Rapid prototyping technology has been widely applied to the design process in the industry. This technology made it easy to generate a prototype which acts like a real product in logic. However, this technology has not been validated sufficiently as a usability test method. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis : There was no significant difference between a real product and its prototype. An experiment was designed to test it statistically. a microwave oven was selected and its prototype was generated using a rapid prototyping tool. Six subjects used the microwave oven and another six subjects used the prototype to perform five scenario tasks. As a result, there was significant difference between the real product and prototype in success rate, task completion time, and number of buttons pressed. The prototype was more difficult to operate than the real product. Therefore we should be careful when we apply rapid prototyping. technology. In the discussions, the causes of the difference were identified and some guidelines were suggested for who wants to apply rapid prototyping tool to the usability test.

Polystyrene foam is easily melted and vapoured by heat, has a proper quality in the pattern manufacturing and has a low price. The objective of this study is to develop a rapid prototyping method fur polystyrene foam pattern manufacuring to use the eliminative pattern casting (EPC). Applying fur the rapid prototyping concept reversely, the unnecessary part of section is vapored away by heat source of laser beam. In order to examine the applicability between laser beam process and polystyrene foam material, the basic experiments such as hole, line, plane and contour process are carried out. With these results, various three-dimensional shape patterns are made and this rapid prototyping tool for polystyrene foam manufacturing.

In order to reduce the lead-time and cost, many useful methods have been applied to rapid prototyping (RP) in recent years. But cutting process is still considered as one of the effective RP methods that have been developed and currently available in the industry. It also offers practical advantages in aspects of precision and versatility. However, traditional 3-axis NC machining has some inherent limitations such as the restriction of tool accessibility and the complex setup. In this work, a new rapid prototyping system with high speed 5-axis machining of plastics has been developed to overcome those limitations. And cutting experiments were conducted to determine the design factors of the system and the cutting conditions of plastics. The architecture of developed system is described in detail and the successful application examples are presented.

Rapid prototyping is becoming an increasingly importnat techniuqe involved in the design cycles of modern industry. The majority of the rapid prototyping systems currently available use photo-reactive resins and waxes as the raw materials. The models produced by these systems often have relatively poor mechanical and physical properties and as such have a limited application to the production of advance prototypes but are excellently suited to the manufacture of engineering prototyes. This work identifies the need to produed near production grade advance prototypes from a variety of metals and a novel prototyping process based on the techniques of selective laser sintering and conventional machining is proposed. The integration of a carbon dioxide laser and a conventional machine tool to create the opto-mechanical by multi-layer sintering and some of the problems involved are also discussed.

This paper introduces a new approach for saving build time of hybrid rapid prototyping by decomposing a part into minimum number of layers. In the hybrid rapid prototyping, a part of a complicated shape is realized by adding layers of a simpler shape, each of which is obtained by machining a sheet of constant thickness from its top and bottom surfaces. Thus it is desired to decompose a given part into the minimum number of layers while guaranteeing each layer to be fabricated from the given sheets using a 3-axis milling machine. To satisfy these requirements, a concave edge-based algorithm is proposed to decompose a part into layers by considering the tool accessibility, the total number of layers, and the allowable sheet thickness.

Proposed in the paper is a V-FMS (Virtual Flexible Manufacturing System) model to be used as a prototyping tool for FMS design. The proposed V-FMS framework follows an object-oriented modeling (OOM) paradigm and is based on a set of user requirements for FMS prototyping. The V-FMS model consists of four types of object: virtual device, transfer handler, state manager and flow controller. A virtual device model, which corresponds to a static model in OOM, consists of two parts, shell and core, for reusability. A transfer handler corresponds to a functional model of OOM and it stores low level device commands required to perform job flow operations between giving and taking devices. The state manager and the flow controller constitute a dynamic model of OOM. The proposed V-FMS model has been implemented for a couple of linear type FMS-lines
We are suggesting an authoring tool can be used for prototyping in the augmented reality based product design environment. This tool is for authors without an engineering background to use. Our authoring tool can adjust the properties of visual, sound, and haptic feedback at the same time for more practical prototyping. Also the proposed modulated architecture can be applied flexibly to changes of platforms or hardware. Also user interfaces can be dynamically updated by changing just description files. finally, the suggested authoring methods exploit the advantages of both graphical and tangible user interfaces. Authors can intuitively make adjustments to many parameters using the TUI, and then they can do the same thing precisely using the GVI. The proposed authoring methods can be used for exhibition and entertainment contents using multi-sensory feedback in AR environment. As a future work, qualitative and quantitative usability test will be conducted.

Internet becomes very common tool far communication and data sharing. Virtual readily(VR) on web browser, and virtual prototyping and virtual manufacturing is widely used in many engineering fields. The reduction of overall development process and error minimization during data conversion becomes very crucial where sharing data via Internet and VR. This paper deals with the advantage and disadvantage of VRML format used in RP(Rapid Prototyping), and a software for RP data preparation is developed. If VRML format as an international standard for VR, is replaced with STL format, the weak points of STL formal can be overcome and the technique related to virtual prototyping and virtual manufacturing can be addressed more systematically by sharing the data. The system developed in this work shows a good window to get access to a mare realistic observation of an object for an RP system from a long remote sites in a more systematic way.
Laminate tooling process is a fast and simple method to make metal tools directly for various molding processes such as injection molding in rapid prototyping field. Metal sheets are usually cut, stacked, aligned and joined with brazing or soldering. Through the joining process, all of the metal sheet layers should be rigidly joined. When joining process parameters are not appropriate, there would be defects in the layers. Among various types of defects, non-bonded gaps of the tool surface are of great importance, because they directly affect the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of the final products. If a laminate tool with defects has to be abandoned, it could lead to great loss of time and cost. Therefore a repair method for non-bonded gaps of the surface is essential and has important meaning for rapid prototyping. In this study, a rapid laminate tooling system composed of a CO2 laser, a furnace, and a milling machine was developed. Metal sheets were joined by furnace brazing, dip soldering and adhesive bonding. Joined laminate tools were machined by a high-speed milling machine to improve surface quality. Also, repair brazing and soldering methods of the laminates using the $CO_2$ laser system have been investigated. ill laser repair process, the beam duration, beam power and beam profile were of great importance, and their effects were simulated by [mite element methods. The simulation results were compared with the experimental ones, and optimal parameters for laser repair process were investigated.

Manufacturing industry is changing rapidly. Prototyping with rapid manufacturing is a part of every business in many companies and prototypes are used efficiently as a part of the production development process. Sheet metal forming has traditionally been a technology area where prototyping has been extremely expensive and efficient options for low volume have been limited. This paper describes the process for incremental sheet forming technologies to make the prototype for a brake dust shield of vehicles, which includes the remodeling method to make a base mold and tool path for sheet metal forming and 5-axes laser cutting machine to trim the prototype product.
