In the world total boron reserve rating, Turkey is taken place on the first rank, meeting the demand of refined mineral and main boron chemicals. Development of the new boron products and production technologies, spreading the using area of the boron are the study topics which must be finically discussed. In this study, with the help of colemanite taken in ratio as (0%, 7.5%, 12.5%, and 17.5%) by being mixed by the cement, surfaces of the pumice aggregates have been covered. Permeability of the samples has been investigated by producing lightweight concrete with 400 dose with the help of aggregates covered with colemanite. For this, the experiments of water absorption, capillary water absorption, depth of penetration of water under pressure and rapid chloride permeability have been performed. In addition, analyses of the thin section of covered and uncovered pumice aggregates and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) have been investigated. When the control samples produced with the covered aggregates and concretes produced with colemanite covered aggregates are compared each other, it has been determined that special lightweight concretes whose values of capillary water absorption experiment, depth of penetration of water under pressure experiment and rapid chloride permeability are low can be produced.
1. In the rabbit and the dog, the blood pressure response to water extract and methanol extract obtained from Atractylodes rhizoma alb'a was investigated. 2. Water extract and methanol extract, when administered into the rabbit and the dog by the route of vein, produced fall of the blood pressure. 3. The depressor response of the rabbit to water extract and methanol extract was not affected by $Avicel{\circledR}$, propranolol and atropine. 4. The depressor response by water extract and methanol extract in the rabbit was not affected by guanethidine, but water extract and methanol extract produced elevation of blood pressure in this rabbit. 5. Pretreatment of rabbit with chlorisendamine or phenoxybenzamine weakened the depressor response to water extract and methanol extract, and the both extracts produced secondary elevation of blood pressure in this rabbit. 6. The pressor response of the chlorisondamine-treated rabbit to water extract and methanol extract was not affected by atropine. 7. Water extract decreased the pressor action of tyramine and depressor action of pilocarpine and isoproterenol, but did not affect the blood pressure response of nor einephrine, angiotensin and dimethylpehnyl piperazinium iodide(DMPP).

A by-product, waste sludge water produced from ready mixed concrete(remicon) factories may affect our environmental contamination if it is discharged without proper waste disposal. In Korea, all waste sludge water has been recycled in the way of mixing water of remicon, but the quality of the concrete then produced can be deteriorated, so it might cause slump loss or irregular compressive strength. In this study, waste sludge water is divided into two parts, remicon sludge and residual water in order to make it's property more stable. Then, the remicon sludge and high-alkaline residual water were used as admixture and alkali activator respectively. In this paper we research about quality of with remicon sludge and residual water and performed the fundamental properties of cement matrix mixed with remicon sludge and residual water.
The aim of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics of makgeolli that was produced by using different percentages (control, 3%, 5%, 7%, 9% by rice weight) of Angelica gigas Nakai water extracts during fermentation at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Yeast cell count in makgeolli steadily increased and showed the highest value at day 4 of fermentation, since then, the count decreased consistently. The final alcohol contents were higher than 15% in all samples. Soluble contents and antioxidation activity were significantly increased in percentage as Angelica water extracts increased (p<0.05). As the amount of Angelica water extracts increased, total polyphenol contents increased as well. Soluble contents and total polyphenol contents were increased according to the fermentation period. Total acidity increased up to day 3, but slowly decreased afterwards. However, the pH rapidly decreased by day 3, but then increased steadily. Reducing sugar amount was increased sharply by day 2 of fermentation and then, diminished gradually. Hunter's color value was not significantly different among samples however, they were significantly different between day 2 samples of fermentation and day 3 or more samples (p<0.05). In sensory evaluations, the sample produced using 5% Angelica water extracts received the highest score in herbal flavor, herbal taste, sourness, sweetness, and overall acceptance. Makgeolli using Angelica gigas Nakai water extracts showed excellent characteristics in antioxidative activity and higher total polyphenol content. Makgeolli produced using 5% Angelica water extracts received the highest score in sensory evaluation. Therefore, makgeolli produced using 5% Angelica water extracts was considered to be the most suitable for manufacturing makgeolli.
As of 2003, construction waste has been produced at the level of 130,614.8 tons/day, in which the amount of waste concrete was 92,639.1 tons/day and accounted for about 66.4% of the amount of construction waste. Waste concrete is mainly produced in construction work and civil engineering work. Especially, road surface crushing method using a large amount of water requires thorough management of concrete wastewater. The aim of this study was to analyze water pollution due to concrete wastewater generated in repair of bridge deck using road surface crushing equipment and to suggest reasonable countermeasures for solve the problem. In this study, it was surveyed current conditions of produced concrete wastewater in bridge deck repair, analyzed physical features of concrete wastewater, expected effects of water pollution on inflow rivers if it is not treated, established treatment plan of water pollution by categories, and calculated capacity of each treatment process and required amount of necessary chemicals. As a result of sampling wastewater generated in field sites and testing it at a lab scale, it was revealed that the original wastewater was produced in removing concrete from bridge deck slabs using surface crushing equipment whose pH was 12.53, CODMn was 12.910mg/L, SS was 547.0mg/L, and other heavy metals were included in extremely small quantities.
Harmful algae blooms have become a serious environmental problem in major river basins in Korea. They are known to produce various algal organic matters (AOMs) including intracellular organic matters (IOMs) and extracellular organic matters (EOMs). Generally AOMs cannot be easily removed by coagulation/flocculation process in conventional drinking water plants. AOMs produced by blue-green algae also include various toxins such as Microcystins, Anatoxin-a, and Saxitoxin known to have harmful effects on living organisms in aquatic environment. In this study, toxic effects of EOMs produced by three different algae species (Microcystis sp., Anabaena sp., and Oscillatoria sp.) on zebrafish were investigated using electroencephalography (EEG) recording method, a technology for recording brain activity. Electroencephalographic changes in zebrafish revealed that a low EOM had a negative effect on zebrafish compared to both Anabaena sp. and Oscillatoria sp. at 30 ppm EOM exposures. This result might be due to Microcystins present in EOMs produced by Microcystis sp. As a result of power spectrum density anallysis, exposure to EOMs produced by Microcystis sp. caused a state of vigilance in zebrafish. This EEG based toxicity test can be used to examine effects of harmful materials at low levels on living organisms in an aquatic system.
In pseudoperonospora humuli, the cause of hop downy mildew, environmental and host factors affecting laboratory production of oospore were examined. After 7 days incubation of leaf disk inoculated with sporangia on water, additional incubations were carried out under different conditions of temperature and moisture. Oospore production was also compared between very susceptible (Nugget) and resistant (Fuggle) hop cultivars. Oospores were not produced at 18$^{\circ}C$ regardless of other incubation conditions. Leaf disks failed to produce oospore when incubated on water for up to 18 days at 8$^{\circ}C$. No oospores formed on infection sites without necrosis. However, abundant oospores were produced at necrotized infection sites when inoculated leaf disk incubated on dry filter paper for 5 days at 8$^{\circ}C$. Both susceptible and resistant hop cultivars produced abundant oospores. In the measurement of optimal temperature for oospore production, oospores were produced at 6 to 12$^{\circ}C$ Most abundant oospores were produced at 8$^{\circ}C$. We suggest that proper combination of low temperature, dryness and necrosis may be a critical environmental factors for oospore production of P. humuli.
Maintaining a good quality of drinking water produced through appropriate water treatment processes to the tap is as important as improving water quality in a water treatment plant (WTP). The quality of most tap water, however, does not have the same quality as that of the water produced in a WTP due to the contamination in the distribution system while they are delivered through pipes and water tanks. It is very important to maintain water quality in distribution system to water suppliers for consumer's health and safety. Furthermore, it is not possible to investigate the water quality of all points in the distribution system because the system has a wide area and very complex hydraulic characteristics. One economic solution to prevent water quality in distribution system from being deteriorated is monitoring several points that might have the least water quality in the distribution system. If the quality of water of the monitoring points selected by proper ways is better than the quality index of Drinking Water Quality Guidelines suggested by Korean Ministry of Environment, all other points in the distribution system would be safe to drink.
In this study, we investigated the appropriate conditions to extract acidic polysaccharide and to prepare red ginseng extract being rich in acidic polysaccharide from red tail ginseng marc produced after manufacturing alcoholic extract from red tail ginseng. Amount of acidic polysaccharide in red tail ginseng marc was about 11%. The best condition for the extraction of acidic polysaccharide from the marc was using of 3~5 mg of $\alpha$-amylase/g residue/15 ml of distilled water, and the amount of acidic polysaccharide in water extract of the residue treated with $\alpha$-amylase was about 27%. So, it is possible to manufacture red ginseng extract being rich in acidic polysaccharide using water extract of red tail ginseng alcoholic residue as extraction solvent. From the above results, we suggest that red tail ginseng residue produced by manufacturing alcoholic extract of red tail ginseng has high potencies in the utilization of waste material.
This study is conducted to investigate the characteristics of cracks depending on the different mixture rates of calcium hydroxide and distilled water in high-strength concrete, which is substituted with a high percentage of blast-furnace slag, by using specimens produced under different heating temperatures: 600℃, 800℃, and 1000℃, respectively. According to the results of the study, the specimen heated under the temperature of 600℃ did not produce cracks; the specimen heated under 800℃ produced little cracks and showed no difference between calcium hydroxide and distilled water; whereas the specimen heated under 1000℃ produced cracks larger than 5mm on average in the case of calcium hydroxide, compared to distilled water.
