  • In this study, we evaluated the methylene blue (MB) adsorption potential of non-treated and UV-C pretreated bacterial biomass from aqueous solution. The UV-C pretreatment denature the biomass and has increased overall functional groups when compared to non-treated biomass. The biosorbent was exposed to various pH, biomass dose, and contact time. The results showed that the dried and UV-C pretreated biomass effectively removed MB within 30 min. Dried and UV-C pretreated biomass of Bacillus pseudomycoides JH 2-2 showed a adsorption of 858.2 and 1072.4 mg/g at optimum conditions (pH: 9.0, contact time: 30 min, biomass dose: 1 g/L). Similarly, dried and UV-C pretreated biomass of Citrobacter freundii JH 11-2 showed an adsorption 868.3 and 954 mg/g at optimum conditions (pH: 9.0, contact time: 10 min, biomass dose: 1.5 g/L). The changes in the functional groups of UV-C pretreated biomass could be responsible for enhanced adsorption of MB. The results obtained have shown that non-treated and UV-C pretreated biomass has a high adsorption capacity for MB dye and can be used as a low-cost biosorbent in wastewater treatments.

  • This experiment was designed to assess the physical and chemical properties of growing media substituted with a range of increasing concentrations of pretreated wood and to relate these properties to plant growth responses. For preparing the growing media, each material was combined with rural soil, peat, perlite and pretreated wood. Physicochemical properties studied were similar to ideal substrate ranges for plant growth on growing media, including pretreated wood. Physical properties were also well maintained over time. In comparison to plants growing in 100% rural soil, tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea) in the prepared growing media achieved better growth, especially when using the 50% rural soil + 50% PPW(peat + perlite + pretreated wood, 3:1:6(w/w/w)) and 30% rural soil + 70% PPW (peat + perlite + pretreated wood, 3:1:6(w/w/w)), and showed improved germination percentage. We confirmed the potential use of growing media, including pretreated wood. Furthermore, our results show a correlation among the physicochemical properties of tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea); physical properties were significantly influenced by germination and aerial parts. The root length of physicochemical properties was correlated with bulk density and organic compound (p<0.01).

  • In order to use leaf mustard Dolsan food preservative ingradient acidity, antimicrobial activity and colors were investigated during pretreatment of leaf mustard Dolsan. pH was remarkably decreased after 8 hours to pretreatment(extracted on shaking) of leaf mustard Dolsan, and no changes were observed after that time. pH of leaf part was higher than stalk after 8 hours storage. Titratable acidity was opposite tendency to the pH. pH was gradually decreased than initial stage during pretreatment of leaf mustard Dolsan at 30, 40 and 5$0^{\circ}C$. After 16 hours pretreatment, the higher pretreatment temperature was, the higher pH was, but after pretreatment for 48 hours, pH of sample pretreated at 5$0^{\circ}C$ was lower than that of sample pretreated at 40 $^{\circ}C$. Antimicrobial activity of leaf mustard Dolsan extract pretreated at 3$0^{\circ}C$ was the strongest of the samples pretreated at 30, 40 and 5$0^{\circ}C$, and that of stalk part was stronger than that of leaf part. L and time. L and b value was higher in the order of samples pretreated at 40, 50 and 3$0^{\circ}C$, and the lower pretreatment temperature was, the higher a value was. L value of stalk part was higher than that of leaf part, but a and b value of leaf part was higher than that of stalk part.

  • The Chlorhexidine(CHX) has been a widely used adjunt in periodontal therapy due to its bactericidal effect. In spite of the effects of CHX exhibits cytotoxic to human cells and delays granulation tissue formation. Therefore, understanding the effects of CHX on fibroblast attachment and cell growth will provide the rationale for its use during healing phase of periodontal surgery. This study was undertaken to examine the effects of standardized CHX-pretreated dentin slices and direct CHX exposure on human gingival fibroblasts. The results were as follow : 1. In experiment 1, there was a significant reduction in the number of fibroblast attachment in 0.12, 1%-pretreated groups relative to the control, 0.05%-pretreated groups(P<0.05). 2. In experiment 1, the control, 0.05%-pretreated groups showed considerable attachment and typical fibroblastic morphology, but 0.12, 1%-pretreated groups showed irregular, round-up (unattached) fibroblastic morphology. 3. In experiment 2, it appeared that all experimental groups exhibits significant inhibition of cell growth when compared with the control group.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of morin on the bioavailability of nimodipine after administering nimodipine (15 mg/kg) orally to rabbits either co-administered or pretreated with morin (2, 10 and 20 mg/kg). The plasma concentrations of nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin were increased significantly (p<0.05 at 10 mg/kg, p<0.01 at 20 mg/kg) compared with the control, but the plasma concentrations of nimodipine co-administered with morin were not significant. The areas under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and the peak concentrations $(C_{max})$ of the nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin were significantly higher (p<0.05 at 10 mg/kg, p<0.01 at 20 mg/kg), but only the $C_{max}$ of nimodipine coadministered with morin 10 mg/kg was increased significantly (p<0.05). The absolute bioavailability $(A.B\%)$ of nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin was significantly (p<0.05 at 10 mg/kg, p<0.01 at 20 mg/kg) higher $(54.1-65.0\%)$ than the control $(36.7\%)$. The increased bioavailability of nimodipine in the rabbits pretreated with morin might have been resulted from the morin, which inhibits the efflux pump P-glycoprotein and the first-pass metabolizing enzyme by cytochrome P-450 3A4 (CYP 3A4).

  • Melanose, caused by Diaporthe citri, is one of severe diseases in citrus, a major economic resource in Jeju island. To reduce the usage amount of organic synthetic fungicide, bio-sulfur was tested as an alternative chemical to control citrus melanose in the present study. Direct antifungal activity of bio-sulfur against D. citri was determined through in vitro experiment using artificial nutrient media. Disease severity of melanose on bio-sulfur pretreated citrus leaves was lower than that on untreated ones. To illustrate the mechanism of disease suppression by bio-sulfur, infection structures were observed with a fluorescent microscope and a scanning electron microscope. In fluorescent microscopic observation, most conidia rarely germinated. In addition, hyphal growth on leaves pretreated with bio-sulfur was inhibited compared to that on untreated ones. In scanning electron microscope images of bio-sulfur pretreated leaves, surfaces of most conidia were shrunk while hyphae were morphologically changed and frequently branched. Such microscopic observations were also found for leaves pretreated with a commercial fungicide Dithianon. These results suggest that bio-sulfur may be used to control citrus melanose as an environment friendly alternative to organic synthetic fungicides

  • To evaluate the effect of bromobenzene pretreatment on the bromobenzene metabolism, the animal group was induced the stage of slight liver damage with 7 times bromobenzene injection every two days (400 mg/kg body wt. i.p.). In the present experimental animal model, the single dose of bromobenzene(400 mg/kg body wt. i.p.) was injected to the bromobenzene-pretreated rats and the hepatic aniline hydroxylase(AH) activity, glutathione(GSH) content and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity were determined at the intervals of 2, 4, 8, 24 hours throughout 24 hr. The activities of hepatic AH and GST were generally higher in bromobenzene-pretreated rats than those in normal group throughout the whole course of experiment. Furthermore, the decreasing rate of hepatic GSH content was also higher in bromobenzene pretreated rats than in normal rats. Moreover, the value of V$_{max}$ in hepatic GST was higher in bromobenzene pretreated rats than that in the normal rats. In conclusion, these results indicate that the pretreatment of bromobenzene may rather enhance the bromobenzene metabolism.

  • This study was attempted to investigate the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin(4mg/kg iv,) in rabbits pretreated with diltiazem(l and 2.5mg/kg) for 7 days. The plasma concentration and area under the curve(AUC) of phenytoin were increased significantly(p<0.05) in rabbits pretreated with diltiazem(2.5mg/kg) compared with those of control rabbits. Volume of distribution and total body clearance were decreased significantly(p<0,05) in rabbits pretreated with diltiazem compared with those of control rabbits. From the results of this experiment, it is desirable that dosage ragimen of phenytoin should be adjusted and that therapeutic drug monitoring should be practiced for reduction of side or toxic effect when phenytoin will be administered with diltiazem in clinical practice.
