  • Aniline was polymerized in various protonic acid (HF, HC1, HBr, HI, $H_2SO_4$) aqueous solutions with different acidity. During the reaction, the dimer formation and the reaction rate were examined as functions of acidity (pH) and the size of counter ions. Open-circuit potential measurements were carried out to investigate the effect of protonic acid on the reaction rate. The results showed that polymerization rate in HF aqueous solution was very slow and polymerization did not occur in HI aqueous solution. These results were explained in terms of acidity and power of oxidation. The ratio of formation of dimers varied with the kind of protonic acid, and the results were explained with the nucleophilicity, solvation effect, and mobility of counter ions.

  • The infrared spectra obtained in the region of $4000∼1200 $cm^{-1}$ has been measured for pyridine, tertiary butylamine, and ethylenediamine adsorbed on various cation-exchanged silicates at various degassing temperature. It was possible to distinguish between protonic and aprotonic acid sites of all cation-exchanged silicates which exhibited both Bronsted and Lewis acidity. The sodium form appeared to be the least reactive towards adsorbates. The relative ratio of the band intensities of tertiary butylamine was directly related to the polarizing power of exchanged cations. Ethylenediamine was less easily desorbed from silicate surface than tertiary butylamine due to the additional amino group to react with surface active site, and probably to form ether hydrogen bond with surface oxgen by liberating migrating proton besides the coordination bond with Lewis acid site and the formation of$NH3^+$ species with Bronsted acid site.

  • Polyaniline (PANI) has emerged as one of the most promising conducting polymers of the many types of conducting polymers in that it is soluble and therefore processable in the conducting form, and it is both environmentally and thermally stable together with high conductivity when it is doped by functionalized protonic acids like camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA). • Perylene tetracarboxylic anhydride derivatives have been well-known as an n-type channel material.$^1$ Here, we report perylene-based pyrrolopyrone derivatives as an n-type channel material. 1,8-naphthalene(l) and 1,2-phenylene(2)-based pyrrolopyrone derivatives were synthesized and characterized. Derivatives 1, 2 were soluble only protonic solvents with high acidity such as methane sulfonic acid and trifluoroacetic acid. Thin film transistors were fabricated by vacumn deposition and solution casting and electron mobility of the device were measured.

  • We prepared the polyaniline (Pani) film and powder by chemical polymerization and doping with different dopants and also investigated the capability of Li//polyaniline cells after assembling. The oxidation/reduction potentials and electrochemical reaction of Li//polyaniline cells were tested by cyclic voltammetry technique. The Li//Pani-HCl cells with 10% and 20% conductors show a little larger specific discharge capacities than that without conductor. The highest discharge capacity of almost 50 mAh/g at 100th cycle is also achieved. However, Li//Pani-LiPF6 with 20% conductor shows a remarkable performance of ~90 mAh/g at 100th cycle. This is feasible value for using as the positive electrode material of lithium ion secondary batteries. It is also proved that the powder type electrode of Pani is better to use than the film type one to improve the specific discharge capacity and its stability with cycle.

  • Perylene-based pyrrolopyrone derivative (PPD) was synthesized via condensation reaction with perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and 1,2-phenylenediarnine as n-type channel material. The structure of PPD was characterized by spectroscopic methods such FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR. PPD exhibited high thermal stability ($T_{d5wt%}: 560^{\circ}C$) and was found to be soluble only in protonic solvents with high acidity such as methane sulfonic acid and trifluoroacetic acid. The PPD solution showed maximum absorption and emission at 601 and 628 nm, respectively. Thin film transistors were fabricated by vacuum deposition and solution casting method. The electron mobilities of the devices were achieved as high as $0.17{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/Vs$ for vacuum deposited device and $0.4{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/Vs$ for spin coated device, respectively.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) were prepared to investigate the effect of aging on their morphology by swelling them for up to 7 days. PAM was used both as a crosslinking agent and as a donor of the hydrophilic-COOH group. A $30 wt\%$ weight loss of the dry membrane was observed in the swelling test after 6 days. The surface of the membrane was dramatically changed after the swelling test. The surface roughness of the PVA/PAM membrane was increased, as determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The swelling loosened the polymer structure, due to the release of the unreacted polymer and the decomposition of the ester bond, thereby resulting in an increase in the free volume capable of containing water molecules. The water molecules present in the form of free water were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The fraction of free water increased with increasing swelling time. The swelling of the membrane may provide space for the transport of protons and increase the mobility of the protonic charge carriers. The proton conductivity of the membranes measured at T= 30 and $50^{\circ}C$ was in the range of $10^{-3} to 10^{-2} S/cm$, and slightly increased with increasing swelling time and temperature.

  • Polyaniline Emeraldine salt (PANI-salt) prepared by the common chemical oxidative polymerization caused the corrosion of the metallic injection mold by protonic acid such as HCl which used as a dopant. PANI-salt, polyaniline doped with dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), was obtained by the emulsion polymerization in nonpolar organic solvent, toluene. In this study DBSA was used as a dopant along with a surfactant. PANI-salt and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) have a good solubility in toluene. Blends with different ratio of PANI and HIPS were prepared through a solution-cast blending. The structure of PANI-salt was characterized by FT-IR and UV-Vis. The morphology, thermal, and electrical properties for PANI-HIPS blends were investigated. Injection molded under $103^{\circ}C$, 120 psi, PANI-HIPS showed the highest electrical conductivity ($6.02{\times}10^{-5}\;S/cm$) after blending PANI (50 mL) and HIPS (1 g).

  • A layered perovskite of Dion-Jacobson phase, $RbLaTa_2O_7$, was successfully exfoliated into colloidal suspension via successive ion-exchange and intercalation reaction. The pristine perovskite $RbLaTa_2O_7$ was synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction, and then, it was ion-exchanged with hydrochloric acid to obtain a protonic form of perovskite. The resulting proton-exchanged perovskite was reacted with ethylamine to increase interlayer spaces for further intercalation reaction. Finally, the ethylamine-intercalated form was exfoliated into nanosheets via an intercalation of bulky organic cations (tetrabutylammonium). According to X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the TBA-intercalated form showed remarkably increased interlayer spacing (${\Delta}d$ = 1.67 nm) in comparison with that of the pristine material. Transmission electron microscopic image of exfoliated perovskite clearly revealed that the present exfoliated perovskite were composed of very thin layers. This exfoliated perovskite nanosheets could be applicable as building blocks for fabricating functional nanocomposites.
