The objective of this study was to clarify the possibility of adsorption trichloroethylene (TCE) of pretreated granular activated carbon (GAC). The chemical solution used for the acidic treatment was phosphoric acid. In addition, the effect of ultrasound on GAC assessed in this experiments. It was observed that the adsorption of TCE were different based on pH value of pretreated GAC. However, natural water such as groundwater has various factors like ionic strength and hardness etc. Therefore, more laboratory work is needed to study about pretreated GAC.
These studies were carried out to investigate the effects of Ohotang water extract on the inhibitory contractile action of acetylcholine in control rat. The results of these were as follows; 1. Contractile force of acetylcholine from trachea smooth muscle in control rat was significantly inhibited by Ohotang. 2. Dose-response of acetylcholine pretreated Ohotang in control rat was significantly inhibited. 3. Inhibitory contractile action of acetylcholine pretreated propranolol in control rat was significantly inhibited by Ohotang. 4. Contractile force of acetylcholine pretreated indomethacin from trachea smooth muscle in control rat was not significantly changed. 5. Inhibitory contractile action of acetylcholine pretreated methylene blue in control rat was not significantly changed.
Supercritical $CO_2$ pretreatment before dehydration leads to a faster dehydration rate. The best supercritical $CO_2$ pretreatment conditions for the most effective dehydration were $45^{\circ}C$, 25 MPa and $55^{\circ}C$, 25 MPa. Increasing pressure of the supercritical $CO_2$ pretreatment system tended to accelerate the dehydration rate more than increasing temperature did. Samples pretreated at higher temperatures and pressures showed greater shrinking and pore distribution on scanning electron microscopy. Control samples maintained their cell walls, whereas samples pretreated at higher temperatures and pressures showed more cell disruption, and more pores were observed. Pore sizes of control and pretreated samples were about 100 and $70{\sim}80\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Samples pretreated at higher temperatures and pressures had smaller pores and a denser distribution.
For the enhancement of the nucleation density of the diamond film, we introduced the cyclic process. The cyclic process was carried out by the on/off control of CH$_4$ flow rate for a relatively short time (10 min), compared with the total reaction time (6 h). Prior to depositing the diamond film, we made the pretreated glass substrate via the unidirectional scratch using ∼l $\mu\textrm{m}$ size diamond powders. Diamond films were deposited on the pretreated glass substrate in a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. We observed the enhancement of the nucleation density of the diamond films caused by the cyclic process. Detailed surface morphologies of the substrate were investigated after the cyclic process. Based on these results, we discussed the cause for the enhancement of the nucleation density on the pretreated glass substrate by the cyclic process.
The three domestic natural zeolites(Yong dong-ri (Y), Daesin-ri (D), Seogdong-ri (S)) harvested in Kyeongju-shi and Pohang-shi, Kyungsangbug-Do, were pretreatd with each of the NaOH, $Ca(OH)_2$ and NaOH following HCl solutions, and the removal performances of divalent haevy metals(Cu, Mn, Pb, and Sr) for natural and pretreated zeolites were investigated and compared in the single and mixed solutions. The natural zeolite-heavy metal system attained the final equilibrium plateau within 20 min, irrespective of initial heavy metal concentration. The heavy metal uptakes increased with increasing initial heavy metal concentration and pH. The heavy metal uptakes for natural zeolites decreased in the following sequences : D>Y>S among the natural zeolites; Pb>Cu>Sr>Mn among the heavy metals. The pretreated zeolites showed higher heavy metal removal performances than natural zeolites and decreased in the order of NaOH, NaOH following HCl, $Ca(OH)_2$ treatment among the pretreatment methods. The heavy metal ion exchange capacity by natural and pretreated zeolites was described either by Freundlich equation or Langmuir equation, but it followed the former better than the latter. The heavy metal uptakes for natural zeolites decreased in the mixed solution, in comparing with those in the single solution and especially, the manganese uptake decreased greatly in the mixed solution. The pretreated zeolites showed the improved removal performances of heavy metals in the mixed solution than in the single solution and the heavy metal uptakes by those in the mixed solution showed the same trends in the single solution among the chemical treatment methods and heavy metals.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of liver damage on toluene metabolism in rats pretreated with carbon tetachloride. Liver damage in rats was induced by administration of 0.1ml of carbon tetrachloride per 100g of body wight intraperitoneally every day for four weeks except the last day before sacrifice. One day before sacrifice, toluene was administered to the animals instead of carbon tetrachloride. Rats were sacrificed at the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th week after the first administration of carbon tetachloride. Based on the histopathological findings, liver weight and serum alanine aminotransferase, the $CCl_4$-preteated group was found to have gradual severe liver damage. Especially the degree of liver injury became increasingly severe throughout the whole course of the experiment. The contnts of hippuric acid in urine lower in the all groups pretreated with $CCl_4$than that of the control. The contents of hepatic cytochrome P450(CYP), benzylalcohol dehydrogenase and benzaldehyde dehydrogenase activities were decreased in $CCl_4$-pretreated rats than those of the control. The $CCl_4$treated animals showed the gradual decreased activities of these enzyme as injection times elapsed. Km values of the benzylalcohol dehydrogenase in pooled liver samples from $CCl_4$-pretreated or control groups were similar. On the other hand, Vmax values of the $CCl_4$-pretreated group was lower than of the control. Therefore, it can be concluded that reduction of the toluene metabolism in damaged rat liver induced with $CCl_4$was due to the inhibition of CYP content, bezylalcohol and benzaldehyde dehydrogenase activities which related with toluene metabolic enzyme system.
In the sequence of carbon tetrachloride hepatotoxicity, increased serum levels of a number of enzymes have been demonstrated in experimental animals. These observations, therefore, have served to help in detecting hepatic injury. The serological influence of chlorpromazine (CPZ) and iproniazid on the acute $CCl_4$ poisoning was executed in this investigation taking use of 6 albino rabbits (around 2 kg b.w.) in each group. By measuring of blood sugar level (Nelson-Somogyi method), S-GOT and S-GPT activities (Reitman-Frankel method), the pharmacological effects of the drugs was evaluated setting pretreated groups against the control. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The intramuscular injection of $CCl_4$ led to increase the blood sugar level in first 3 hours and, after that, to decrease reasonably. But CPZ-pretreated group showed a tendency of increasing in compare with the control, and iproniazid-pretreated group inhibited evidently. 2. In S-GOT activity, the increased level was induced by $CCl_4$ in control. And CPZ-pretreated group showed a increased level until first day and decreased rapidly. But this property inhibited inhibited significantly by pretreating with iproniazid. 3. Although a single dose of $CCl_4$ increased the S-GPT activity, the more increasing trend was observed in CPZ-pretreated group. But these tendencies depressed remarkably in the iproniazid-pretreated group. It seemed to be attributed not to defend the $CCl_4$ toxicity but to be suppressed the enzyme systems in the liver by iproniazid that the blood sugar level and serum transaminase activities was decreased significantly in pretreating with iproniazid.
To evaluate the effects of chemical pretreatments of lignocellulosic biomass on enzymatic hydrolysis process, Populus euramericana was pretreated for 1 hr with 1% sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) at $150^{\circ}C$ and 1% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at $160^{\circ}C$, respectively. Before the enzymatic hydrolysis, each pretreated sample was subjected to drying process and thus finally divided into four subgroups; dried or non-dried acid pretreated samples and dried or non-dried alkali pretreated samples and chemical and physical properties of them were analyzed. Biomass degradation by acid pretreatment was determined to 6% higher compared to alkali pretreatment. By the action of acid ca. 24.5% of biomass was dissolved into solution, while alkali degraded ca. 18.6% of biomass. However, reverse results were observed in delignification rates, in which alkali pretreatment released 2% more lignin fragment from biomass to the solution than acid pretreatment. Unexpectedly, samples after both pretreatments were determined to somewhat higher crystallinity than untreated samples. This result may be explained by selective disrupture of amorphous region in cellulose during pretreatments, thus the cellulose crystallinity seems to be accumulated in the pretreated samples. SEM images revealed that pretreated samples showed relative rough and partly cracked surfaces due to the decomposition of components, but the image of acid pretreated samples which were dried was similar to that of the control. In pore size distribution, dried acid pretreated samples were similar to the control, while that in alkali pretreated samples was gradually increased as pore diameter increased. The pore volume which increased by acid pretreatment rapidly decreased by drying process. Alkali pretreatment was much more effective on enzymatic digestibility than acid pretreatment. The sample after alkali pretreatment was enzymatically hydrolyzed up to 45.8%, while only 26.9% of acid pretreated sample was digested at the same condition. The high digestibility of the sample was also influenced to the yields of monomeric sugars during enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, drying process of pretreated samples affected detrimentally not only to digestibility but also to the yields of monomeric sugars.

A study was performed to evaluate an effect of toluene or ethanol pretreatment on the toluene metabolism. A slight liver damage in rats was induced by administration of 0.2 ml of toluene or 0.2 ml of 50% ethanol per 100 g of body weight intraperitoneally every other day for four weeks except the last day before sacrifice. One day before sacrifice, toluene was administered to rats pretreated ethanol or toluene and the control. Rats were sacrificed at the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th week after the first administration of xenobiotics mentioned above. Based on the histopathological findings, liver weight per body weight, serum alanine aminotransferase and hepatic glutathione content, toluene- or ethanol-pretreated groups showed the reversible liver injury. By the treatment of one dose of toluene, the contents of hippuric acid in urine was higher in the group pretreated with toluene or ethanol than control. The contents of cytochrome P-450, benzylalcohol dehydrogenase and benzaldehyde dehydrogenase activities were generally more increased in toluene- or ethanol-pretreated rats than control. $K_m$ values of the benzylalcohol dehydrogenase in pooled liver samples from toluene- and ethanol-pretreated groups were similar each other. $V_{max}$ values of toluene- or ethanol-pretreated group was higher than control. In conclusion, the toluene metabolism is accelerated in rats pretreated with toluene or ethanol.
