  • This study was to investigate the effect of main monomer, butyl acrylate instead of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, of acrylic PSAs on adhesive properties. The copolymers of butyl acrylate, acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate were synthesized and their adhesive properties were investigated after crosslinking with two different agents. Comparing to 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-based one which has branch-like side groups, butyl acrylate-based PSA with linear side groups show poor adhesive properties. In case of crosslinking agent, epoxy-typed agent than isocyanate-typed one showed better properties than isocyanate-typed one because epoxy-typed agent has more crosslinking sites and produces more flexible bonds, ester and ether, than isocynate-typed one. Most adhesive properties of PSAs were increased with acid content.

  • The acrylic copolymers with variation in side chain were synthesized based on molecular design. Wettability and adhesion properties on the wafer surface were investigated for these acrylic copolymer pressure sensitive adhesives. Three-dimensional networks of linear acrylic copolymers were produced with epoxy-type Tetra-DX cross-linking agent. The effect of cross-linking on adhesion characteristics was investigated. The side chain of acrylic copolymer played more important role in wettability than the interfacial interaction. As the degree of cross-linking increased, both probe tack and peel strength decreased. Also, heat resistance measured by SAFT increased with cross-linking; however, it showed the deterioration when excess cross-linking agent was added.

  • Using various compositions of thermally conductive inorganic fillers with boron nitride (BN) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$), solventless UV-curable thermally conductive acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were prepared. The base of the PSAs consists of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and isobornyl acrylate. The compositions of the thermally conductive inorganic fillers were 10, 15, 20, and 25 phr in case of BN, and 20:0, 15:5, 10:10, 5:15, and 0:20 phr in case of $BN/Al_2O_3$. The adhesion properties like peel strength, shear strength, and probe tack, and the thermal conductivity of the prepared PSAs were investigated with different thermally conductive inorganic filler contents. There were no significant changes in photo-polymerization behavior with increasing BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. Meanwhile, the conversion rate and transmittance of the PSAs decreased and their thermal stabilities increased with increasing BN content. Their adhesion properties were also independent of the BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. The dispersibility of BN in the acrylic PSAs was better than that of $Al_2O_3$ and it ranked the thermal conductivity in the following order: BN > $BN/Al_2O_3$ > $Al_2O_3$.

  • To prepare acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), quaternary copolymer syrups were photopolymerized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate as default constituents and isobornyl acrylate and tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA) as variable constituents. After polymerization, 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate and photoinitiator were added and then crosslinked by UV-irradiation to prepare the PSAs. The characteristics of the syrup such as viscosity, molecular weight, and solid content were investigated. As increasing THFA contents, the relationship between molecular weight and solid content of the syrup was reciprocal. Also, the relationship between peel strength and surface energy of the PSAs showed the same tendency. All the PSA samples showed high transmittance (more than 92%), low haze (less than 1.0%) and low color-difference (less than 1.0).

  • To prepare transparent acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), terpolymer syrups were photopolymerized from 2- ethylhexyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate with third monomer having different chemical structure. After polymerization, 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate as a crosslinker and a photoinitiator were added and then UV-irradiated to prepare the PSAs. The adhesion performances and optical characteristics of the PSAs were investigated. Their adhesion performance was dependent on the composition of monomers in the polymer chain but optical properties were maintained at a suitable level. The PSAs prepared by bulky and heteroatom-containing monomers such as IBOA, THFA, and ACMO showed better adhesion performance than others.

  • In this work, flame retardant acrylic emulsion pressure sensitive adhesives were newly polymerized combining phosphorous flame retardant monomer and acrylic monomer like butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The process of polymerization showed 100% of conversion at solid content of 65%, and viscosity of acrylic emulsion was increased up to 5500 cps when phosphorous flame retardant monomer was added into acrylic emulsion. The structure of flame retardant acrylic emulsion was identified using FT-IR and thermal properties like glass transition temperature (Tg) were checked by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Acrylic emulsion without phosphorous flame retardant monomer had Tg of -44.1℃ and peel strength of 2,100gf/inch, however, flame retardant acrylic emulsion showed maximum Tg (-31.4℃) and peel strength of 200gf/inch when 15 part of phosphorous flame retardant monomer was added. Flammability test was also conducted to confirm the application of flame retardant acrylic emulsion as the flame retardant addtive.

  • Solution type pressure sensitive acrylic adhesives were synthesized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) as a base monomer and acrylic acid as a functional monomer. The surface energy and basic physical properties of synthesized PSA (pressure sensitive adhesives) were investigated as a function of contents of acrylic acid and crosslinking agent. The structures of adhesive were identified by FTIR. Viscosities and molecular weights of PSA were measured by a Brookfield viscometer and GPC, respectively. Consequently, molecular weight and viscosity increased as the contents of acrylic acid increased up to 6 wt% and then decreased at higher contents. Surface energy increased as the contents of acrylic acid increased owing to the increase of COOH groups, which yielded the enhancement of polarity of PSA. On the other hands, their peel strengths were inversely proportional to molecular weight and showed tendencies of decreasing as the contents of acrylic acid and crosslinking agent increased.

  • In order to improve resistant properties of water-borne acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) for automobiles, this study was carried out. Removable PSAs for automobiles were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of monomers, n-butyl acrylate(BA), n-butyl methacrylate(BMA), acrylonitrile(AN), acrylic acid(AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(2-HEMA), and AA and 2-HEMA could act as functional monomers for crosslink. Emulsion polymerization was carried out in a semi-batch type reactor. Water resistance, heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance were examined. As a result, water resistance increased with the amount of BMA, however, the effect of BMA content on the water resistance was insignificant at a range of over 14 wt%. The water resistance also increased with the amount of functional monomers, AA and 2-HEMA. The prepared PSAs satisfied all the standard for automobiles except heat resistance. However, the heat resistance comes nearly up to the standard. Also, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance of the prepared PSAs satisfied with the standard.

  • Toluene-free pressure sensitive adhesives were synthesized by using butyl acrylate (BA), 2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid (AA) as monomers and ethyl acetate as a solvent. The polymerization recipes were designed by changing 1, 3, 5 part per hundreds monomer (phm) of AA content on the basis of 100 BA parts. Two crosslinking agents, ethyl glycol diglycidyl ether (EDGE) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were added to the synthesized polymers to increase adhesion due to crosslinking. In the measurement of properties, holding power, peel strength, and initial tackiness increased with AA content due to crosslinking between carboxyl group in AA and epoxy group in EDGE and isocyanate group in IPDI. In the comparison of two crosslinking agents, EDGE showed better in the three properties than IPDI by better reaction of epoxy group of EDGE to carboxyl group of AA.
