  • Quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for a cognitive mesh network (CMN) with heterogeneous services has become a challenging area of research in recent days. Considering both real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) traffic in a multihop CMN, [1] studied cross-layer resource management, including joint access control, route selection, and resource allocation. Due to the complexity of the formulated resource allocation problems, which are mixed-integer non-linear programming, a low-complexity yet efficient algorithm was proposed there to approximately solve the formulated optimization problems. In contrast, in this work, we present an application of genetic algorithm (GA) to re-address the hard resource allocation problems studied in [1]. Novel initialization, selection, crossover, and mutation operations are designed such that solutions with enough randomness can be generated and converge with as less number of attempts as possible, thus improving the efficiency of the algorithm effectively. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the newly proposed GA-based algorithm. Furthermore, by comparing the performance of the newly proposed algorithm with the one proposed in [1], more insights have been obtained in terms of the tradeoff among QoS provisioning for RT traffic, throughput maximization for NRT traffic, and time complexity of an algorithm for resource allocation in a multihop network such as CMN.

  • This paper proposes a high performance QoS (Quality of Service) traffic transmission scheme to provide real-time multimedia services in wireless networks. This scheme is based on both a traffic estimation of the mean rate and a header compression method by dividing this network model into two parts, core RTP/UDP/IP network and wireless access parts, using the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. The improvement achieved by the scheme means that it can be designed to include a means of provisioning the high performance QoS strategy according to the requirements of each particular traffic flow by adapting the header compression for real-time multimedia data. A performance evaluation was carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed traffic transmission scheme.

  • In this paper, 15 South Korean telecommunications service failure cases were analyzed. Through the in-depth case study, 8 factors were found to be the major causes contributing to the telecommunications service failure. They were (1) ineffective marketing, (2) poor demand forecasting due to misjudgment of customer preference, (3) failure to satisfy technical specifications, (4) loss of cost advantage due to the price cut of competing services or new entry with lower price, (5) loss of utility advantage due to the increased utility of competing services or new entry with higher utility (6) decrease of market attractiveness due to change of customer preference, (7) impact of government policy, and (8) insufficient or low quality of contents. Additional analysis was done to derive managerial implications to the new telecommunications service development strategy. The findings from the paper will provide valuable Insight to the successful Implementation of new service development and service provisioning processes.

  • In this work, we propose an analytic framework for dimensioning the link capacity of broadband access networks which provide universal broadband access services to a diverse kind of customers such as patient and impatient customers. The proposed framework takes into account the flow-level quality of service (QoS) of a connection as well as the packet-level QoS, via which a simple and systematic provisioning and operation of the network are provided. To that purpose, we first discuss the necessity of flow-aware network dimensioning by reviewing the networking technologies of the current and future access network. Next, we propose an analytic model for dimensioning the link capacity for an access node of broadband convergence networks which takes into account both the flow and packet level QoS requirements. By carrying out extensive numerical experiment for the proposed model assuming typical parameters that represent real network environment, the validity of the proposed method is assessed.

  • Adaptive recommendation systems have been developed with big data processing as a system that provides services tailored to users based on user information and usage patterns. Deep learning can be used in these adaptive recommendation systems to handle big data, providing more efficient user-friendly recommendation services. In this paper, we propose a system that uses deep learning to categorize and recommend tourism types to suit the user's personality. The system was divided into three layers according to its core role to increase efficiency and facilitate maintenance. Each layer consists of the Service Provisioning Layer that real users encounter, the Recommendation Service Layer, which provides recommended services based on user information entered, and the Adaptive Definition Layer, which learns the types of tourism suitable for personality types. The proposed system is highly scalable because it provides services using deep learning, and the adaptive recommendation system connects the user's personality type and tourism type to deliver the data to the user in a flexible manner.

  • Ubiquitous Computing has introduced one of the most innovative international research contributions on the design and evaluation of new generations of handheld and mobile information appliances. New devices are being invented and existing devices are being improved with smaller size and increased mobility. These changes of computing paradigm are enabling the enterprises' legacy services to be automated and value-added all the more. We suggest a service framework and algorithms of provisioning healthcare services in a ubiquitous computing environment. We construct domain ontology that is related to diabetes and minimum common sense ontology for service composition. The results of this research enable integration and interconnection of devices, applications, and functions of enterprises within the healthcare services.

  • Ubiquitous Healthcare (u-Healthcare) is the intelligent delivery of healthcare services to users anytime and anywhere. To provide robust healthcare services, recognition of patient daily life activities is required. Context information in combination with user real-time daily life activities can help in the provision of more personalized services, service suggestions, and changes in system behavior based on user profile for better healthcare services. In this paper, we focus on the intelligent manipulation of activities using the Context-aware Activity Manipulation Engine (CAME) core of the Human Activity Recognition Engine (HARE). The activities are recognized using video-based, wearable sensor-based, and location-based activity recognition engines. An ontology-based activity fusion with subject profile information for personalized system response is achieved. CAME receives real-time low level activities and infers higher level activities, situation analysis, personalized service suggestions, and makes appropriate decisions. A two-phase filtering technique is applied for intelligent processing of information (represented in ontology) and making appropriate decisions based on rules (incorporating expert knowledge). The experimental results for intelligent processing of activity information showed relatively better accuracy. Moreover, CAME is extended with activity filters and T-Box inference that resulted in better accuracy and response time in comparison to initial results of CAME.

  • In the last couple of years service management has gained more and more momentum in the research community. Nowadays, as complexity of IT-services is increasing, these services are usually composed of interdependent, layered services hosted by various providers. Therefore, a strong cooperation of providers involved in service provisioning is needed, especially regarding their management processes and systems. One important step is to establish a common understanding about service-related terms in order to be able to specify service functionality and the resulting management tasks. Additionally, means to analyze and identify the necessary actors and the corresponding inter- and intra-organizational relationships are needed. This paper presents an extended version of the MNM service model which provides a generic model defining commonly needed service-related terms, concepts and structuring rules in a general and unambiguous way. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of the MNM service model by modeling a riser help desk service based on a concrete scenario. The experience gained from modeling is used to discuss the benefits of service modeling in general.
