The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of corrugated packaging coated with aluminum (Al) on quality characteristics of red paprika during storage at $25^{\circ}C$. Characteristics such as weight loss, hardness, total phenolic content, antioxidant activities, polygalacturonic acid (PG) activity, and oxidative enzyme activities (polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities) of paprikas, packed in corrugated packaging with or without Al-coating were compared as a function of storage time. Al coating inside of corrugated box was found to inhibit PG activity, resulting in prevention of weight loss and maintenance of hardness of paprika during storage, compared to the control sample. This may be due to Al coating treatment that enhance moisture-proof property and hinder gas transmission of corrugated packaging. Furthermore, paprika in Al-coated-corrugated packaging was lower in oxidative enzyme activities than the control, which caused higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activities during storage. As a results, the Al coated-corrugated packaging can be used as a functional packaging material to extend the shelf-life and improve the storage quality of paprika by preventing their respiration and transpiration.
With the goal of developing a new functional fermentation milk using green tea powder (GP), milk was fermented with direct vat set (DVS) starter culture containing Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei and L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. We investigated fermentation characteristics and antioxidative activities of fermented milk supplemented with different concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3%) of GP. All samples were evaluated for pH, total acidity, viable cell count, and sugar contents. The pH of all samples decreased during fermentation, and the final pH ranged from 4.35 to 4.51. The acidity increased during fermentation, after the fermentation was completed, the titratable acidity was 0.8 to 1.1%. And viable cell count of all samples increased during fermentation, and the final viable cell count was 8.57 to 8.89 log CFU/mL. The sugar content decreased as the fermentation proceeded and finally reached 12 to $13^{\circ}Brix$. And increasing GP, decreased brightness and increased yellowness. Increasing GP concentration added to milk, improved DPPH free radical scavenging activity and ferric ion reducing activity of fermentation milk. The fermentation milk kept their pH, total acidity and viable cell counts standard of fermentation milk during the storage period at $4^{\circ}C$. These findings confirmed the possibility of development of the novel functional fermentation milk through the investigation of the quality characteristics of the fermentation milk added with GP.
NeFeB anisotropy bonded magnet has proposed a new paradigm of weight reduction of small motors by replacing the conventional ferrite permanent magnets with its high magnetic property of 25 MGOe during last five years. It has also advanced by leaps and bounds in the field of motor industry for automobiles and electric power tools. And it has led a new innovation of fifty percent weight lightening compared to its current motors by correctly focusing on fuel performance improvement through weight lightening that automobile industry chased. There was, however, another price skyrocketing in 2011 after China had announced its export regulation in rare earth materials in July, 2010. And this price change has an extensive impact on the industries that consume rare earth magnets. This environmental change has caused technical challenge to improve the performance by using least amount of rare earth elements in NdFeB anisotropy bonded magnets, and led to make a new technical approach to a new applied field. In this article, we will show how each nation deals with this industrial issue, and introduce development trend and application of anisotropic NdFeB bonded magnets, so-called MAGFINE made by Aichi Steel Corp.
Physical properties and compositions of dietary fiber sources (DFS) from peels of Asian pear fruit, Hosui, Niitaka and Chuwhangbae, were examined at different growth stages, young, unripe, and ripe fruits, to investigate their use as functional ingredients. Total dietary fiber (TDF) contents of DFS prepared from peels of three cultivars at three stages were high, 74.00-88.38%, with most being insoluble dietary fiber. Total phenolic compound contents of DFS were 1.64-4.46mg/g, with those of Niitaka and Chuwhangbae increasing with growth stages. Density of DFS from young fruit was significantly lower than those from unripe and ripe fruits (p<0.05), because particle size of DFS increased with growth stages within cultivars. Water-holding capacity (WHC) and oil absorption were 3.11-6.03g water/g solid and 1.98-2.57g oil/g sample, respectively. Young fruits, which showed lowest WHC value, had highest oil absorption value. Particle size of DFS had significant correlation with density, WHC, and oil absorption (p<0.05). Physical properties of DFS were mainly influenced by cellulose and uronic acid.
Protein-bound polysaccharides (PBP) were extracted from the mycellia of Lentinus edodes SR-1, and their anti-tumor activities and immunopotentiating properties were observed. The amounts of PBP needed to extend the doubling time twofold (1 unit) were found to be 1 mg for mouse leukemic cells $P_{388}\;and\;L_{1210}$; 4.4, 3.6 and 6.6 for bowel cancer cells, HCT-48, HRT-18, HT-29 respectively; and 2.6 mg for liver cancer cell, Hep G2. When $P_{388}\;and\;L_{1210}$ were treated with 4 mg of PBP, more than 90% of the cell number were reduced in 48 hours. However, 9 mg of PBP and 72 hrs of incubation time were needed to obtain the same effect for HRT-18, HT-29, and Hep G2. The significant reduction of cell size was observed as the amount of PBP and the incubation time increased. Mice spleen weight and plaque forming cell number increased when the cancer cells were treated with PBP.
A novel design of tubular segmented-in-series(SIS) solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) sub module was presented in this paper. The tubular ceramic support was fabricated by the extrusion technique. The NiO-YSZ anode and the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte were deposited onto the ceramic support by dip coating method. After sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, a dense and crack-free YSZ film was successfully fabricated. Also, the multi-layered cathode composed of LSM-YSZ composite, LSM and LSCF were coated onto the sintered ceramic support by dip coating method and sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$. The performance of the tubular SIS SOFC cell and sub module electrically connected by the Ag-glass interconnect was measured and analysed with different fuel flow and operating temperature.

Recently, the use of TiO2 as a phtocatalyst has been diversely investigated due to its excellent durability performance and high photocatalytic reaction efficiency. Active researches have particularly focused on the development of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites in order to remove the atmospheric pollutants. Furthermore, the potential utilization of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites as road accessories such as tunnels, road median separators and soundproof walls in the form of tiles, blocks and structural components has been widely examined. In this regard, a thorough understanding on the material characteristics of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites should be preceded. The present overview article, therefore, revisits previous studies of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites and summarizes their various physicochemical properties and atmospheric pollutants removal performance.
While constructing multistorey buildings with reinforced concrete framed structures it is a common practice to provide parking space for vehicles at the ground floor level. This floor will generally consist of open frames without any infilled walls and is called an open-storey. From a post disaster damage survey carried out, it was noticed that during the January 26, 2001 Bhuj (Gujarat, India) earthquake, a large number of reinforced concrete framed buildings with open-storey at ground floor level, suffered extensive damage and in some cases catastrophic collapse. This has brought into sharp focus the need to carry out systematic studies on the seismic vulnerability of such buildings. Determination of vulnerability requires realistic structural response estimations taking into account the stochasticity in the loading and the system parameters. The stochastic finite element method can be effectively used to model the random fields while carrying out such studies. This paper presents the details of stochastic finite element analysis of a five-storey three-bay reinforced concrete framed structure with open-storey subjected to standard seismic excitation. In the present study, only the stochasticity in the system parameters is considered. The stochastic finite element method used for carrying out the analysis is based on perturbation technique. Each random field representing the stochastic geometry/material property is discretised into correlated random variables using spatial averaging technique. The uncertainties in geometry and material properties are modelled using the first two moments of the corresponding parameters. In evaluating the stochastic response, the cross-sectional area and Young' modulus are considered as independent random fields. To study the influence of correlation length of random fields, different correlation lengths are considered for random field discretisation. The spatial expectations and covariances for displacement response at any time instant are obtained as the output. The effect of open-storey is modelled by suitably considering the stiffness of infilled walls in the upper storey using cross bracing. In order to account for changes in soil conditions during strong motion earthquakes, both fixed and hinged supports are considered. The results of the stochastic finite element based seismic analysis of reinforced concrete framed structures reported in this paper demonstrate the importance of considering the effect of open-storey with appropriate support conditions to estimate the realistic response of buildings subjected to earthquakes.
We previously reported that the extract of Taraxacum platycarpum (AF-343) had several biological properties such as skin hydration and anti-inflammatory effects, thereby AF-343 be a promising anti-atopic dermatitis agent. However, few studies have been conducted to evaluate its effect on modulation of extracellular matrix proteins in human skin fibroblasts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expressions of type I collagen, MMP-1, Smad2/3, and TIMP-1 proteins in AF-343-treated human skin fibroblasts. Human skin fibroblasts were treated by various concentrations of AF-343 (0~2 mg/ml). The expressions of type I collagen, matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), Smad2/3, and TIMP-1 proteins were analyzed by Western blot analysis. In addition, level of type I collagen mRNA was analyzed by CAT assay. Expression of type I collagen protein was increased in AF-343-treated human skin fibroblasts by dose and time-dependent manners. Consistent with this result, the expressions of phospho-Smad2/3 in skin fibroblasts were increased and MMP-1 expression was decreased by AF-343 treatment. TIMP-1 expression was not significantly changed in AF-343 treated skin fibroblasts. Extract of Taraxacum platycarpum (AF-343)-induced up-regulation of type I collagen expression was through increased expression of phospho-Smad2/3. These results were occurred combined with down-regulation of MMP-1 in skin fibroblasts. Taken together, this study indicated that AF-343 has property of the modulation of ECM in tissue as well as skin hydration and anti-inflammation.
Mechanical properties and their adhesion behavior with zinc- and brass-plated steel cords of natural rubber/acrylonitrile-butadiene blend compounds were investigated as a function of blend ratio. The Mooney viscosity and stress relaxation time were found to be lowered with increasing NBR content. Tensile modulus generally increased with increasing NBR content. Tensile stress at break stayed constant up to about 40 phr and showed minimum at $50{\sim}60 phr$, and thereafter increased with increasing NBR content. Strain at break decreased linearly below 50 phr, and above the level it showed nearly constant value. Based on the abrupt drops in elastic modulus and tan ${\delta}$ peak, the glass transition temperature of NR and NBR were found to be -55 and $-10^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the case of NR/NBR blend compounds, two distinct transition points were observed and each transition position was not affected by NBR level indicating an incompatible nature of NR/NBR blend system. The pullout force and rubber coverage decreased to the level of about 40% to that of pure m compound, when the 50 phr of NR was replaced by NBR. However, the pure NBR compound showed the comparable adhesion performance with NR(${\sim}90%$). The sulfur concentration was found to become lower with the increased NBR content at the adhesion interface based on the Auger spectrometer results, representing a lack of adhesion layer formation, and this was explained for a possible cause of low adhesion performance with adding NBR.
