In this study, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of plain finned heat exchangers having 5.0 mm diameter (fin collar 5.3 mm) tubes were investigated. Six samples having different fin pitches (1.1 to 1.3 mm) and tube rows (1 and 2 row) were tested. The fin pitch had a negligible effect on j and f factors. Both j and f factors decreased as the number of tube row increased, although the difference was not significant for the f factor. When compared with the j and f factors of the samples having 7.3 mm diameter tubes, the present j and f factors yielded lower values. However, the j/f ratio was larger at low Reynolds numbers. Possible reasoning is provided from the flow pattern consideration. Comparison with existing correlations were made.

This paper provides further validation of the burst pressure estimation equations for multiple axial surface cracked steam generator tubes, recently proposed by the authors based on analytical local collapse load approach against systematic FE damage analysis results of Alloy 690 tubes with twin axial surface cracks. Wide ranges of the relative crack depth and multiple crack configurations are considered. Comparison shows good agreements, giving sufficient confidence of the proposed equations.
The data for friction factor of the pipe correlated by Reynolds number and relative roughness have been reported well as a Moody chart. However, the results for corrugated shapes have been not investigated sufficiently. In this research, therefore, the pressure drop and friction factor are obtained. Flexible metal tubes with corrugations for the measurement are made of stainless steel plates. The kinds of tubes for the measurement are 5 annular types and helical types. The pressure drop & the velocity of the flow are obtained by micromanometer & digital pressure sensor, supplying dry air at several steps. Then the pressure drop is calculated for each tube, using the obtained data. The result shows that the pressure drop is strongly influenced by the viscous dissipation of kinetic energy due to the circulation of flows, rather than a viscous friction loss. The pressure drop increased consistently as the Reynolds number increases.

Heat transfer and pressure drop measurements are made on low integral-fin tubes in turbulent water flow condition. The integral-fin tubes investigated in this paper are nominally 19mm in diameter. Eight tubes have been used with trapezoidally shaped integral-fins having fin density from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 grooves. Plain tube having same diameter as finned tube is also tested for comparison. Experiments are carried out using R-11 as working fluid. The refrigerant condensates at a saturation state of $30^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface cooled by coolant. The amount of noncondensable gases present in the test loop is reduced to a negligible value by repeated purging. For a given heat input to the boiler and given cooling water flow rate, all test data are taken on steady state. The heat transfer loop is used for testing single long tubes and cooling water is pumped from a storage tank through filters and flowmeters to the horizontal test section where it is heated by steam condensing on the outside of the tube. The pressure drop across the test section is measured by means of pressure gauge and manometer. Each tube tested is cleaned with sodium dichromate pickling solution and well rinsed with water prior to installation in the test section. The results obtained in this study is as follows : 1. Based on inside diameter and nominal inside area, heat transfer of finned tube is enhanced up to 4 times as that of a plain tube at constant Reynolds number and up to 2 times at constant pumping power. 2. Friction factors are up to 1.6~2.1 times those of plain tube. 3. At a given Reynolds number, Nusselt number decrease with increasing pitch to diameter. 4. The constant pumping power ratio for low integral-fin tubes increase directly with the effective area to the nominal area ratio, and with the effective area diameter ratio.

The present study investigated two-phase flow distribution, phase separation and pressure drop in multi-microchannel tubes under adiabatic condition. The test section consisted of inlet and outlet headers with the inner diameter of 19.4㎜ and 15 parallel microchannel tubes. Each microchannel tube brazed to the inlet and outlet headers and had 8 rectangular ports with the hydraulic diameter of 1.32㎜. The key experimental parameters were orientation of header (horizontal and vertical), flow direction of refrigerant into the inlet header (in-line, parallel and cross flow) and inlet quality (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3). It was found that the orientation of the header had relatively large effect on the flow distribution and phase separation, while the inlet quality didn't affect much on them. The horizontal header showed the better flow distribution and phase separation characteristics than the vertical one. The parallel flow condition with the horizontal header showed the best performance for the flow distribution and phase separation characteristics under the test conditions. Two-phase pressure drops through the microchannel tubes with the horizontal header were higher than those of the microchennel tubes with the vertical header due to gravitational effect.
The tulip-inversion of flames in half-open tubes was investigated experimentally. Experiments was carried out in tubes with various shapes. The image of a flame propagation were pictured by HICCD(High speed intensified CCD) and the dynamic pressure of tubes was measured by a piezo pressure sensor. By analyzing the images of the flame propagation, we found the time and the distance for the occurrence of tulip-inversion. Regardless of the shapes of tubes, time of tulip-inversion are similar and inversely proportional to the burning velocity. But distances have different tendency. In a straight tube, the distance of tulip-inversion increases when the burning velocity increases. But in a converging tube, the distance of tulip-inversion decreases when a burning velocity increases. And the distance of tulip-inversion in a converging tube is much smaller than the distance of tulip-inversion in a straight tube. These results are caused by the deceleration of a flame when the diameter of a hole in open-side of a tube is small. The deceleration causes little effect on the time of tulip-inversion.
Experimental investigation on two-phase flow boiling heat transfer of R-410A and R-134a in horizontal small tubes is reported. The pressure drop and local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over heat flux range of 5 to $40\;kW/m^2$, mass flux range of 70 to $600\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature range of 2 to $12^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0 in test section with inner tube diameters of 3.0 and 0.5 mm, and lengths of 2000 and 330 mm, respectively. The section was heated uniformly by applying a direct electric current to the tubes. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and inner tube diameter, on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are presented. The experimental results are compared against several existing correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants in small tubes is developed.

Pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of HCFC123, HFC134a, HCFC22, HFC407C, HFC410A and HFC32 wre measured on a horizontal smooth tube, 26 fpi low fin tube, Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E enhanced tubes. AN experimental apparatus was designed such that all tubes heated by cartridge heaters could be installed at the same time to save the refrigerant. Data were taken in the pool of $7^{\circ}C$ with the heat flux decreasing from 80 kW/$m^2\;to\;5kW/m^2$. Test results showed that HTCs of pure refrigerants and those of a azeotrope were greatly influenced by reduced pressure. HTCs of HFC407C were 21~25% lower than those of HCFC22 due to mass transfer resistance. For all refrigerants, enhanced tubes with sub-surface and sub-tunnels showed the largest heat transfer enhancement. Especially the largest heat enhancement was obtained for HCFC123 whose reduced pressure is the lowest among al the refrigerants tested. This indicates that either Turbo-B or Thermoexcel-E enhanced tube would be the best choice when used with a low vapor pressure refrigerant.

A plate-fin heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger widely used in air conditioners, and tubes and fins are tightly assembled by the mechanical expansion process of tubes. The tube expansion process deforms the grooves inside the tube, and the groove shapes also affect the adhesion between tubes and fins. In this study, the adhesion and heat transfer performance affected by the tube expansion of the non-uniform groove shape tube with different heights are investigated by both analysis and experiments. From the analysis method, it was shown that the contact pressure of non-uniform groove tube is higher than that of the uniform groove tube, and the most appropriate high groove number of the non-uniform groove tube is designed for the maximum contact pressure. From the experimental results, the decreasing rate of the condensation heat transfer coefficient is smaller in the non-uniform groove tube with different heights, compared to the conventional uniform groove tube. Also, the air-side heat transfer coefficient of the non-uniform groove tube with different heights is higher than that of the uniform groove tubes.

This paper presents on the evaluation of numerical analysis model of a ball valve used for a gas pipeline. The ball valve has important role to control the gas flow of the pipeline as well as safety operation to prevent gas explosion at the emergency. For the validation of numerical simulation, the computational domains are introduced three different types: a hexahedron chamber connected to a pipeline outlet without considering the geometry of pressure tubes, a pipeline only considered the geometry of pressure tubes, and a pipeline connected both of the a hexahedron chamber and pressure tubes. The commercial code, SC/Tetra, is introduced to solve the three-dimensional steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis in the present study. The valve flow coefficient and valve loss coefficient with respect to the valve opening rate of 30%, 50%, and 70% are compared with experimental results. Throughout the numerical analysis for the three analysis domains, pressure computed along the pipeline is affected by computational domains. It is noted pressure obtained by the computational model considering both of the a hexahedron chamber and pressure tubes has a relatively good agreement to the experimental data.
