A non-linear finite element model (FEM) was constructed using a three-dimensional software (ATENA-3D) to investigate the effect of strengthening on the behavior of prestressed hollow-core (PHC) slabs with or without openings. The slabs were strengthened using near surface mounted (NSM)-carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. The constructed model was validated against experimental results that were previously reported by the authors. The validated FEM was then used to conduct an extensive parametric study to examine the influence of prestressing reinforcement ratio, compressive strength of concrete and strengthening reinforcement ratio on the behavior of such slabs. The FEM results showed good agreement with the experimental results where it captured the cracking, yielding, and ultimate loads as well as the mid-span deflection with a reasonable accuracy. Also, an overall enhancement in the structural performance of these slabs was achieved with an increase in prestressing reinforcement ratio, compressive strength of concrete, external reinforcement ratio. The presence of openings with different dimensions along the flexural or shear spans reduced significantly the capacity of the PHC slabs. However, strengthening these slabs with 2 and 4 (64 and $128mm^2$ that represent reinforcement ratios of 0.046 and 0.092%) CFRP strips was successful in restoring the original strength of the slab and enhancing post-cracking stiffness and load carrying capacity.

The purpese of this research is to experimentally verify the effect of prestressing on the control of cracks and on the possible increase of load capacity of the members by testing five beams with same cross section and same reinforcement ratio but with different amounts of prestressing. The test results indicate that the ultimate strength of prestressed concrete beams is only slightly higher than that of unprestressed concrete beams. It may be however need more experimental results to come to this conclusion. But it can be clearly seen that the effect of prestressing on the crack width is remarkable and that the reduction of about to 50% in crack width under service loads can be easily achieved by introducing small prestressing (about 25% of a fully prestressing).

The purpose of this study is to analyze the deflection of the prestressed beams. In this paper, a finite element model for deflections of prestressed beams is presented. Proposed finite element model was verified comparing with existing experimental results, and it showed a good agreement with the experimental results. Also, a parametric study has been conducted to analyze the influence of eccentricity, span-depth ratio, and prestressing force. The finite element model results were compared with hand calculation results. Deflections were increased as the eccentricity decreases, the span-depth ratio increases, and the prestressing force decreases. Hand calculation overestimated the deflection when the eccectricity or prestressing force is too small.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of applied tensile force and temperature on the permeability of magnetic flux in prestressing steel. The permeability of magnetic flux is the ratio at which the magnetic flux between two points passes. The prestressing steel used in these experiments included a 7-mm PS wire mainly used for cable-stayed bridges and a 12.7-mm PS strand for prestressed concrete bridges. The experiments to extract the permeability of the magnetic flux of steel wire and strand were conducted under various tensile levels and temperature conditions. From the experimental results, it was observed that the permeability of magnetic flux of the PS tension material was linearly proportional to the applied tensile stress level, and inversely proportional to the temperature. If the experimental relationship among the magnetic permeability, temperature, and prestressing ratio of a PS tension material is known in advance, the current tension stress level on PS members can be evaluated by measuring solely the magnetic permeability and temperature.
Nearly 400 composite railway bridge decks of a new kind belonging to the trough type with U-shaped cross section have been constructed in Belgium over the last fifteen years. The construction of these bridge decks is rather complex with the preflexion of precambered steel girders, the prestressing of a concrete slab and the addition of a 2nd phase concrete. Until now, they have been designed with a classical computation method using a pseudo-elastic analysis with modular ratios. Globally, they perform according to the expectations but variability has been observed between the measured and the computed camber of these bridge decks just after the transfer of prestressing and also at long-term. A statistical analysis of the variability of the relative difference between the measured camber and the computed camber is made for a sample of 36 bridge decks using no less than 10 variables. The most significant variables to explain this variability at prestressing are the ratio between the maximum tensile stress reached in the steel girders during the preflexion and the yield strength and the type of steel girder. For the same sample, the long-term camber under permanent loading is computed by two methods and compared with measurements taken one or two years after the construction. The camber computed by the step-by-step method shows a better agreement with the measured camber than the camber computed by the classical method. The purpose of the paper is to report on the statistical analysis which was used to determine the most significant parameters to consider in the modeling in order to improve the prediction of the behaviour of these composite railway bridge decks.

The partially prestressed concrete members have intermediate degree of prestressing between the reinforced and fully prestressed concrete members. Partially prestressed concrete members take advantages of both the merits of fully prestressed concrete members under the service load state and those of reinforced concrete members under the ultimate load state. Total 12 partially prestressed concrete T-beams were m4de and tested to find the effects of prestressing ratio, stirrup arrangement and shape of cross section on the flexural and shear behavior of the partially prestressed concrete beams. In this paper, the test procedure and the ultimate behavior of test beams are described. The validity of prestressing indices is checked by analyzing test results.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the important parameters on the transfer length during the dynamic flame cutting of tendon experimentally. The considered parameters were strand diameter, concrete cover thickness, stirrup, debonding strand and release method. Ten pretensioned concete beam specimens were cast and tested. Time history curves for the axial strain of tendon were measured by electrical resistance strain gauges mounted on the strands. Experimental results indicated that large dynamic shock effects occurred near cut-end during the sudden release. The prestressing forces are dependent on the parameters above considered. The ratio of residual prestressing forces of 12.7 mm strands is greater than 15.2 mm strands. Using debonding strand and gradual release are more efficient for applying prestressing forces.

This paper introduces an experimental verification and a field application of the proposed technique using the combination of FEM and HGA about the loss prestressing force of an exteranl tendon by above same authors. The vibration tests have been conducted by using a laboratory models and the externally prestressed tendon at the field and the natural frequencies are extracted from the vibration tests. The proposed technique based on the extracted natural frequencies is applied. It is seen that the errors in the tension and lost prestressing force by proposed technique are about 4% from a laboratory model test. For the model verification at field, exact modeling has beem made with Rayleigh damping. It is seen that the error in the tension by proposed technique is less than 1% and the estimated lost prestressing force converges less than the exact value.

The objective of this paper is to investigate and analyze the behaviour of prestressed I section structural members constructed with ultra high perfomance steel fiber reinforced cementitious concrete (SFR-UHPC). This material is known as reactive powder concrete (RPC) mixed with domestic materials and its compressive strength is over 150MP. The parameters of test specimens were span to depth ratio, prestressing force, prestressing wire placement and web width. Most influential parameter to determine the failure mode between shear and flexural action was proved to be shear span ratio. The characteristics of ultra high-strength concrete is basically brittle, but due to the steel fiber reinforcement behaviour of this structure member became ductile after the peak load. As a result of the test, the stress block of compressive zone should be redefined. The proposed analytical calculation of internal force capacity based by plastic analysis gave a good prediction for the shear and flexural strength of specimens. The numerical verification of the finite element model which constitutive law developed for Mode I fracture of fiber reinforced concrete correctly captured the overall behaviour of the specimens tested.

To use concrete box culverts effectively, precast goods are manufactured at a factory, then linked and anchored with prestressing tendon at a field. However, the corrosion of rebar and prestressing tendon in the box culverts utilizing portland cement concrete is issued when the cracks occur at a underground water level. It has been reported that reported that expansive concrete, compared with portland cement concrete, has many structural advantages such as increasing capacity of watertight, controling initial crack and improving durability due to its property of expansion. During flexure test with RC beam made from expansive concrete, in the case of a constant section of concrete element, the lower steel ratio is, and in the case of a constant steel ratio, the more incremental the section of concrete element, the more incremental the amount of chemical prestress by expansive concrete is. At the segment of the box culverts using expansive concrete, the numbers of crack and its gap is reduced, and ultimate load and initial crack load is much larger than the segment at which expansive concrete is nor used. Also lay-out of tendon with a curvature generate upward force so that deflection is reduced. Through the whole procedure, it could be confirmed that performance precast box culvert by means of using expansive concrete is improved.
