Advanced Analysis of Connections to Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Columns using the 2005 AISC Specification (AISC 2005 코드를 활용한 콘크리트 충전 합성기둥의 해석과 평가)

  • Concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns have been widely used in moment resisting frame structures both in seismic zones. This paper discusses the design of such members based on the advanced methods introduced in the 2005 AISC Specification and the 2005 Seismic Provisions. This study focuses particularly on design following both linear and nonlinear methods utilizing equivalent static and dynamic loads for low-rise moment frames. The paper begins with an examination of the significance of pseudo-elastic design interaction equations and the plastic ductility demand ratios due to combined axial compressive force and bending moment in CFT members. Based on advanced computational simulations for a series of five-story composite moment frames, this paper then investigates both building performance and new techniques to evaluate building damage during a strong earthquake. It is shown that 2D equivalent static analyses can provide good design approximations to the force distributions in moment frames subjected to large inelastic lateral loads. Dynamic analyses utilizing strong ground motions generally produce higher strength ratios than those from equivalent static analyses, but on more localized basis. In addition, ductility ratios obtained from the nonlinear dynamic analysis are sufficient to detect which CFT columns undergo significant deformations.

  • In this study, a new RCSF (Reinforced Concrete Steel Frame) external connection method is proposed for seismic strengthening of medium-and low-rise reinforced concrete buildings. The RCSF method, proposed in this study, is capable of carrying out the seismic retrofitting construction while residents can live inside structures. The method is one of the strength design approach by retrofit which can easily increase the ultimate lateral load capacity of concrete buildings controlled by shear. The pseudo-dynamic test, designed using a existing school building in Korea, was carried out in order to verify the seismic strengthening effects of the proposed method in terms of the maximum load carrying capacity and ductility. Test results revealed that the proposed RCSF strengthening method installed in RC frame enhanced conspicuously the strength and displacement capacities, and the method can resist markedly under the large scaled earthquake intensity level.

  • This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the R/C bridge piers, which were seismically designed in accordance with the seismic provision of limited ductile behavior of Eurocode 8. Pseudo dynamic test for six(6) circular RC bridge piers has been carried out so at to investigate their seismic performance subjected to experted artificial earthquake motions. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Important test parameters are confinement steel ratio, input ground motion, etc. The seismic behavior of circular concrete piers under artificial ground motions has been evaluated through displacement ductility, energy analysis, capacity spectrum. It can be concluded that RC bridge piers designed in the seismic code of limited ductile behavior of Eurocode 8 have been determined to show good seismic performance even under expected artificial earthquakes in moderate seismicity region.

  • This paper considers the nonlinear direct spectrum method to estimate seismic performance of mixed building structures without iterative computations, given dynamic property $T_1$ from stiffness skeleton curve and nonlinear pseudo acceleration $A_{1y}$ and/or ductility ratio $\mu$ from response spectrum.   • The capacity of CFS piers has not been used to a practical design, because there is no guide of a seismic design for CFS piers. Therefore, the guide of a seismic design value is derived from tests of CFS piers in order to apply it to a practical seismic design. Steel piers and concrete-filled steel piers are tested with constant axial load using quasi-static cyclic lateral load to check ductile capacity and using the real Kobe ground motion of pseudo-dynamic test to verify seismic performance. The results prove that CFS piers have more satisfactory ductility and strength than steel piers and relatively large hysteretic damping in dynamic behaviors. The seismic performance of steel and CFS piers is quantified on the basis of the test results. These results are evaluated through comparison of both the response modification factor method by elastic response spectrum and the performance-based design method by capacity spectrum and demand spectrum using effective viscous damping. The response modification factor of CFS piers is presented to apply in seismic design on a basis of this evaluation for a seismic performance.

  • The resent earthquakes in worldwide have caused extensive damage to highway reinforced concrete bridge piers. It has been observed in the Korean Peninsula that the number of minor or low earthquake motions have increased year by year. Since the concern about the earthquake hazards is increased, the objective of this research is to evaluate the damage of reinforced concrete bridge piers subjected to probable earthquake motions. Experimental investigation was conducted to study the seismic performance of the full-scale specimens in size D=1.2m H=4.8m, which were constructed with different longitudinal lap splice and loading pattern, through the quasi-static test and the pseudo-dynamic test. It is thought that this result could contribute to establish the retrofit decision-making and disaster planning of reinforced concrete bridge piers in earthquake regions. And it could be also possible to quantify the damage of reinforced concrete bridge piers under cyclic loading

  • Following previous studies, the current paper describes the results of an experimental program concerning the repair of reinforced concrete columns by thixotropic pseudo plastic mortar, preformed to analyze and quantify the influence of initial construction damage to the behavior of the repaired element. Five columns (section scale 1:2) were designed according to the minimum requirements of reinforcement of ductility orientated codes' design with variables the percentages of initial construction damages. All were tested in axial compression with repeated cycles up to failure. For comparison reasons, another one of the same characteristics, yet healthy, was constructed and tested as a reference specimen. A numerical study (Finite Element Analysis) was conducted for further investigation of the behavior of the thixotropic mortar as repair material. The results indicate that: a) surpassing a specific amount of damage, columns even suitably repaired present lower strain capacity, b) finite element analysis present the same way of deboning of the repaired material taking into consideration the buckling of the reinforcement bars.
