  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-impingement jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. To study the flow characteristics especially in the jet flow region, three different distributions of mass flow rate at 5-jet exits were assumed. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) A periodical fully developed flow was observed from the third protrusion. This was also observed from previous experimentally by Whidden at al. The Nessult number at the protrusion surface increased mildly as going downstream. 2) The low Reynolds number turbulence model of Launder and Sharma was found to be adequate for the prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of two dimensional multi-jet configuration. 3) The Nusselt number at the protrusion surface was nearly proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number.

  • A mucocele is a cystic dilatation of the vermiform appendix that contains mucous material. The symptoms associated with it are not specific and the diagnosis is seldom made prior to surgery. The reported prevalence in appendectomy specimens procured during surgery is 0.2-0.3%. Recently, we experienced a case of patient with appendiceal mucocele detected by colonoscopic examination. This case did not show typical colonoscopic features of a mucocele, demonstrating protrusion of mucin, in the absence of a smooth mound with normal overlying mucosa surrounding the appendiceal orifice. The case involved a 64-year-old woman who underwent a colonoscopy. An abdominopelvic computed tomography scan suggested a normal appendix. Subsequently, we performed an appendectomy. The pathologic finding was a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis was performed for the natural convection heat transfer in a vertical channel which was consisted of two finite-thickness vertical walls with heat source. The ratio of the thermal conductivity of wall to air played an important role in the analysis. The case for which one side wall has protrusion resistances was also examined. The governing equations for the system was discretized by control volume formulation and solved by SIMPLE method. As the result of this study, it was found that the uniform heat flux boundary condition could be applied when the conductivity ratio was below approximately 50 and the uniform temperature boundary condition could be used when the conductivity rat io was over approximately 15,000. However, when the conductivity ratio was between 50 and 15,000, the thermal conductivity ratio value should be considered for the analysis. It was also found that the existence of protrusion resistance influenced the thermal field up to the distance of 3-4 times of the protrusion length.

  • The formation and stability of stationary laser weld keyholes are investigated using a numerical simulation. The effect of multiple reflections in the keyhole is estimated using the ray tracing method, and the free surface profile, flow velocity and temperature distribution are calculated numerically. In the simulation, the keyhole is formed by the displacement of the melt induced by evaporation recoil pressure, while surface tension and hydrostatic pressure oppose cavity formation. At laser powers of 500W and greater, the protrusion occurs on the keyhole wall, which results in keyhole collapse and void formation at the bottom. Initiation of the protrusion is caused mainly by collision of upward and downward flows due to the pressure components.

  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of incisor protrusion on the mucogingival parameters including the width of attached gingiva. Thirty-seven young adults with lower anterior crowding were selected for this study. From the study model, the degrees of relative and absolute protrusions were measured for each lower incisor. Clinical non height, the width of keratinized gingiva, probing depth and the width of attached gingiva were measured with digital vernier calipers and Florida Probe System. Through comparing the difference of the above measurements between protruded and non-protruded incisors, and correlation analysis between each measurement, following results were obtained: 1. The protruded incisor showed narrow width of keratinized and attached gingiva comparing to non-protruded incisor. 2. The protruded incisor showed greater clinical crown height comparing to non-protruded side while there was no difference in the probing depth between protruded and non-protruded side. 3. The difference in the width of attached gingiva between protruded and non-protruded incisors showed higher significance in the lateral incisor than in the central incisor. 4. The degree of relative protrusion showed higher correlation with the width of attached gingiva than the degree of absolute protrusion. 5. Clinical crown height showed higher correlation with the width of attached gingiva than the degree of protrusion.

  • It is very important for the ideal restorations of anterior openbite patients to record the mandibular movement and to harmonize mandibular movement with other organs in stomatognathic systems. This study was designed to compare the mandibular movement of anterior openbite patients with that of normal bite(Angle Class I) patients, to ascertain which components of mandibular movement have differences between two groups, and to use for occlusal treatment of mandibular movement. Saphon Visi-trainer Model 3(Tokyo Shizaisha Co. Japan) and Denar Pantronic(Denar Corp.,U.S.A.) were used to record mandibular movement. Pantronic survey was peformed by using an arbitrary hinge axis according to manufacturer's direction. Twenty-eight adult who have physiologically normal occlusion(Angle Class I) and are free of TM dysfunction were selected as a control group(Group 1). Fifteen adult who are anterior openbite patient and have not anterior guidance function and have posterior interference at protrusion were selected as a experimental group(Group 2). The results are as follows : 1. There was no statistically significant difference between the average immediate and progressive side shift of anterior openbite patients(0.54mm, $7.57^{\circ}$) and those of normal group(0.49mm, $5.96^{\circ}$). 2. The average protrusive and orbiting condylar inclination of anterior openbite patient$(30.87^{\circ},\;32.27^{\circ})$ were significantly lower than those of normal group$(36.11^{\circ},\;39.04^{\circ})$ (P<0.05). 3. In the results of Visi-trainer recordings, the mean for the maximum protrusion, the maximum laterotrusion, the angle of laterotrusion and the angle of protrusion in the horizontal trajectory between group 1 and 2 did not differ significantly. 4. The mean for the angle of protrusion, the maximum opening in the frontal trajectory, the ICP-RCP(A-P) distance and the angle of protrusion in the sagittal trajectory differ significantly(P<0.05). 5. The significant correlation was found between orbiting condylar inclination and protrusive condylar inclination.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of clutch adaptation on the mandibular rotational torque movement in normal people. 69 dental students were selected for the study. Their mean age were 23.6 years and they did not present any signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. $BioEGN^{(R)}$ with $Rotate^{(R)}$ program was used to observe and record the amount of mandibular rotational torque on protrusion, on right excursion, on left excursion, and on comfortable wide opening movement. The natural tooth contact movement and the movement with clutch were performed in the above four each mandibular movement. Clutch was made by the method used in $Pantronic^{(R)}$ clutch fabrication. Distance of slant frontal which was translatory trajectory in frontal plane and degree of rotational torque in horizontal and in frontal plane were recorded. The data obtained were processed with SPSSWIN program and the results were as follows : 1. Distance of slant frontal in each mandibular movement generally increased with clutch. 2. Degree of rotational torque in horizontal and in frontal plane on protrusion and on lateral excursions did not increase with clutch, but the degree on wide opening increased with clutch. 3. Degree of rotational torque in horizontal plane on protrusion and on lateral excursions did not show any difference between right and left side, but the degree in frontal plane on protrusion and on lateral excursions showed significant difference between right and left side. 4. Total amount of rotational torque from right and left sides on protrusion and lateral excursions were not increased with clutch, but the degree on wide opening movement was increased with clutch. And in this case, degree in horizontal plane was larger than that in frontal plane. 5. Correlation between total amount of rotational torque in horizontal plane and that in frontal plane were highly significant on protrusion and on lateral excursions with or without clutch, but the significant correlation on wide opening without clutch became not significant with clutch.

  • In a uniform field, when an electrode with a hemispherical protrusion is set in atmosphere, by applying the streamer breakdown criterion and the surface roughness factor, the effect of field distortion due to electrode surface roughness on breakdown is investigated theoretically. A quantitative relation between the threshold of breakdown and the air pressure times the heigh of protrusion is derived by the aid of a computor and the results are compared with that of SF$_{6}$./.
