This paper deals with a numerical study of the tribological contact stress distributions of elastomeric lip seah for oscillating shafts when the sealing interference and band width between the lip edge of contact seals the shaft are present. Using the finite element method, the contact stress and band width of scraper seals rare analyzed for the sealing interference including some nonlinearities such as geometrical nonlinearity, material nonlinearity and nonlinear contact boundary condition. The FEM results showed that the contact stress concentrated on the contacting lip zone between the contacting edge of lip and the shaft for the increased interference. In double lip scraper seals, the maximum contact stress of the dust lip, which is used to exclude foreign contaminants, is six times higher than that of the primary sealing lip, which is used to contain lubricants.
To assess the electrostatic interaction of surfaces at the triple contact line, the electrostatic field is analyzed by using the finite element method. The Helmholtz free energy is used as a functional which should be minimized under an equilibrium condition. The numerical results are compared with the nonlinear analytical solution for a two-dimensional charged interface and linear solution for a wedge shaped geometry, which shows fairly good agreement. The method is applied to the analysis of electrostatic influence on the contact angle on a charged substrate. The excess free energy found to increase drastically as the contact angle approaches to zero. This excess free energy Plays an opposite role to the Primary electrocapillary effect, as the contact angle gets smaller. This enables an alternative explanation for the contact-angle saturation phenomenon occurring in electrical control of surface tension and contact angle.
In nuclear power plants, ferritic low alloy steel components were connected with austenitic stainless steel piping system through alloy 82/182 butt weld. There have been incidents recently where cracking has been observed in the dissimilar metal weld. Alloy 82/182 is susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking. Weld-induced residual stress is main factor for crack growth. Therefore exact estimation of residual stress is important for reliable operating. This paper presents residual stress computation performed by 6" safety & relief nozzle. Based on 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional finite element analyses, effect of welding variables on residual stress variation is estimated for sensitivity analysis.
A new model predicting the nonlinear basic creep behaviour of concrete structures subjected to high multi-axial stresses is proposed. It combines a model based on the thermodynamic framework of the elasto-plastic continuum damage theory for time-independent material behaviour and a rheological model describing phenomenologically the long-term delayed deformation. Strength increase due to ageing is regarded. The general 3D solution for the creep theory is derived from a rate-type form of the uniaxial formulation by the assumption of associated creep flow and a theorem of energy equivalence. The model is able to reproduce linear primary creep as well as secondary and tertiary creep stages under high compressive stresses. For concrete in tension a simple viscoelastic formulation is applied. The material law is then incorporated into a finite element solution procedure for analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Numerical examples of uniaxial creep tests and concrete members show excellent agreement with experimental results.

A mathematical modeling for the drying process of hygroscopic porous media, such as wood, has been developed in the past decades. The governing equations for wood drying consist of three conservation equations with respect to the three state variables, moisture content, temperature and air density. They are involving simultaneous, highly coupled heat and mass transfer phenomena. In recent, the equations were extended to account for material heterogeneity through the density of the wood and via the density variation of the material process, capillary pressure, absolute permeability, bound water diffusivity and effective thermal conductivity. In this paper, we investigate the drying behavior for the three primary variables of the drying process in terms of control volume finite element method to the heterogeneous transport model on one-dimensional grid.
This paper presents the results of a study on the effects of pounding at expansion joints of concrete bridges under earthquake ground motions. An engineering approach, rather than continuum mechanics, is emphasized. First, the sensitivity analysis of the gap element stiffness is performed. Second, usefulness of the analysis method for simulation of pounding phenomena is demonstrated. Third, the effects of pounding on the ductility demands measured in terms of the rotation of column ends are investigated. Two-dimensional FE analysis using a bilinear hysterestic model for bridge substructure joints and a nonlinear gap element for the expansion joint is performed on a realistic bridge with an expansion joint. Effects of the primary factors on the ductility demand such as gap sizes and characteristics of earthquake ground motion are investigated through a parametric study. The major conclusions are that pounding effect is generally negligible on the ductility demand for wide practical ranges of gap size and peak ground acceleration, but is potentially significant at the locations of impact.
The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) connects the two parallel windings in parallel with a ferromagnetic core. We suggest that the double quench flux-lock type SFCL should add a third winding. We analyzed characteristics of the fault current and the peak current using the quench of the high-Tc superconducting element. The proposed SFCL's inductances of a primary winding and the third winding were fixed and the amplitude of inductance of the secondary winding was changed. We found that the fault current can be more effectively controlled through the analysis of the equivalent circuit and the short-circuit tests.
This paper provides V-factor estimation under combined mechanical and thermal load for circumferential cracks. Results are based on finite element analyses and effect of types and magnitudes of the thermal stress, crack geometry, the loading mode and plastic strain hardening on variations of the V-factor are investigated. The results of finite element analyses are compared with R6 values. As a result, it is shown that R6 gives generally conservative results. The conservatism is especially increased for the combination of large mechanical and thermal load. As a result, new estimation method which uses failure assessment line in R6 is proposed for V-factor and gives less conservative results.
Finite element analysis was carried out to investigate the integrity and reliability of boiler module during sea transportation. The boiler module was supported by steel structure to relieve the instantaneous shock from oceanic wave and its primary parts were strengthened with several reinforcements. Finned tube walls which were used in the furnace wall were assumed as orthotropic plates having equivalent material properties. The bank tubes were also equivalently modeled in accordance with ASME B31.1 for the convenience of finite element modeling. The calculation results were compared with the yield stress of the material. In particular, the bank tube stress, which was evaluated by converting the calculated stresses in equivalent tubes into those in original tubes by using the ratio of diameter, was also examined with yield stress.
In this study, the design program for optimal wire batch around service line is made to improve the dielectric strength at the primary winding using Finite Element Method. The automatic convergence algorithm for finding of limit object value using loop circulation method is developed to make the optimal design simulator The modulation method is suggested to make division time faster which is very important for full program efficiency. As a result, the program execution time is reduced about 32% and the optimal wire batch design is obtained.
