Supersonic jet impingement on a flat plate has been investigated to show the flow physics for different jet heights and to demonstrate the adequacy of the characteristics-based flux-difference Wavier-Stokes code Current study also compares the steady-state solutions obtained with variable CFL number for different grid spacing with the time-accurate unsteady solutions using the inner iterations, displaying a good agreement between the two sets of numerical solutions. The unsteady nature of wall fluctuations due to bouncing of the plate shock is also uncovered for high pressure ratios. The methodology is then applied to a complex vertical launcher system where the jet plume hits the bottom wail, deflects into the plenum and eventually exits through the vertical uptake. Flow structures within vertical launcher system are captured and solutions are partially verified against the flight test data. Present jet impingement study thus shows the usefulness of CFD in designing a complex structure and predicting flow behavior within such a system.
An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a blunt body, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoke wheel-type wake generator with cylindrical rods. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized by altering the rotating direction (CW and CCW) and the normalized passing frequency $(0{\leq}St_H{\leq}0.20)$. The Reynolds number based on the cylindrical rod was $Re_d=375$. A phase-averaging technique was employed to characterize the unsteady wake. The effect of different rotating directions was examined in detail, which gave a significant reduction of $X_R$. The wall pressure fluctuations on the blunt body were analyzed in terms of the spectrum and the coherence.
In recent years, the piping vibration in many Power Plants is being increased by the aged generating facilities due to a long time use. Generally, the pressure fluctuations associated with the flow-induced excitations in this case are broadband in nature. Mainly, the dominant sources of vibration are a vortex-shedding, plane waves and boundary layer turbulence. The peak level of the spectrum is proportional to the dynamic head. A severe disturbance in pipeline results in the generation of intense broadband internal sound waves which can propagate through the piping system. The characteristic frequencies of operating loads of 20%, 57%, 70%, 100% are 4 - 6 Hz and coincide with the results from impact hammering test and FEM analysis. We chose the wire energy absorbing rope restraint as a vibration reduction method after reviewing the various conditions such as site, installing space and economic cost etc. After installation, the vibration level was reduced about 54% in velocity.
This paper presents a simplified analytical formulation for computing acoustic power radiation from a rectangular plate exposed to random forces such as turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuations and arbitrary mechanical force in a subsonic flow field. The expression for the acoustic power is derived using modal expansion method and light fluid loading is assumed on the plate. In order to simplify the formulation for acoustic power due to combined excitations of mechanical forces and turbulent pressures, it is assumed that the structural damping of the plate is small and excitations are broadband random forces having frequency spectra above the convective coincidence. Under these assumptions, an approximate solution for the broadband acoustic power radiation from a plate excited by both turbulent pressures and arbitrary mechanical forces is obtained and evaluated considering the effect of modal coupling on the radiated acoustic power. An efficient method is also suggested to compute modal acoustic impedance in a moving fluid medium by using averaged Green function.

A computational study to capture the flow around a floor mounted greenhouse shaped HAWT model was performed using the commercial software PowerFLOW 4.2b. The simulation kernel of this software is based on the numerical scheme known as the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), combined with an RNG turbulence model. Simulations were performed at 60 and 140 km/h free stream air speeds. Selective results from these computational simulations are presented to show the capability of this numerical approach to predict the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics characteristics of the 3-D flow field around the HAWT model.
In this study, a computational analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of porous surfaces on the lift and drag forces of the flat plate. With the porous treatment, it is found that the strength of the Karman vortex as well as its influences over the trailing-edge surface are much weakened, resulting in significant reduction of the pressure fluctuations over the flat plate. The drag and lift coefficients are decreased by 85% and 18%, respectively, compared to the solid surface. The computed results also indicate that the size of the porous surface area does not have much influences but the back side of the flat plate has non-negligible effects on the interaction between the wall and the Karman vortex. As a result, the lift coefficient for the solid back side case is decreased only by 50.5% compared to the solid case and the drag coefficient is even increased by 65%.

Laminar vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder with and without splitter plates attached to the circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers are simulated by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Strokes equations. The Strouhal number, lift and drag rapidly change with the splitter plate. Far-field noise from the vortex shedding behind the cylinder is computed using the Lighthill acoustic analogy and the Curle's solution for the Lighthill equation. The acoustic source functions are obtained from the computed near-field velocity and pressure. Numerical results show that the volume quadrupole noise is small at low Mach numbers, compared with the surface dipole noise. Also the amplitude and frequency of the acoustic density fluctuations are varied with the length of splitter plates. The scattering effects at the edge of a splitter plate are considered by using the half-plane Green's function.
In general, the conceptual lumped-parameter groundwater flow model to predict the groundwater fluctuations in hillside slopes has unknown model parameters to be estimated from the known input -output data. The purpose of this study is to estimate the optimal model parameters of the groundwater flow model developed by authors. The Mazilnum A Posteriori( MAP) estimation method is utilized for this purpose and it is applied to a site which shows the typical landslide in Korea. The result of application shows tllat the 반AP estimation method can estimate the unknown parameters properly well. The groundwater model developed along with estimation technique applied in this paper will be used for assessing risk of landslides.

We report a case of a morbidly obese man with an aortic aneurysm, in whom dental surgery was performed before elective cardiac surgery. His aortic aneurysm required emergency surgery. However, because of his morbid obesity, elective cardiac surgery was planned. Considering the high risk of infective endocarditis, dental surgery was required. Our patient was at a high risk of aortic rupture caused by hypertension and breathing difficulty in the supine position. Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is an anti-anxiety, sedative, and analgesic medicine that can stabilize circulatory dynamics and minimize blood pressure fluctuations. We administered intravenous DEX for sedation of the patient in Fowler's position. In conclusion, our understanding of the risk factors of DEX enabled us to perform safe invasive oral treatment.
This paper describes in detail the features of an extensive study on Spectral Density Functions (SDF's) of wind pressures acting on several low building roof geometries carried out in a boundary layer wind tunnel. Various spectral characteristics of wind pressures on roofs with emphasis on derivation of suitable analytical representation of spectra and determination of characteristic spectral shapes are shown. Standard spectral shapes associated with various zones of each roof and their parameters are provided. The established spectral parameters can be used to generate synthetic spectra adequate for the simulation of wind pressure fluctuations on building surfaces in a generic fashion.
