Matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 is considered important in tissue destruction in periodontitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of smoking on MMP-9 in the gingival crevicular fluid(GCF). GCF samples in upper incisors area from 332 male subjects were collected after the informed consent. The dental examination included the assessment of oral hygiene, gingival inflammation and probing pocket depth. A quantitative assessment of MMP-9 levels in GCF was performed utilizing and immunological procedure. The mean MMP-9 concentrations found in GCF of smokers(30.86 ng/ml) and quit-smokers(29.82 ng/ml) differed from non-smokers(11.33 ng/ml), adjusted by age, gingival index and Community periodontal index(p<0.001). Smoking seems to influence MMP-9 in GCF regardless of gingival inflammation and age. It means smoking can destruct the periodontal tissue for itself.

In this paper, we propose a horizontal/vertical calibration kit for calibrating a vector network analyzer(VNA) to measure the vertical connector pin. If the conventional calibration kit is used, we should change the arm for a probe or need an assistant device and it takes a long time. In addition there is a risk of precision degradation caused by the position change of the probe tip sensitive to the surroundings. We suggest a 4-port vertical calibration kit to make up for the aforementioned shortcomings. The calibration kit was manufactured for the SOLT calibration method. 'Short', 'Open', and 'Load' are available in the horizontal plane, 'Thru' is available not only in the horizontal plane on the two planes of a PCB, but in the vertical plane between the two planes according to the positions of the probes. We complemented the conventional calibration kit to make a vertical calibration kit to be used for the vertical measurement method. We compared and analysed their reflection/transfer characteristics of the SOLT calibration standards of the proposed calibration kit and conventional one, we get a ${\pm}0.1$ dB differences of transfer characteristics in the range from 300 kHz to 8.5 GHz. In order to demonstrate usefulness, and we performed a case study for horizontal and vertical cases, and compared the results of the proposed calibration kit and conventional one.
Two insecticides, fenobucarb (36, 12 ppm) and imidacloprid (0.7, 0.4 ppm) were treated on rice seedling roots by root uptake method with different dipping time (1, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 hrs). This study was performed to elucidate the correlation between insecticidal activity and feeding behavior of Nilaparvata lugens using EPG (electrical penetration graph). EPG waveforms are recorded for 4 hours and classified into six waveforms. In the correlation between root uptake and corrected mortality, both insecticides showed higher corrected mortality as higher doses and as longer root uptake times. In the analysis of waveforms, N. lugens showed longer nonprobe time but shorter phloem feeding time at a higher dose. It was also showed the same result as longer the root uptake times. Therefore, it showed the correlation between insecticidal activity by root uptake time and both EPG waveforms (non-probing time and phloem feeding time).

After treatment with imidacloprid, there were clear differences in the time to the first reaction of Myzus persicae among the concentrations treated. The time taken for the proboscis of the aphids to penetrate, during the recording plants increased as the imidacloprid concentration increased. Imidacloprid concentration inflow into a leaf was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography, and the residues of the imidacloprid varied slightly with the different concentrations treated. However, the inflow rates of this insecticide into a leaf increased as the dipping times increased. Furthermore, it was shown that there was no relationship in inflow concentration between the concentrations and times of treatment. However, the concentration in the leaf differed according to the dipping time. Judging from the fact that the first reaction behavior against imidacloprid displayed at an inflow concentration of 0.32-0.35 mg/L, we concluded that inflow concentrations causing the first reaction of the aphids to the insecticide were much lower than the concentration treated. The general feeding characteristics of the aphids indicated that xylem and/or phloem feeding behavior continued after a series of probing behaviors and stylet activity during the first 3 h from the start of EPG recording. After 90 min treatment with imidacloprid, feeding behavior over the next 30 min indicated a significant increase in the withdrawal of the stylet from the plant at all treated concentrations. Xylem and/or phloem feeding patterns were significantly decreased during this time. In particular, the proportion of xylem feeding differed according to the concentration of imidacloprid.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus acidophilus V-20onthe replication of periodontal pathogens, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. When A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis were incubated alone and in the combination with L. acidophilus V-20, the viable cell numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis were compared between those cultures. The effect of S. mutans, E. durans, and L. lactis on the replication of A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis was also evaluated. The change of periodontal indexes(probine depth, gingival index, GCF volume) and the viable cell numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans and black pigmented bacteroides in subgingival plaque sample were evaluated following gargling of fermented milk made from L. acidophilus V-20 for 1 month on patients with periodontal disease in maintenance phase. In the mixed culture of L. acidophilus V-20 and A. actinomycetemcomitans or P. gingivalis, the replication of A. actinomycetemcomitans or P. gingivalis wascompletely inhibited. But in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and hydrogen peroxide-nonproducing Lactobacillus casei, the viable ceil numbers of P. gingivaliswas not decreased when compared with the numbers in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and L. acidophilus V-20. In the mixed culture of A. actinomycetemcomitans and S. mutans, E. durans, or L. lactis, the viable cell number of A. actinomycetemcomitans was not almost changed when compared with the numbers in the culture of A. actinomycetemcomitans alone. And in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and E. durans or L. lactis, the viable cell numbers of P. gingivaliswas not almost changed compared with the counts in the culture of P. gingivalis alone. But the replication of P. gingivalis was completely inhibited in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and S. mutans. When the change of periodontal indexes following gargling of fermented milk was compared with baseline, probing depth and gingival index were not changed, but GCF volume was significantly decreased(p<0.05). And when the viable ceil numbers of microorganisms in subgingival plaque sample were compared with baseline, total viable ceil number was almost unchanged and the viable cell numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans and black pigmented bacteroides were significantly decreased(p<0.05). These results suggest that L. acidophilus V-20 inhibit the replication of A. actinomycetemcomitans and black pigmented bacteroides by the formation of hydrogen peroxide.

In this study, we have investigated the photoinduced birefringence(PB), ${\Delta}n$ in chalcogenide $As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ thin film with a He-Ne Laser at 633nm as In this study, we have investigated the photoinduced birefringence(PB), ${\Delta}n$ in chalcogenide $As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ thin film with a He-Ne Laser at 633nm as a pumping beam and a semiconductor laser at 780nm as a probing beam. The PB for the variable thickness of thin films was investigated. The thickness of the thin films is about $0.4{\mu}m$, $0.92{\mu}m$, $1.4{\mu}m$, $2.0{\mu}m$, respectively. The experimental result of PB in chalcogenide thin films was represented higher PB in the thickness of thin film, $0.92{\mu}m$. It was meant to represent higher PB in the thickness of the film that was made closely the optimal thickness, $0.96{\mu}m$. The optimal thickness of thin film, $0.96{\mu}m$ was calculated by the penetration depth of the pumping light Also, the PB in thickness of $0.92{\mu}m$ was obtained almost two times higher 0.15 than other thickness of thin films.
This study has been done to prove that keratinized gingiva is required for the periodontal health and to analyse the adequate width that is necessary. Until now, the study on frenum has been documented on changing its location. But the location or the formation of the frenum has not been reported. This experiment has used 173 patients from the department of periodontology of Dankook University to investigate the width of keratinized gingiva, the formation of the frenum and its location for the frequency. This study also looks into the relationship between the gingival recession and the structure of the frenum, and affects they have on periodontal health. The width of the keratinized gingiva in the mandible has been found to be highest in the lateral incisor than in the central incisor. The width decreased from the canine to the first premolar until it reached the molar. The interproximal area of the mandibular frenum was 77.9%, which was greater than the frequency (22.1%) from the midline of the teeth. The highest frequency of frenum was at 30.6% in between the both central incisor then second greatest at 20.6% in between the right canine and the right first premolar. Frenum was not found in between the second premolar and the distal area. In the morphology of the frenum, it was found that 43.4% out of 551 parts were found to be a single narrow frenum, and the double or triple ligamented form of the complex frenum were found in similar frequency of 237 parts, but the broad frenum was rarely frequent. The incisal area was popular mostly with the single narrow frenum, the left premolar area frequented 57.4%, and the right premolar frequented 64.7%. Because the distance between the frenum apex and the gingival margin measured to be about 5mm or greater, the frenum apex started in the mucogingival junction and not just below the keratinized gingiva. In the 551 area investigated, 48.3% of gingiva showed recession, incisal area had recession the least at 44.9%, right buccal side at 47.4%, and right buccal side frequented the highest at 52.1%. The teeth that showed recession recessed at the average of 2.151.0.mm and the left canine showed the greatest amount of gingival recession. In the investigation to find out if the keratinized gingiva and the gingiva recession had mutually related somehow, the width of keratinized gingiva showed no affect on the probing depth, but had affected in the gingiva recession. This investigation showed that the gingival recession and the morphology of the frenum related in that, the single narrow frenum had recessed the least and the broad frenum recessed the most. With this analysis, a conclusion was drawn that the morphology of the frenum had affected in the gingical recession.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect a chewable tablet containing sodium flouride and lauroyl sodium sulfate on removing plaque and inhibiting gingival inflammation. A randomized parallel study was designed. 100 voluteers participated in the study. There were two test groups each with 30 subject. Test group A was instructed to brush once in the morning, and to use the tablet once in the afternoon and once in the evening. Test group B was instructed to use the tablet three times a day without brushing. There were two control groups each with 20 subjects. Control group A was instructed to brush once in the morning only. Control group B was instructed not to brush all. Two weeks before the test period, the subjects received through tooth cleaning and polishing. At baseline, GI, PI, BOP, and GCF of the Ramfjord teeth were measured in all groups. Bacteria culture was done with the plaque sampled from tooth with the deepest pocket. After 5 days, clinical indices were measured and the bacterial culture was repeated. Control group B was dropped from the study after this period. All the other groups remained and the indices and the culture was repeated after 2 weeks, and 3weeks. Also whether the oral mucosa showed signs of irritation was monitored throughout the test period. Test group A showed less PI, GI, BOP, probing depth, GCF than test group B or control group A. Especially, PI and the BOP was significantly less than that of the group that was instructed to brush once a day. This implies that the added use of this tablet aids in plaque removal in people who brush just once a day. Test group A showed increase of cocci, decrease of motile rods, and decrease of spirochetes after 14-21 days. And this was significantly different from the control group A. At no time of the test period did any of the subjects show signs of irritation of the oral mucosa or adverse reactions. Following conclusions could be obtained from this study. This chewable tablet for enhanced oral hygiene could be used as an adjunct to oral hygiene in people who do not brush adequately. The use of this tablet decreased the number of subgingival bacteria, and this could be effective in plaque removal and for prevention of gingival inflammation.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of scaling and root planing combined with local application of 2% minocycline gel to patients with moderate to advanced chronic adult periodontitis. 27 healthy patients with moderate to advanced chronic adult periodontitis were enrolled in the study. The quadrants that had 2 or more teeth with $5{\sim}8mm$ probing pocket depth and radiographic evidence of alveolar bone loss were selected and divided into test side and control side according to the splitmouth design. All patients received standardized oral hygiene instructions at the beginning of the study. Subsequently scaling and root plaining was performed on all remaining teeth until 0 week. The 2% minocycline gel was applied to periodontal pocket at 0, 1, 2, 3week in the test side. The normal saline was irrigated subgingivally for about 30 seconds in the control side. The clinical and microbiological analysis was carried out at 0, 4, 8, and 12weeks. The results of this st udy were as follows; 1.2% minocycline gel delivered subgingivally as an adjunct to scaling and root planing provided benefit in reducing sulcular bleeding index and pocket depth than the use of normal saline. 2. The relative proportion of cocci and non-motile bacteria was increased in the test and control groups with time, and there was no statistically significantdifference between two groups. 3. The proportion of spirochetes was slowly reduced in the control group, but, inthe test group, they were remarkably reduced from the 4th week, and there was a statistically significant difference between two groups. 4. In both groups, the relative proportion of motile rods was notably decreasedat the beginning of the study, and remained until 12th week in the test group, but, in the control group, they were slowly increased from the 4th weekand finally similar to that of the initial examination. In conclusion, local application of 2% minocycline gel may be effective in the clinical and microbiological aspects as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in periodontal disease sites.
Refractory periodontitis manifest progressive attachment loss in a rapid and unrelenting manner regardless of the type or frequency of therapy applied. The purpose of this study was ta evaluate the relation between the level of cytokines in GCF and periodontopathic microflora with disease activity of refractory periodontitis. Selection of patients with refractory periodontitis (7 males, 3 females) were made by long term clinical observation including conventional clinical history and parameters. Teeth that showed pocket depth greater than 6mm were selected as sample teeth. Subjects were examined at baseline and after 3 months. Prior to baseline test, individual acrylic stent was fabricated. Reference grooves were made on each sample tooth site. Pocket depth and attachment loss were measured by Florida Probe. Gingival index was measured at 4 sites each sample teeth. Disease activity was defined as attachment loss of ${\ge}$ 2.1mm, as determined by sequential probing and tolerance method. The pattern and amount of alveolar bone resorption was observed with quantitative digital subtraction image processing radiography. Morphological analysis of subgingival bacteria was taken by phase contrast microscopy. Predominant cultivable bacterial distribution and frequency were compared between disease-active and disease-inactive site using immunofluorescence microscopy and selective microbial culturing. Levels of $interleukin-l{\beta}$, 2, 4, 6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ in GCF and blood serum sample were quantified by ELISA. In active sites, P. intermedia was significantly increased to compare with inactive site. $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-2, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ in GCF were increased in active sites and IL-2 in serum was increased in active patients significantly. Alveolar bone loss in active site was correlated with $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-2 in GCF. And loss of attachment in active site was correlated with IL-2 in GCF. These results demonstrate that IL-2 in serum, $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-2, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ in GCF, P, intermedia might be used as possible predictors of disease activity in refractory periodontitis before it is clinically expressed as attachment loss and quantitative alveolar bone change.
