  • A new type of girder, called steel-confined prestressed concrete girder (SCP girder), has been developed, which maximizes the structural advantages of concrete, steel, and PS tendon, and improves on the shortcomings of steel plate girder, PSC I-girder, and preflex girder bridge for use in the construction of middle- or long-span bridges. To verify the propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of this girder, a static load test was carried out (Kim et al.., 2002). Since the main damage typically sustained by steel bridges results from the fatigue caused by the repetition of traffic loads, fatigue safety must therefore be guaranteed in applying the SCP girder in the construction of real bridges. In this study, a fatigue test was carried out to investigate fatigue behavior and provide basic data for fatigue design. Based on the fatigue test, the fatigue safety of the girder was estimated. For the fatigue test, 10-m specimens were designed for a standard-design truckload (DB-24). A static load test was also performed before the fatigue test to analyze the structural behavior of the specimens. After the fatigue test, outer steel plates were removed to observe the condition of the concrete in the girder.

  • This paper deals with the flexural performance of a composite girder system designed to readily form a composite section without a formwork and to easily realize multistage preflexing and prestressing. After a 3-Dimensional finite element modeling for construction stage analysis, the parametric numerical analysis was performed to analyse the stress distribution on the composite girder sections and the prestressing effects along with concrete pouring method and strand tensioning method. Based on the stress distribution analysis, a favorable construction stage model has been rationally chosen and then the ultimate flexural strengths were evaluated to conduct a comparative study, which exceed the nominal flexural strength suggested by the current design specification(ASD). It can be concluded that the proposed composite girder and fabrication procedure should have a sufficient structural performance.

  • The SCP girder, which compensates for the shortcomings of conventional girders through the effective composition of concrete, steel, and PS tendon, has recently been developed and applied on real bridges. Developed as a simple-support type, it may be applied on simple-support and continuous bridges by connecting the simple-support SCP girders to the interior supports. A continuous SCP girder, which has structural and cost advantages over the simple-support SCP girder, is proposed in this study. Likewise proposed herein is a new method of constructing a continuous SCP girder, using segments of the girder sequentially. A two-span, half-scale specimen was designed and constructed to verify the propriety of the continuous SCP girder bridge. A static load test was also carried out, using this specimen, to examine the behavior of the continuous SCP girder. Based on the results of the study, it is expected that the continuous bridge that uses the continuous SCP girder can guarantee the structural safety of the simple-support SCP girder.

  • Various PSC and steel-concrete composite railway bridges are being developed for short-medium spans with structural and economic efficiency. According to the design concept, the prestressed composite girder bridge has the advantages of being lightweight and having low girder depth, with the capacity for long spans. However, the dynamic behavior under a passing train is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the modal parameters before performing dynamic analyses. In this paper, real-scale prestressed composite girders were fabricated as a test model and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequency and modal damping ratio. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer was applied to obtain frequency-response functions, and the modal parameters were also evaluated after the fracture of test models. With application of reliable properties from modal tests, the estimation of dynamic performances of prestressed composite girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of a moving train.

  • To ensure the serviceability requirements of PSC composite girder bridges, it is essential to predict the stresses and deformations of the structure under service load conditions. Stresses and deformations vary continuously with time due to the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. The importance of these time-dependent effects is much more pronounced in precast prestressed concrete structures built in stages than in those constructed in one operation. In this paper, time-dependent analyses for PSC composite bridges using 30m standard girders have been conducted considering with the variation of the times of introducing initial prestressing forces and casting concrete. A computer program has been developed for the time-dependent analysis of simple or continuous PSC composite girders and parametric studies are conducted. Based on the numerical results, it is investigated the long-term behaviors of PSC composite girder bridges and discussed the limitations of the current codes for the prestress loss.

  • Member force, strain and stress distribution of a section are obtained for prestressed steel and concrete(PSSC) composite bridge subjected to dead and live load in order to interpret the effect of prestressing and deformation of tendon. The stress and strain distribution and moment capacity are obtained for both noncomposite and composite section and for allowable stress limit state, yield limit state and strength limit state. Reliability analysis is conducted after assuming limit states for deflection, stress and flexural strength. Comparing that the reliability index for stress is near 0 for example section which is designed to satisfy the allowable stress exactly, the reliability indexes for deflection and flexural strength are high. Reliability of PSSC girder which is designed based on allowable stress of bridge design code is high for deflection and flexural strength.

  • Integral and rigid frame bridges have advantages in bridge maintenance and structural efficiency by eliminating expansion joints and bridge supports. However, the detail of typical girder-abutment connection is rather complex and increases construction cost depending on construction detail. For the purpose of compensating disadvantages such as complexity and additional cost, a new type of bridge is proposed in this study, which improves the efficiency of construction by simplifying the construction detail of girder-abutment connection. The proposed bridge has the connection detail of steel girder and abutment integrated by prestressed PS bar installed in the connection. In this study, finite element analysis and fatigue load test are conducted to evaluate the fatigue capacity of the proposed girder-abutment connection. The results of the finite element analysis revealed that the possibility of the fatigue damage in the girder-abutment connection is very low. The results of the fatigue load test verified that the integrity of the girder and abutment connection is maintained after 2,000,000 cycles of fatigue loading.

  • An object oriented numerical analysis program of axial-flexural elements and the step-by-step method (SSM) has been developed to analyze concrete long-term behaviors of structures constrained internally and externally. The results of the numerical analysis for simple and continuous prestressed (PS) concrete box and composite girders, pre-cast slab of continuous steel composite girder, and simple preflex composite girder show that the adjusting coefficient decreases by increasing constraint. The loss rates of pre-tension force were not sensitive but those of pre-compression force were increased rapidly by decreasing adjusting coefficient. This indicates that the design based on the loss rate of pre-tension can over-estimate the pre-compression force in a concrete section constrained internally and externally. The adjusting coefficients which satisfy results of the numerical analysis are 0.35~0.95, and it can be used as an index of constraint of concrete long-term deformation. The adjusting coefficient 0.5 of Bridge Design Specifications can under-estimate residual stress of PS concrete slab, and the coefficient 0.7 or 0.8 of LRFD Bridge Designing Specifications can under-estimate the loss rates of continuous PS concrete girders. The adjusting coefficient of hybrid structures should be less then 0.4.

  • In South Korea, U-type girder development was attempted as a means to increase the length of I-type girder, but due to the large self-weight according to the post-tension method, the application of rail bridges of 30m or less is typical. There are not many examples of application of pre-tension type girder. This study does not limit the post-tension method, but applies the pre-tension method to induce a reduction in self-weight and materials used due to the reduction of the cross-section. In addition, we intend to apply the on-site pre-tensioning method using the internal reaction arm of the U-type girder. The prestressed concrete U-type girder bridge is composed of a concrete deck slab and a composite section. Compared to the PSC I-type, which is an open cross-section because the cross section is closed, structural performance such as resistance and rigidity is improved, the safety of construction is increased during the manufacturing and erection stage, and the height ratio is reduced due to the reduction of its own weight. Therefore, it is possible to secure the aesthetic scenery and economical of the bridge. As a result, it is expected that efficient construction will be possible with high-quality factory-manufactured members and cast-in-place members. In this paper, the introduction of the pre-tension method on-site and the analytical performance verification of the anchoring block for tension are included.

  • Recently, to resolve problems regarding legal liability for accidents and disasters, various simulation techniques such as F.E.M. and F.V.M. have been used in the field of forensic engineering. In this study, we performed mechanical structure analysis using ADINA to investigate the cause of bridge collapse accidents. Such accidents occurred owing to modified and missing processes in comparison with the original design while filling with concrete. Modified and missing processes cause buckling of the upper plate and twisting of the main girder. Through this study, we determine the exact cause of bridge collapse by comparing the evaluation of the structure stability of the original design with the evaluation of the structure stability of the modified and missing process using ADINA structure analysis. Hence, this result indicates that buckling prediction through FEA is the most effective method.
