  • Grouting for the rock joint is to strengthen the rock strata by infiltrating cement grout materials into the rock joints. Grouting is one of a field of study which is difficult to develop deterministic and quantitative design approach because of multiphase behaviors of grout materials and 3 dimensional features of rock joints. Therefore, GIN (Grouting Intensity Number) can be a good index with appropriate monitoring of pressure and volume of grout. In this paper, we investigate the effects of joint roughness (JRC) and rheology of cement material during the infiltration of cement grout material into rock joint through CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analyses. With rough joint surface and increase of WC ratio, the frictional resistance during the grouting increases. The results have been summarized with polynomial correlations.

  • A splanchic artery occlusion for 90 min followed by reperfusion of the mesenteric circulation resulted in a severe form of circulatory shock characterized by endothelial dysfunction, severe hypotension, marked intestinal tissue injury, and a high mortality rate. The effect of rutin, a flavonoid having antiprostanoid, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antioxidant effect, were investigated in a model of splanchnic artery occlusion (SAO) shock in urethane anesthetized rats. Occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery for 90 min produced a severe shock state resulted in a fatal outcome within 120 min of reperfusion in many rats. Rutin was given as a bolus (1.28 mg/kg) 10 min prior to reperfusion. Administration of rutin significantly improved mean arterial blood pressure in comparison to vehicle treated rats (p<0.05). Rutin treatment also resulted in a significant attenuation in the increase in plasma amino nitrogen concentration, intestinal myeloperoxidase activity, intestinal lipid peroxidation, infiltration of neutrophils in intestine and thrombin induced adherence of neutrophils to superior mesentric artery segments. These results suggest that rutin provides beneficial effects in part by preserving endothelial function and attenuating neutrophil accumulation in the ischemic reperfused splanchnic circulation.

  • This study concerns the effect of drainage in reinforced soil on its stability during rainfall. A series of finite-element analysis based transient seepage analysis were performed on a number of cases with different drainage conditions in terms of layers of geotextiles installed in the reinforced zone. The results were then coupled with the limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis to investigate the variation of global stability factor of safety with rainfall infiltration into the reinforced wall. The results were thoroughly analyzed to get insight into the mechanism of pore water pressure reduction effect of the geotextile and into its effect on overall slope stability. It is shown that layers of geotextile installed in the reinforced zone can prevent decrease in suction in the reinforced zone during rainfall, thereby reducing potential risk of decreasing shear strength of the reinforced zone. Practical implications of the findings were discussed.

  • Both cast and extruded composites of SiC whisker reinforced 6061 Al alloy matrix were fabricated by high pressure infiltration of the alloy melt into the SiC preform and subsequent hot extrusion of the composite ingots. The micro structures, age hardening behavior and mechanical properties have been examined on the both cast and extruded composites of SiCw/6061. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 were obtained in which SiC whiskers were randomly oriented. Hot extrusion of these cast composites lead to alignment of the whisker in the direction of extrusion. Strengthening effect of whisker in the extruded composites is lower than that of the cast composites. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 showed higher thensile strength and lower elongation than extruded composites of SiCw/6061 at all testing temperatures. Lower tensile strength and higher elongation of the extruded composites were attributable to fine grain structures in which grain boundary sliding occruued preferentially at elevated temperatures.

  • In design and management of sea0dikes, engineers need to study various transient seepage conditions through dikes not only for the sea water infiltration into dikes due to cyclic rises of sea water level also for the seepage flow out from dikes toward the sea due to cyclic drawdown of sea water level. Characteristics of seepage flow toward the sea from dikes are more complicated than as known and remained unclearly. The case of such seepage flow may be explained by figuring out seepage characteristics in filter as a part of sea-dikes. Filters in most sea-dikes in Korea are inevitably placed with reversely inclined shape due to field construction conditions. Most computer programs for seepage analysis based on the various numerical methods give practically acceptable results, but for the case of reversely inclined section of filters any verification to apply them might be needed. In this study, large scaled model tests were executed to verify and understand seepage flow through earth-filled sea-dikes. The results from numerical analysis and model tests show some remarkable differences in pore pressure distribution under cyclic changes of see level, and some of the results need to be considered in design and construction practices with further study.

  • Ventilation fans utilized correctly can increase the effectiveness of fire fighters and survivability of occupants. It is possible to increase the pressure of a corridor to prevent the infiltration of smoke. In this study, experiments were carried out to evaluate ventilation effectiveness in corridor fires. Corridor used in the experiment was 20 m long. Heptane was used as a fuel. Temperature and visibility were measured in order to evaluate ventilation effectiveness according to the position of a vent. Vent distance ranged from 0 m to 4 m and height varied from 0 m to 1.5 m. When the vent was positioned 2 m long and 0.75 m high the result was most effective.

  • Micro-/macroporous carbons (MMCs) were prepared using a hollow mesoporous silica capsule (HMSC) as a sacrificial hard template. The carbonization process after the infiltration of furfuryl alcohol into the template-free HMSC material afforded MMC materials in high yield. The hard template HMSC could be removed by HF etching without deteriorating the structure of MMC. The MMC materials were fully characterized by SEM, TEM, PXRD, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. The replication processes were so successful that MMCs exhibited a hollow capsular structure with multimodal microporosity. Detailed textural properties of MMC materials were investigated by volumetric $N_2$ adsorption-desorption analysis at 77 K. To explore the gas sorption abilities of MMCs for other gases, $H_2$ and $CO_2$ sorption analyses were also performed at various temperatures. The multimodal MMC materials were found to be good sorbents for both $H_2$ and $CO_2$ at low pressure.

  • To reduce residual pores of composites and obtain a dense matrix, SiCf/SiC composites were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition (CVI) using SiC nanorods. SiC nanorods were uniformly grown in the thickness direction of the composite preform when the reaction pressure was maintained at 50 torr or 100 torr at 1,100℃. When SiC nanorods were grown, the densities of the composites were 2.57 ~ 2.65 g/㎤, higher than that of the composite density of 2.47 g/㎤ for non-growing of SiC nanorods under the same conditions; grown nanorods had uniform microstructure with reduced large pores between bundles. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal conductivity (room temperature) of the SiC nanorod grown composites were 412 ~ 432 MPa, 13.79 ~ 14.94 MPa·m1/2 and 11.51 ~11.89 W/m·K, which were increases of 30%, 25%, and 25% compared to the untreated composite, respectively.

  • Mountainous areas cover more than 70% of Korea. With the rapid increase in tunnel construction, tunnel-collapse incidents and excessive deformation are occurring more frequently. In addition, longer tunnel structures are being constructed, and geologically weaker ground conditions are increasingly being encountered during the construction process. Tunnels constructed under weak ground conditions exhibit long-term deformation behavior that leads to tunnel instability. This study analyzes the behavior of the bottom region of tunnels under geological conditions of long-term deformation. Long-term deformation causes various types of damage, such as cracks and ridges in the packing part of tunnels, as well as cracks and upheavals in the pavement of tunnels. We observed rapid tunnel over-displacement due to the squeezing of a fault rupture zone after the inflow of a large amount of groundwater. Excessive increments in the support member strength resulted in damage to the support and tunnel bottom. In addition, upward infiltration pressure on the tunnel road was found to cause severe pavement damage. Furthermore, smectite (a highly expandable mineral), chlorite, illite, and hematite, were also observed. Soil samples and rock samples containing clay minerals were found to have greater expansibility than general soil samples. Considering these findings, countermeasures against the deformation of tunnel bottoms are required.

  • This study is about penetrability of Micro Cement(MC) used for ground improvement. In this study, the characteristics of chemical grouting such as solidification, penetrability were analyzed experimentally by changing permeability of ground, grain size and relative density of grout material. For evaluating applicability of grout material, solidification test and penetrability test were performed. From the results of the tests, effective solidification ratio and penetrability ratio of MC was each 75%, 86% to be excellent when ground permeability was in the range of 10$^{-2}$ and 10$^{-4}$ cm/sec. Otherwise, those of Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) were both lower than 50% to be poor. When penetrability of grout material is needed for improvement of dam foundation and soft ground, application of MC Is much superior to that of the other materials. The results of the grouting tests in the water flowing ground show that solidification effect of long gel-time grout material is excellent as injection pressure increases when groundwater velocity is relatively low. But when groundwater velocity is relatively high, solidification effect of long gel-time grout material is very poor because most grout materials are outflowed. Therefore, as groundwater velocity is high, effective solidification ratio of long gel-time grout material is better than that of short gel-time grout material, also penetration distance of long gel-time grout material is longer than that of short gel-time grout material.
