R&D Efficiency and Productivity in Korea, Japan and China (한·중·일 연구개발투자의 효율성 및 생산성변화 비교 분석)

  • This paper measures R&D efficiency and productivity changes of 24 nations including Korea, Japan and China by the non-parametric Malmquist productivity index. The principle findings of this study are as follows. First, R&D efficiency scores of Korea and Japan are 0.837 and 0.834 respectively. Meanwhile China shows 0.420, the worst performance among the selected countries. Second, Korea marked annual productivity increase of 25%, highest among the selected countries', for 2000-2005. R&D productivity in Japan and China, however, decreased 1.9% and 0.9% respectively. Third, annual rates of technology change and technical efficiency change in Japan are 0.6% and -2.5%. Therefore decrease of productivity in Japan is mainly due to technical inefficiency. In case of China, improvement of technical efficiency is the main contributor to productivity growth but technical progress has edged downward in the sample period. In Korea, with annual rate of technology change and technical efficiency change being 5.2% and 18.2% respectively, both efficiency improvement and technical progress has pulled the R&D productivity growth.

Large Firms and M&A Trends in the Digital Transformation Era: Implications for Productivity (디지털 전환 시대의 지배적 기업과 인수합병: 생산성에 미치는 영향)

  • Despite the recent rapid advancement of science and technology, we have been experiencing the decline in productivity since the 2000s. This study aims to investigate the decline at both industry and firm levels, by looking at the emergence and growth of large firms such as Amazon, Alphabet, and Apple and M&A trends. Following the results of previous studies, our results show that productivity at industry level has decreased since the 2000s. Particularly, in the period after 2011, the deterioration of allocative efficiency due to the large firms and the decline in the growth rate of surviving firms in the industry with low ratio of large firms contributed to the productivity decline. On the other hand, our analysis at firm level demonstrates that the productivity of firms that acquired IT firms improved over the entire period. While M&As have a positive impact on productivity, M&As with a demand-side motive such as market penetration and expansion of channels have a relatively larger impact than the ones for production or operation efficiency. Our results also suggest that the higher the proportion of large firms in a specific industry, the lower the productivity of individual firms in the same industry. Overall, given that the industry's structural changes for digital transformation tends to strengthen the growth of large firms, our findings have significant implications by empirically identifying the relationships of the emergence of large firms, the acquisition of IT/Non-IT firms, and motivations for M&As to firm/industry productivity.

Relationship between Concentration of Alcian Blue and Mechanical Properties on High Current Density Copper Electroplating (고전류밀도 구리도금공정에서 알시안블루(Alcian Blue) 농도와 기계적 특성과의 상관관계)

  • The current density in copper electroplating is directly related with the productivity; then, to increase the productivity, an increase in current density is required. This study is based on an analysis of changes in surface characteristics and mechanical properties by applying the addition of Alcian Blue (AB, C56H68Cl4CuN16S4). The amount of Alcian Blue in the electrolytes is changed from 0 to 100 ppm. When Alcian Blue is added at 20 ppm, a seed layer is formed homogeneously on the surface at the initial stage of nucleation. However, crystals electroplated in electrolytes with more than 40 ppm of Alcian Blue are observed to have growth in the vertical direction on the surface and the shapes are like pyramids. This tendency of initial nucleation formation causes protrusions when the thickness of copper foil is 12 ㎛. Thereafter, a lot of extrusions are observed on the group of 100 ppm Alcian Blue. Tensile strength of groups with added Alcian Blue increased by more than 140% compare to no-addition group, but elongation is reduced. These results are due to the decrease of crystal size and changes of prior crystal growth plane from (111) and (200) to (220) due to Alcian Blue.

Relationship Between Climate Change and Total Factor Productivity (기후변화와 국가별 총요소생산성의 관계)

  • This study is to analyze the effects of climate change on national total factor productivity. Changes in temperature and rainfalls which are the representative climate variables are used as main factors to measure climate change. Not only average values of the variables but those highest values are used as independent variables in the model, in order to consider the characteristic pattern of recent climate change, the high volatilities. The OLS results are corresponding to previous literature that average temperature has a negative relationship with productivities while average rainfalls have a positive relationship. However, the results of panel analysis contradict the argument of the negative relationship between average temperature and productivities since human beings can adapt the climate change. Therefore adaptation capacity is important to forecast the effects of climate changes on economies.

Relationship Between Construction Productivity and the Weather Elements in the Reinforced Concrete Structure for the High-rise Apartment Buildings (기후요소와 생산성간의 상관관계 분석에 관한 연구 - 공동주택 철근콘크리트 골조공사를 중심으로 -)

  • Among the various factors influencing construction productivity, weather conditions or elements become very important factors in planning and executing construction project. It is especially true in Korea where the weather changes dramatically through few seasons. In this study, relationship between construction productivity of the reinforced concrete structure we for the high-rise apartment buildings and 5 weather elements including temperature, humidity, day time, rainfall, and wind velocity have been analyzed The results trough regression analysis showed that weather elements explain $58.8\%$ of productivity in total and temperature and day time were more important factors among them.

Productivity Changes by Public Transport Reforms in the Seoul's Urban Bus Industry (서울의 대중교통체계 개편에 따른 시내버스업체의 생산성 변화)

  • The Seoul City Government recently reformed the entire public transport system in an effort to prevent further deterioration in urban bus system's performance and service level. To analyze into impact on the productivity of Seoul's urban bus firms, this paper measures firm-level technical efficiency and productivity change with data envelopment analysis and Malmquist index approach. The paper then conceptualizes that these forms produce three kinds of output (bus-kilometers, passengers, or bus-kilometers and passengers) using five inputs (driver, maintenance, management, vehicle and fuel). The findings show that most (over one half) firms experienced a decline (an improvement) in productivity in the case of specifying only bus-kilometers (passengers) as output. As a result, it is discovered that an average firm had no change in productivity in the case of combining bus-kilometers and passengers as output. This is because the efficiency of an average firm declined due to increase in employees per bus and to an decrease in kilometers per bus. while its effectiveness improved due to an increase in passengers per bus which was caused by an increase in routes and a change in fare structure.

The Changes of Technical Efficiency and Malmquist Productivity of Land Transportation by Region (지역에 따른 육상운송의 효율성과 생산성 분석)

  • Inland transportation system has been improving inefficiencies and structural problems due to excess of supply. Therefore, inland transportation market needs to reform its regional logistics structure in order to increase its competitiveness. To improve the solution, the research studied efficiencies and productivity of inland transportation systems in regions. In order to obtain specific facts, each cities' five years of (2005-2009) balanced panel data on inland transportation system has been studied. According to CCR and BCC analysis, Ul-San has been evaluated as the most efficient DMU during 2005-2008. In addition, in 2009, Seoul was the most efficient DMU. Also, according to Window analysis, Gwan-Ju and Gwangwon-do scored 0.062. Therefore, they were estimated as stable DMUs. According to Malmquist productivity analysis, average productivity indexes of four terms of Chungcheongnam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do haves been increased to 6.6% and 7.3%. I hope this study contributes to the improvement of regional inland transportation system.

Predicting Future Terrestrial Vegetation Productivity Using PLS Regression (PLS 회귀분석을 이용한 미래 육상 식생의 생산성 예측)

  • Since the phases and patterns of the climate adaptability of vegetation can greatly differ from region to region, an intensive pixel scale approach is required. In this study, Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression on satellite image-based vegetation index is conducted for to assess the effect of climate factors on vegetation productivity and to predict future productivity of forests vegetation in South Korea. The results indicate that the mean temperature of wettest quarter (Bio8), mean temperature of driest quarter (Bio9), and precipitation of driest month (Bio14) showed higher influence on vegetation productivity. The predicted 2050 EVI in future climate change scenario have declined on average, especially in high elevation zone. The results of this study can be used in productivity monitoring of climate-sensitive vegetation and estimation of changes in forest carbon storage under climate change.

A Method of Measuring the International Competitiveness of Container Ports: A DEA Approach, Focused on Productivity Analysis (컨테이너항만의 국제경쟁력분석방법 : DEA접근 - 생산효율성분석을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the productive efficiency of world container ports by using the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) method and raw data from previous research in measuring the international competitiveness of world container ports. Ports have to cope with rapid changes in shipping environments. In order for a port to compete in the global market, it must provide port services promptly and accurately. Basically, there are two approaches to measuring the international competitiveness of a container port. First, there is the traditional productivity analysis method, which analyzes productivity based on the container port's facilities (efficiency, selectivity, land availability), and by its general capacity (handling ability, storage capacity, terminal productivity). Second there is multi-attribute utility analysis, which considers several elements including the reasons for selecting particular container ports and factors determining international competitiveness. This paper follows the first method (traditional productivity analysis) and extends the limitation of previous studies by using the DEA method newly, and suggesting: the relative productive efficiency of container ports. The main results of this paper are as follows: First, the results of the DEA analysis in terms of world container ports matches that of a previous study (Jun et al., 1993) at a level of 35%. The low ratio is due to the constrained set of input-output elements, the result of only twenty container ports being analyzed in this paper. Second, the result of the DEA analysis in terms of North-East Asia's container ports matches with that of a previous study (Ha, 1996) at a level of 100 percent. Therefore we can conclude that the DEA analysis is the best measurement method for international competitiveness. Policy implications for this study are as follows: First, when port authorities want to measure the international competition power of container ports and enhance their productive efficiency, they should consider the traditional method and newly introduce the DEA method. Second, according to the analysis results of the DEA method, pen authorities should recommend benchmarking ports as reference ports in order to enhance the productive efficiency of container ports that show an efficiency score of below 1.
