Electrochemical etching is a popular process to apply metal patterning in various industries. In this study, the electrochemical etching using a patterned copper layer was proposed to fabricate multilayered structures. The process consists of electrodeposition, laser patterning, and electrochemical etching, and a repetition of this process enables the production of multilayered structures. In the fabrication of a multilayered structure, an etch factor that reflects the etched depth and pattern size should be considered. Hence, the etch factor in the electrochemical etching process using the copper layer was calculated. After the repetition process of electrochemical etching using copper layers, the surface characteristics of the workpiece were analyzed by EDS analysis and surface profilometer. As a result, multilayered structures with various shapes were successfully fabricated via electrochemical etching using copper layers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of 3 chairside polishing methods and laboratory polishing methods on surface roughness and $C.$$albicans$ adhesion of polyamide denture base. Materials and methods: Using contact profilometer, the surface of polyamide specimens ($25{\times}15{\times}2mm$) was studied after conventional polishing without finishing and after chiarside polishing with 2 chiarside polishing kits and chairside-pumice polishing following finishing with tungsten carbide bur. To evaluate the adhesion of $C.$$albicans$, $C.$$albicans$ suspension was overlayed on the test specimen. And the specimens were incubated for 2 hours. Imprint culture method was achieved and counted the colony on the agar plate. Polished polyamide were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. The statistics were conducted using one-way ANOVA and in case of difference, Scheffe test and Tamhane's T2 test were used. Results: Surface roughness (Ra) of surfaces polished with 2 chairside polishing kits had higher than conventional polishing and pumice polishing. The highest roughness value was $0.32{\pm}0.10{\mu}m$, and the lowest was $0.02{\pm}0.00{\mu}m$. The adhesion of $C.$$albicans$ on the specimens polished with chairside polishing group and pumice polishing group were increased than conventional polishing group ($P$<.01). Conclusion: Conventional laboratory polishing was found to produce the smoothest surface and the lowest adhesion of $C.$$albicans$. Two groups polished with Chairside polishing kits were similar with respect to surface roughness. Surface of the specimen polished with pumice is significantly smoother than 2 chairside polishing groups, but the result of $C.$$albicans$ adhesion is that group polished with pumice was similar with 2 chairside polishing groups ($P$>.01).
Purpose: The use of appropriate instruments to clean surfaces with minimal change, is critical for the successful maintenance of a dental implant. However, there is no consensus about the type and methodology for such instruments. The aim of this study was to characterize changes in the roughness of titanium surfaces treated by various scaling instruments. Methods: Thirty-seven identical disks (5 mm in diameter) were investigated in this study. The specimens were divided into eight groups according to the types of instrumentation and the angle of application. Ultrasonic scaling systems were applied on a titanium disk to simulate standard clinical conditions. The equipment included a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler with a newly developed metallic tip (NS group), a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler with a conventional tip (CS group), a piezoelectric root planer ultrasonic scaler with a conventional tip (PR group), and a plastic hand curette (PH group). In addition, the sites treated using piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler systems were divided two sub-groups: 15 and 45 degrees. The treated titanium surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the average surface roughness (Ra) and mean roughness profile depth (Rz) were measured with a profilometer. Results: SEM no significant changes in the titanium surfaces in the NS group, regardless of the angle of application. The PH group also showed no marked changes to the titanium surface, although some smoothening was observed. All CS and PR sites lost their original texture and showed irregular surfaces in SEM analysis. The profilometer analysis demonstrated that the roughness values (Ra and Rz) of the titanium surfaces increased in all, except the PH and NS groups, which showed roughness decreases relative to the untreated control group. The Ra value differed significantly between the NS and PR groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that changes in or damage to titanium surfaces might be more affected by the hardness of the scaler tip than by the application method. Within the limitations of this study, the newly developed metallic scaler tip might be especially suitable for peri-implant surface decontamination, due to its limited effects on the titanium surface.
After adjusting glazed surface of laminate veneer porcelain by reduction in the clinical procedure, an additional polishing procedure is required to smoothen the roughened surface by reduction, as it is difficult to glaze it again in the furnace. In this study, four kinds of laminate veneer porcelain were ground with diamond points as done in the clinical procedure. The adjusted porcelain surface was polished with Durawhite stone, Ceramiste points, Exa cerapol, Porcelain polishing wheel, Diamond polishing paste. The degree of surface roughness was evaluated with SEM and profilometer at each step, The self glazed surface and the glazed surface with glazing powder were compared with the polished surface and surface roughness of four kinds of laminate veneer porcelain according to the polishing method and step were obserbed. The following results were obtained : 1. There was no difference in the average surface roughness Ra value and the surface roughness obserbed under SEM according to the polishing methods and steps used, among the four kinds of laminate veneer porcelain including Colorlogic, Exelco, Vintage, and Vitadur alpha product. 2. Due to porosities, the surface in the course of polishing by polishing instruments was rougher than the glazed surface, evaluated with a SEM. 3. Insta-Glaze diamond polishing paste has no statistical difference with self glazed group 1, although it has a lower value in average surface roughness Ra value. 4. Group 2 which was glazed with galzing powder was lowest in view of SEM, but it revealed higher surface roughness Ra value than group 1, the glazed surface and group 8, polished by diamond polishing paste, due to surface waveness. 5. Proper surface smoothness could not be in the surface roughness analysis of SEM and profilometer by Shofu laminate polishing kit composed of Diamond point, Durawhite stone and Ceramiste points. Based on the results of this study, the following conclusions can be drawn. We obtain low surface roughness than glazed surface by polishing instruments, but not perfect results clinically. In order to obtain a perfect clinical result or a surface smoothness comparable to glazed porcelain there is a need for further improvement of porcelain materials, condensa-tion techniques, polishing instruments and polishing methods. Furthermore card should be taken not to breakdown the glazed surface during the clinical and laboratory procedure.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of mechanical properties and surface topography of various nickel titanium wires after heat sterilization for recycling with quantitative method. The materials used were four kinds of nickel titanium orthodontic wires including a Korean product. Experimental specimens were treated with two kinds of heat sterilization methods ; dry heat ($180^{\circ}C$, 60min) and autoclave ($121^{\circ}C$, 15-20psi, 30min). Mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile test with Instron 4466 (load cell capacity:.1000 kg, cross head speed:5mm/min, grip distince:40mm in room temperature). Surface topography of various wires was compared with each other qualitatively by using scanning electron microscopy and quantitatively by using profilometer. The findings were analyzed statistically with student t-tests. The results were as follows; 1. Neither method of heat sterilization had any effects on tensile properties of the nickel-titanium wires used in this experiment. 2. Before heat sterilization, the surface smoothness was highest in Optimalloy, followed by Align and Sentalloy, with NiTi showing the lowest smoothness value. 3. In surface topography, Align and Optimalloy were not influenced by heat sterilization. NiTi, on the other hand, had increased roughness after dry heat sterilization and Sentalloy showed the same tendency after each of the two heat sterilization procedures.
The purpose of this study is to investigate a possible contribution of nonspecific esterases, which occur in the oral cavity, to the degradation of ester bonds in polymethacrylates. One of the problems connected with the use of composite resins for restorations is their inadequate resistance to wear. It has been shown that methacrylate hydrolysis can be catalyzed by enzymes and that a carboxylic hydrolase (porcine liver esterase) catalyzed the hydrolysis of several mono - and dimethacrylates. The softening effect on a BISGMA/TEGDMA polymer induced by hydrolase will accelerate the in vivo wear of the polymer. Porcine liver esterase (EC 3.1.1.1) 3.2 mol/L $(NH_4)_2$$SO_4$ was obtained from Sigma Chemical Company. The esterase activity of one unit is defined as the amount of enzyme capable of hydrolyzing $l{\mu}mol$ ethyl butyrate per min at pH 8.0 AT $25^{\circ}C$. Phosphate buffer, 10mmol/L, pH 7.0, was made by adjustment of a solution of $Na_2HPO_4$ with $H_3PO_4$. Composite resins used in this study are Silux Plus, Z-100, Durafil VS, and Prisma APH. Cylindrical specimens, 14mm in diameter and 3mm thick, of Silux Plus, Z-100, Durafil VS, Prisma APH were polymerized under the celluloid strip. 60 specimens were divided into 2 groups. One group was emersed only in buffer solution, the other group was emersed in buffer and enzyme solution. Silux Plus and Z-100 were divided into 2 subgroups, one subgroup was cured only Visilux 2. And the other subgroup was cured Visilux 2 and Triaid II. Thereafter, specimens were polished to its best achievable surface according to manufacture's directions. The Vickers hardness of the specimens was measured after 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 15, 50 days. The solutions were changed after each measurement. Composite resin surfaces were evaluated for the surface roughness with profilometer (${\alpha}$-step 200, Tencor instruments, USA) after 1 and 50 days. And then surfaces of specimens were pictured with stereosopy after 1 and 50 days. The results were as follows. 1. The surface hardness of Silux plus, durafil VS, and Prisma APH were decreased with time. But, the surface hardness of Z-100 was not decreased. 2. The surface hardness of all composite resins was decreased by esterase. 3. Composite resins, which were light-cured by Visilux 2 and concomitantly baked by oven, showed more hardened surface than light-cured by Visilux 2 only. 4. Significant surface changes were occured in Silux plus after esterase treatment.
The aim of this study was to develop a method for measuring the slumping resistance of resin composites and to relate it to the rheological characteristics. Five commercial hybrid composites (Z100. Z250. DenFil, Tetric Ceram. ClearFil) and a nanofill composite (Z350) were used to make disc-shaped specimens of 2 mm thickness. An aluminum mold with square shaped cutting surface was pressed onto the composite discs to make standardized imprints. The imprints were light-cured either immediately (non-slumped) or after waiting for 3 minutes at $25^{\circ}C$ (slumped). White stone replicas were made and then scanned for topography using a laser 3-D profilometer. Slumping resistance index (SRI) was defined as the ratio of the groove depth of the slumped specimen to that of the non-slumped specimen. The pre-cure viscoelasticity of each composite was evaluated by an oscillatory shear test and normal stress was measured by a squeeze test using a rheometer. Flow test was also performed using a flow tester. Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the viscoelastic properties and the SRI. SRI varied between the six materials (Z100 < DenFil < Z250 < ClearFil < Tetric Ceram < Z350). The SRI was strongly correlated with the viscous (loss) shear modulus G' but not with the loss tangent. Also. slumping resistance was more closely related to the resistance to shear flow than to the normal stress. Slumping tendency could be quantified using the imprint method and SRI. The index may be applicable to evaluate the clinical handling characteristics of composites.
In order to investigate various physical and biological properties of dental magnetic attachments studies on retentive characteristics, corrosion properties, cytotoxicity of different magnetic systems for dental applications were done. For the study of retentive characteristics changes of retentive force by increasing air gap, wear properties of various attachment systems and loss of magnetic force by heat treatment were measured. Forte study of corrosion property of magnet covering metal electrochemical corrosion was done in artificial saliva and 0.9% NaCl solution between $-1,000mV_{SCE}\;and\;+1,000mV_{SCE}$. Anodic polarization curves are obtained about 6 types of samples and 2 types of solution. Corroded surfaces were examined with metallurgical microscope, scanning electron microscope and surface profilometer. For the study of cytotoxicity of magnetic attachment and its field cell growth and agar overlay test were done. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In Magnetic attachments using closed circuit retentive force at zero air gap was greater than magnets using open circuit, but decrease of retentive force by increasing air gap was also greater than open systems. 2. After 40,000 cycles of wear test all mechanical attachment resulted in varing degree of retention loss but in magnetic attachments no loss of retentive force was observed. 3. The magnetic attachment using Neodymium magnet showed early loss of retentive force about $200^{\circ}C$ but attachment using Samarium magnet showed some resistance to heat treatment and complete retention loss was observed about $500^{\circ}C$. The keeper was not influenced by heat treatment in retention. 4. In electrochemical corrosion test Dyna magnetic attachment covering metal showed the highiest corrosion resistance and Shiner magnet covering metal showed the least corrosion resistance and examination of corroded surface with metallurgical microscope, scanning electron micro-scope and surface profilometer also showed same results with anodic polarization corves. 5. The result of cell culture tests on the magnet covered with metal showed least recognizable cytotoxicity.

In this study, the effects of multi-dipole type of magnets on the characteristics of the inductively coupled plasmas and $SiO_2$ etch properties were investigated. As the magnets, 4 pairs of permanent magnets were used and, to etch $SiO_2, C_2F_6, CHF_3, C_4F_8, H_2$, and their combinations were used. The characteristics of the magnetized inductively coupled plasmas were investigated using a Langmuir probe and an optical emission spectrometer, and $SiO_2$ etch rates and the etch selectivity over photoresist were measured using a stylus profilometer. The use of multi-dipole magnets increased the uniformity of the ion density over the substrate location even though no significant increase of ion density was observed with the magnets. The use of the magnets also increased the electron temperature and radical densities while reducing the plasma potential. When $SiO_2$ was etched using the fluorocarbon gases, the significant increase of $SiO_2$ etch rates and also the increase of etch uniformity over the substrate were obtained using the magnets. In case of gas combinations with hydrogen, $C_4F_8/H_2$ showed the highest etch rates and etch selectivities over photoresist among the gas combinations with hydrogen used in the experiment. By optimizing process parameters at 1000 Watts of inductive power with the magnets, the highest $SiO_2$ etch rate of 8000 $\AA$/min could be obtained for 50% $C_4F_8/50% H_2$.
