  • The present study evaluated the effective arrangement approach of transverse reinforcement in the jacket section for seismic strengthening of reinforced concrete columns. To simulate the full-scale columns, the section dimensions were determined as $450{\times}450mm$ for non-seismic existing columns and $750{\times}750mm$ for section enlargement strengthening columns. Over-lapped channel-shape bars and prefabricated bar units were proposed for closed-hoops in the jacket section, and conventional cross-ties anchored into existing columns and V-ties were considered for the supplementary ties. Test results showed that the axial capacity of the existing column and section enlargement columns with over-lapped channel-shape hoops was similar to the nominal strength calculated using ACI 318-14 procedure whereas the section enlargement column with prefabricated bar units possessed 1.25 times higher axial capacity than the nominal prediction. Furthermore, the axial ductility ratio of the section enlargement column with prefabricated bar unit was 139% higher than that of the existing column despite the potential size effect on ductility of concrete. Thus, it can be concluded that the developed prefabricated bar unit technique is practically useful for preventing the premature buckling of longitudinal reinforcement and confining core concrete in the section enlargement strengthening columns.

  • This present study is designed to analyze the mortality and potential years of life lost (PYLL) by malignant neoplasm of lung between OECD countries and Korea before and after the year 2000. We used the methods of Wilcoxon Singed Ranks Test between korean and other 30 OECD countries between 1993-1999 and 2000-2006 year using 2009 OECD Health data(2010) of 30 contries. At the results, the mortality of lung cancer in male korean was significantly increased after 2000 year whereas those in other 23 countries decreased. The mortalities in female were increased in 20 countries including Korea. PYLL in male and female korean were significantly decreased and male PYLL in other 26 countries was decreased, but female PYLL in other countries showed various patterns; increase in 12 countries and decrease in 3 countries. Therefore, the present study elucidated that the lung cancer-induced PYLL in the comparison between korean and OECD countries can be more important parameter.

  • MDCT is a useful, non-invasive, diagnostic tool in the evaluation of coronary artery disease. However, the image quality is affected by an irregular heart rhythm of the patients. Especially, premature ventricular contraction induced stair-step artifacts in the reconstruction of 2-D or 3-D images of the heart including coronary arteries. In recent, we experienced some improving of the image quality after correcting the PVC. Accordingly, the purpose of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the arrhythmia correction method, which was commercially available software, in improving the quality of the reconstruction images of the heart. Image analysis was performed, in consensus, by two radiologists. The scores for image quality were ranked as follows; excellent is 4 (image quality is markedly improved and is helpful in the image evaluation), good is 3 (image quality is mildly improved, but is somewhat helpful in the image evaluation), fair is 2 (image quality is improved and is not helpful in the image evaluation), and poor is 1 (image quality is not improved). We used ANOVA method to evaluate the statistical significant differences in the image qualities among the correction methods of the arrhythmia with below 0.05 of p-value. The method of moving the R-R interval showed statistically significant differences in improving of the image quality in patients with arrhythmia. We concluded that the regulation of R-R interval in patients with arrhythmia was an effective method to improve the image quality in the reconstructions of the MDCT coronary angiograms.

  • Purpose: Substantial tissue necrosis after snake bites requiring coverage with flap surgery is extremely rare. In this article, we report 7 cases of soft tissue defects in the upper and the lower extremities caused by snake bites, which needed to be covered with flaps. Among the vast mass of publications on snake bites there has been no report that focuses on flap coverage of soft tissue defects due to snake bite sequelae. Methods: Seven cases of soft tissue defects with tendon, ligament, or bone exposure after snake bites were included. All patients were males without comorbidities, the average age was 35 years. All of them required coverage with a flap. In 6 cases, the defect was localized on the upper extremity, in one case the lesion was on the lower extremity. Local flaps were used in 6 cases, one case was covered with a free flap. The surgical procedures included one kite flap, one cross finger flap and digital nerve reconstruction with a sural nerve graft, one reverse proximal phalanx island flap, one groin flap, one adipofascial flap, one neurovascular island flap, and one anterolateral thigh free flap. The average interval from injury to flap surgery was 23.7 days. Results: All flaps survived without complication. All patients regained a good range of motion in the affected extremity. Donor site morbidities were not observed. The case with digital nerve reconstruction recovered a static two point discrimination of 7 mm. The patient with foot reconstruction can wear normal shoes without a debulking procedure. Conclusion: The majority of soft tissue affection after snake bites can be treated conservatively. Some severe cases, however, may require the coverage with flap surgery after radical debridement, especially, if there is exposure of tendon, bone or neurovascular structures. There is no doubt that definite coverage should be performed as soon as possible. But we also want to point out that this principle must not lead to a premature coverage. If the surgeon is not certain that the wound is free of necrotic tissue or remnants of venom, it is better to take enough time to get a proper wound before flap surgery in order to obtain a good functional and cosmetic result.

  • Purpose : Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is characterized by arrested vascular and alveolar growth in the premature lung. Considering the consequences of arrested lung growth, the idea of administering bone marrow cells to enhance the inborn repair mechanism is promising as this may reduce the morbidity and mortality of BPD. We followed enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-labeled bone marrow cells (BMC) injected intraperitoneally into non-EGFP mice in order to determine their fate after transplantation. Methods : An angiogenesis inhibitor, SU1498, was injected subcutaneously on day 3 in non-EGFP C57BL/6 newborn mice to create a model of arrested alveolar development. On the following day, $1{\times}10^6$ BMCs isolated from major histocompatibility complex (MHC)- matched syngenic EGFP mice were injected intraperitoneally to non-EGFP BPD mice. Morphometric analysis, immunostaining, and confocal microscopy were performed to determine the fate of EGFP-positive stem cells in the injured lung. Results : SU1498 injection reduced alveolar surface area and mean alveolar volume in newborn mice. BMC injection resulted in recovery of lung structure comparable to controls. EGFP-positive BMCs were identified in the lungs of the recipient mice after intraperitoneal injection. The injected EGFP cells were co-stained with endothelial and epithelial cells of the developing lung as determined by confocal microscopy. Conclusion : Our results illustrated that EGFP-positive BMCs engrafted and trans-differentiated into epithelial and endothelial cells after intraperitoneal injection in a mouse model of arrested alveolar development.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the repeated dose toxicity of DA-125, a new anthracycline antitumor antibiotic, in rats. Before the 13-week main study, a 4-week dose-range finding (DRF) study was carried out. The administration of DA-125 intravenously at dosage levels of 0, 0.125, 0.5, 2.0, and 8.0 mg/kg/day to rats for 4 weeks resulted in premature deaths of all animals in the 8.0 mg/kg/day group and in the deaths of 4 males and 4 females at 2.0 mg/kg/day. Body weights were markedly reduced in the 8.0 mg/kg/day group and showed dose-related decreases in all treatment groups when compared with the control group. Reductions in weight gain were slight and not significantly different at 0.125 mg/kg/day but animals receiving 0.5 mg/kg/day showed more marked decreases in gain in a clear dose-related manner Based On the results of the above DRF study, a 13-week repeated dose intravenous toxicity study in rats with DA-125 was performed at a dose level of 0, 0.012, 0.08 and 0.3 mg/kg/day. No treatment related effects were noted in behavior or body weight in all treatment groups. One male at the highest dose level died on study day 26, but the death could not be related to test article toxicity. Swelling and scabbing of the ears was present in all of the groups, including the control group. There were no treatment related changes in the hematological, biochemical or urinalysis values in all treatment groups. Thymus weights were significantly reduced ill males receiving 0.3 mg/kg/day and they were sligltly, and not significantly, reduced in females of the same group. While there were no associated histological changes. Treatment related necrosis was found in the tail vein (injection site) at 0.08 and 0.3 mg/kg/day. On the basis of these results, the no observed effect level (NOEL) was 0.012 mg/kg/day and the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was estimated to be more than 0.3 mg/kg/day under the conditions tested.

  • Resistance to metronidazole, a key component of therapies against Helicobacter pylori, is common in clinical isolates. Resistance generally requires inactivation of rdxA (HP0954), and sometimes also frxA (HP0642), two related nitroreductase genes. Here we studied the effect of resistance to metronidazole on fitness of the gastric pathogen H. pylori. The effect of metronidazole resistance for H. pylori in culture was assessed first by looking at colonies formed by freshly constructed mutant derivatives of H. pylori strain 26695. Mutations resulting in metronidazole resistance caused premature death of H.pylori in stationary phase, but had no significant effect on early exponential growth. The effect of nitroreductase deficiencies on fitness in vivo was tested by infecting C57BL/6 mice with 1:1 mixtures of SS1 wild type and its isogenic metronidazole resistant derivatives. Inactivation of rdxA caused an inability to colonize mice in SS1 H. pylori strain. Derivatives of a metronidazole resistant strain that survived better in stationary phase, although remaining metronidazole resistant, could again colonize mice. In conclusion, metronidazole resistance diminishes H. pylori's fitness, but their costs can be suppressed by additional mutation.

  • This experiment was carried out to elucidate and study about plant defense mechanism subjected to water stress(drought, flooding). We measured water content, total soluble protein content as stress marker and superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase (CAT) as antioxidant enzymes subjected to water stress(drought, flooding) and recovery in soybean leaves. The results obtained were as follows; Two soybean lines(keonolkong, euhakong)leaves exposed to water stress (drought, flooding) showed premature senescence as evidence by the decrease in water content, and total soluble protein content, but those of soybean leaves subject to water stress recovery for 3 days were recovered. Visual damage was much worse at drought stress than flooding stress and was worse keunolkong than enhakong. The activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase subjected to water stress(drought, flooding)was on the decrease, but degree of decrease was different from a sort of soybean lines, drought and flooding stress.

  • Autologous transfusion, storage of one's own blood for subsequent infusion if needed, is safe and effective in a variety of scheduled operative procedures. Obstetric involvement in such programs is very limited, however, because of concern over the possibility of inducing premature labor or causing fetal distress by blood volume change or vasovagal reactions. We describe our experience with pregnant women in this program. The incidence of vagovagal reactions of autologous donation was 9.5% (2/21). After entry into this program, 17pastients received a total 37pints, which consist of 19 Autologous and 18 Homologous. Homologous transfusion was avoided in 30% of patients receiving blood. The values of the mean haematocrits before and after hpebotomy were 34.1 % and 31.8 % respectively. It was statically significant(p<0.01). We recommended that autologous blood donation by pregnant women in third trimester is safe for mothers or infants and it should be strongly encouraged for patient with placenta previa and repeated cesarean section.

  • A new malting barley variety, 'Baegho', was developed from a cross between Azuma Golden and Nishinochikara in 1998. An elite line, YMB2139-2B-1-10-2, was selected in 2005 and designated as Milyang137. It showed good agronomic performance in the regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 2006 to 2008 and was released with the name of 'Baegho' having high yielding and BaYMV and powdery mildew resistance. The average heading and maturing dates of 'Baegho' were April 21 and May 28, which were 3 and 2 day later than those of Hopum, check variety, at the RYT, respectively. 'Baegho' has shoter culm length (78 cm), more spikes ($1,062per\;m^2$) and heavier 1,000 grain weight (40.7 g) than those of Hopum, respectively. 'Baegho' is resistant to domestic BaYMV strains I, III and IV and powdery mildew at Iksan. In growth habit, 'Baegho' is close to type (IV) that is distinguished from other Korean malting barley cultivars, which could tolerant to premature heading damage that is major concern for the practice of the malting barley cropping. The yield potential of 'Baegho' in the RYT was about 5.57 MT/ha, which is about 13% higher than those of Hopum. This variety has good malting quality in grain and malting analysis showed better 1,000 grain weight, husk rate, diastatic power than those of Hopum. 'Baegho' applied for protection of new varieties of plant in 2009.
