effect of landscape elements on public preference using multivariate analysis, and to discuss the problems of designing a station forecourt. In order to accomplish these objectives, psychological experiments based on photos of station forecourts were carried out, and the relationship between public preference and landscape elements was analyzed. A significant relationship between public preference and elements of a station forecourt landscape was quantitatively observed and several problems inherent to station forecourt design were identified.

  • The difference of sex has been an object of interest and argument in medical, psychological, social, and cognitive science fields. This study started from the question of to what extent does the difference of sex have effect on successful interior design. In strive of resolving this, an experimentation of preference in terms of cafe interior design was performed with methods of human sensibility ergonomics. As the result, the difference of sex in preference regarding calf interior design could be observed. Males have main interest in the intensity of luminance, i.e. the brightness, whereas females attach importance to both qualify of light and color. In addition, there is a tendency for males to see cafe as a public place while females recognize cafe as a place for entertainment. Taking the result of this study into consideration can lead to successful gender specific cafe interior design.

  • This paper examined the impact of psychological characteristics of consumers on household debt decisions. With the use of the Heckit models (the traditional approach to the selection problem) this study undertook an empirical study of the influence of a wide range of factors on financial decisions. This study used U.S. household-level data that offers detailed information on household debt, expectations about future income, expectations about future economic conditions, the amount of financial risk the respondent was willing to take, and the amount of time allotted for planning family savings and spending. This study showed that respondents with both substantial financial risk tolerance and positive expectations about future income were likely to have larger household debt showing that researchers and policy-makers need to consider consumer sentiment and preference measures in modeling behavior in credit markets. Additional results showed that household debt is significantly related to two key economic variables: income and net worth.
