  • This study analyzed data on the pore water pressure, the ground water level, the horizontal displacement and the resistivity monitoring from instrument system, which is established to evaluate the safety in reservoirs. The pore water pressure in the embankment ranged from $0.035{\sim}1.116kg/cm^2$. The seepage that piping showed, as well as the leakage from the reservoirs are acceptable for the safety management of the reservoir. The maximum horizontal displacement and direction analyzed from the measured inclinometer data gives us very effective information to evaluate the safety in reservoirs. The resistivity monitoring technique, which is obtained on the reservoir crest, is an efficient tool to detect leakage zone. The safety index(SI) was predicted by the resistivity monitoring, and was evaluated to have a safety level of 0.8-1.0 at all reservoirs. Safety evaluations of reservoir through instrument systems are effective when studying the embankment, when the results of the instrument system have been analyzed compositively.

  • For large reciprocating compressors in parallel operation, an analytical study has been carried out on the gas pulsation in associated discharge piping lines. Since the pressure pulsation at a valve, valve dynamics, and the gas flow rate through the valve are interrelated, affecting one another, these need to be solved simultaneously. Acoustic transfer matrix method, which relates acoustic pressure and velocity at one location to those at another location, has been adopted to calculate the effect of the gas flow at one valve location on the gas pulsation at other valve locations.

  • Although the globe is the most typical valve to control high pressure drop in piping system, it is very hard to figure out the characteristics of flow field in the globe valve caused by its complex geometry, So there is very few studies to find out flow characteristics of globe valve. In this study numerical analysis for flow field in the globe valve is carried out using the FLUENT code which is commercial CFD program. Pressure drop through the globe valve is also measured to verify the results come from numerical analysis. Comparing experiment with numerical analysis, two results are very close to each other.

  • The objective of present study is to obtain information on the stenosis effects in the branch tubes for industrial piping system and atherogenesis processing in human arteries. Numerical solutions for flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in the branch tubes are obtained by the finite volume method. Centerline velocity and pressure along the bifurcated tubes for water, blood and aqueous Separan AP-273 solution are computed and the numerical results of blood and the Separan solution are compared with those of water. Flow phenomena in the stenosed branch tubes are discussed extensively and predicted effectively. The effects of stenosis on the pressure loss coefficients are determined.

  • The purpose of the resent research is to investigate the characteristics of sound insulation at the circular voided concrete slab in the multi-housing. In order to do this research, the method for field measurement of floor impact sound level was used following the Korea Standard F2810-1996. For the multi-housing, three kinds of circular voided concrete slabs are used to measure the characteristics of sound insulation. The results are as follows; 1.The main factor affecting the characteristics of sound insulation at the circular voided concrete slab in the multi-housing is sound-absorbing materials in the circular tube. 2. The main factor to effect the difference of sound pressure level is circular tube in the concrete slab. 3. The forms of circular tubes effect the characteristics of sound insulation at the circular tube. 4. Sound Pressure Level resulting from the piping direction of circular tubes in little different to octave band level.More study will be needed about the depth and distance of sound insulation materials, and the components of sound insulation materials for the multi-housing.

  • In this study, the pressure loss of a fire hose reel hydrant was examined and the effects of each factor on the pressure loss were analyzed. First, in the pressure loss experiment according to the length of the reel hose, the pressure loss increased with increasing length of the reel hose; it was approximately 38.86% based on a 25 m hose. Second, the pressure loss of the reel hose per unit length was estimated to be $.13{\sim}.15kgf/cm^2$. Third, in the pressure loss experiment according to the change in the flow rate, the result was similar to the relation, flow rate - pressure loss (${\Delta}P{\sim}Q^2$), in the piping flow. These results provide basic data on the evaluation of fire pump pressure and the performance-based fire-protecting design of fire hose reel hydrants used in buildings.

  • When the pressure at the weak spot established at a certain part of a high pressure vessel or piping system exceeds a design pressure, this weak spot is burst, and the pressurized gas emitted through the weak spot will cause a compression wave system. In this connection, in the present study, an experimental study by using a conventional shock tube facility is performed to estimate the effects of the material of diaphragm, curvature radius and thickness of materials on the valve opening time in diaphragm. Pressure sensor having 500kHz in natural frequency is installed at 35mm downstream of the rupture diaphragm to measure the static pressure history of propagating and being accumulated compression wave. 4 kinds of materials are used as diaphragm that is aluminium, copper, stainless steel and zinc. The diaphragm radii of curvature R are ${\infty}$, 120mm and 60, respectively. And the depth for $90^{\circ}$ groove is 0.04mm. It is found that the smaller the tensile strength and elongation of the rupture diaphragm is, the smaller the radius of curvature of the rupture diaphragm is, and for the same conditions the thinner the thickness of the rupture diaphragm is, the shorter the valve opening time becomes. Also, the tensile strength, elongation and the radius of curvature of the rupture diaphragm for the same conditions are smaller, the maximum pressure rise caused by the coalescences of the compression wave is smaller. Finally the pressure ratio is higher, the valve opening time is shortened and gradient of pressure increment is more steepen.

  • This study analyzed pore water pressure, earth pressure and settlement through laboratory model tests in order to suggest the effective remodeling method in the case of reinforcing the upstream and downstream slope of deteriorated reservoirs that has no cores and filters or is not functional. The method of remodeling the upstream slope using dredge soil is first prevent seepage by installing the core, and the leakage water can be rapidly discharged through a filter installed on the downstream slope. Therefore, it is considered a highly efficient method of remodeling that reduces piping phenomena and increasing the storage capacity of the reservoir. The variation of earth pressure without the core and filter was greater than with it, while the change largely showed in the upstream slope, the downstream slope did not show any significant changes. The remodeling method of the downstream slope with the core appeared differently pore water pressure depending on the presence of the vertical and horizontal filters. In the upstream slope, the pore water pressure rises sharply, the base and middle gradually increased, and the downstream slope appeared small. The pore water pressure of embankment with a vertical and horizontal filter will be smaller than without it. The remodeling of deteriorated reservoir that does not have the function of the filter, the vertical filter must be installed in a position that is higher than the expected seepage line by removing portions of the downstream slopes. Since the horizontal filter is an important structure that provides stable drainage during an earthquake or concentrated leak, it is necessary to examine any change in the seepage characteristics depending on the filter intervals via three-dimensional finite element analysis, and it should be connected to the tow-drain to reduce the possibility of the collapse of the reservoir.

  • In the US, the number of cases of subterranean water contamination from tritium leaking through a damaged buried nuclear power plant pipe continues to increase, and the degradation of the buried metal piping is emerging as a major issue. A pipe blocked from corrosion and/or degradation can lead to loss of cooling capacity in safety-related piping resulting in critical issues related to the safety and integrity of nuclear power plant operation. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes Committee (BPVC) has recently approved Code Case N-755 that describes the requirements for the use of polyethylene (PE) pipe for the construction of Section III, Division 1 Class 3 buried piping systems for service water applications in nuclear power plants. This paper contains tensile and slow crack growth (SCG) test results for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe welds under the environmental conditions of a nuclear power plant. Based on these tests, the fracture surface of the PENT specimen was analyzed, and the fracture mechanisms of each fracture area were determined. Finally, by using 3D finite element analysis, limit loads of HDPE related to premature failure were verified.
