Objective : This study examines whether functional motion is present at one or more years after Bioflex System placement. BioFlex System is a flexible rod system which has been used to preserve motion at the area of implantation. There has not been a scientific study showing how much motion is preserved after implantation. Methods : A total of 12 consecutive patients underwent posterior dynamic stabilization using the BioFlex System. Six patients were treated using a L3-4-5 construct and other six patients using a L4-5-S1 construct. Follow-up ranged from 12 to 33 months and standing neutral lateral, extension, flexion and posteroanterior (PA) radiographs were obtained at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months and at more than 12 months postoperatively. Range of motion (ROM), whole lumbar lordosis, and ROMs of motion segments from L2 to S1 were determined. Results : Patients with a L3-4-5 construct demonstrated a decrease in mean ROM for whole lumbar decreased from 40.08 to 30.77. Mean ROM for L3-4 (6.12 to 2.20) and L4-5 (6.55 to 1.67) also decreased after one year. Patients with a L4-5-S1 construct demonstrated L4-5 (8.75 to 2.70) and L5-S1 (9.97 to 3.25) decrease of mean ROM at one year postoperatively. Lumbar lordosis was preservep at both L3-4-5 and L4-5-S1 constructs. Clinical results showed significant improvements in both study groups. Conclusion : The present study provides preliminary information regarding the BioFlex motion preservation system. We conclude that the BioFlex System preserves functional motion to some degree at instrumented levels. However, although total lumbar lordosis was preserved, ROMs at implantation segments were lower than preoperative values.
Standard estimates are the numerical data of a unit quantity required for construction work such as the amount of materials, manpower, and the use of equipment required and are also a basis to calculate construction costs. Unfortunately, standard estimates for construction have also been used for garden construction these days as no standard estimates for garden construction have been developed or documented until now. As a result, many problems have arisen at garden construction sites since landscape construction and garden construction differ in terms of scope, size, design and construction methods. The purpose of this study was to develop standard estimates for garden construction for proper calculation of the cost of garden construction and to ensure gardens are created following appropriate construction processes. In order to develop standard estimates for garden construction, a preliminary survey was conducted on experts to understand current issues at first. After that, a questionnaire survey was done to examine problems of construction processes and ways of improvement, and on-site inspections were conducted utilizing CCTVs at construction sites to identify the actual amount of manpower required on site. Based on the results of the surveys and on-site inspections, a draft version of standard estimates for 5 types of planting work for garden construction was developed. Developing standard estimates for garden construction will serve as a stepping stone for the transparent and proper compensation for garden construction work, which will not only contribute to addressing issues between consumers and construction companies, but also to the stabilization of market economy and job creation.
We present a numerical simulation technique and some preliminary results of the impact and spreading of a droplet containing particles on the solid substrate in 2D. We used the 2nd-order Adams-Bashforth / Crank-Nicholson method to solve the Navier-Stokes equation and employed the level-set method with the continuous surface stress for description of droplet spreading with interfacial tension. The impact velocity has been generated by the instantaneous gravity. The distributed Lagrangian-multipliers method has been combined for the implicit treatment of rigid particles and the discontinuous Galerkin method has been used for the stabilization of the interface advection equation. We investigated the droplet spreading by the inertial force and discussed effects of the presence of particles on the spreading behavior using an example problem. We observed reduced oscillation and spread for the particulate droplet.
The main aim of this study is to establish methods of morphological preservation and elemental quantification for individual snow crystals. Individual snow crystals were collected at a height of 20 m above ground level. To stabilize and preserve the original morphologies of the snow crystals, cyanoacrylate, which has been used to fix liquid droplets, was applied (Kasahara et al., 2000). Several different kinds of snow crystals (dendrite, sectored plate, quasi-sectored plate, and hexagonal plate) were successively stabilized using this method. The stabilized snow crystals were pretreated with acetone, and then the elemental components contained in a whole snow crystal were quantified with the Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analytical technique. The snow crystal residual composition determined in the present study was dominated by sulfur and mineral components, and the elemental mass showed an apparent crystal size dependence, where the elemental mass gradually decreased as the crystal size increased.
Objective : To investigate the feasibility of C1 lateral mass screw and C2 pedicle screw with polyaxial screw and rod system supplemented with miniplate for interlaminar fusion to treat various atlantoaxial instabilities. Methods : After posterior atlantoaxial fixation with lateral mass screw in the atlas and pedicle screw in the axis, we used 2 miniplates to fixate interlaminar iliac bone graft instead of sublaminar wiring. We performed this procedure in thirteen patients who had atlantoaxial instabilities and retrospectively evaluated the bone fusion rate and complications. Results : By using this method, we have achieved excellent bone fusion comparing with the result of other methods without any complications related to this procedure. Conclusion : C1 lateral mass screw and C2 pedicle screw with polyaxial screw and rod system supplemented with miniplate for interlaminar fusion may be an efficient alternative method to treat various atlantoaxial instabilities.
We present a direct numerical simulation technique and some preliminary results of the capillary spreading of a droplet containing particles on the solid substrate. We used the level-set method with the continuous surface stress for description of droplet spreading with interfacial tension and employed the discontinuous Galerkin method for the stabilization of the interface advection equation. The distributed Lagrangian-multipliers method has been combined for the implicit treatment of rigid particles. We investigated the droplet spreading by the capillary force and discussed effects of the presence of particles on the spreading behavior. It has been observed that a particulate drop spreads less than the pure liquid drop. The amount of spread of a particulate drop has been found smaller than that of the liquid with effectively the same viscosity as the particulate drop.
This paper applies a Structural VAR approach to a 4 variable system in real GNP, M2, GNP deflator and nominal monthly earnings, disentangling 4 structural shocks, i.e., aggregate demand and supply shocks, wage pushes and various forms of regulations reinforced especially during stabilization process. Preliminary diagnostic tests confirm that the log level of each time series has at least one unit root, though the evidence is somewhat ambiguous for real GNP. One co-integration relationship is found among 4 variables, while no co-integration is found in a subsystem consisting of nomina) variables. The absence of co-integration among nominal variables strongly suggested that money is not neutral even in the long-run. The reduced form is estimated and the structural form is recovered using 6 additional identifying restrictions. Recovered structural shocks are able to capture main episodes of past 20 years, ranging from first and second oil shocks, to strong stabilization policy of early 80's and rapid wage hikes of late 80's. Overall responses of the economy to each structural shock are usually consistent with the standard Keynesian predictions, though some responses seem to be specific to Korean economic environment.
A series of 19 cases with maxillary hyperplasia and mandibular retrognathia were operated on by simultaneous superior repositioning of the maxilla after Le Fort I osteotomy and anterior repositioning of the mandible after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies with or without osteotomy of the inferior border of the mandible. These were evaluated by retrospective cephalometric and computer analysis for the longitudinal skeletal and dental changes for an average of 17.1 months after surgery. For stabilization of the osteotomized segments, the authors used wire osteosynthesis by means of bilateral infraorbital and zygomatic buttress suspension wire at the maxilla, and direct interosseous wire at the split segments of the mandibular rami. Results show generally good stability after simultaneous maxillary and mandibular surgery with wire osteosynthesis, and a minimal to moderate tendency toward skeletal and dental relapse. This article is a preliminary study to defy the efficiency of the wire osteosynthesis (wo)compared with rigid internal fixation (RIF) for simultaneous maxillary and mandibular surgery. 1. The vertical relapse rate of the A point after superior repositioning of the maxilla is 2.2%. 2. The horizontal relapse rate of the B point after advancement of the mandible is 18.3%. 3. The condyle is distracted inferiorly and slightly posteriorly at the immediate postoperative period. 4. At the long term follow up examination, the condyle presents tendency of return to the preoperative position. 5. Condylar segment angle is decreased at the immediate postoperative period, and at the long term follow up evaluation, the angle is increased. 6. Gonial angle is increased at the immediate postoperative period, and then is decreased at the long term follow up evaluation. 7. The dentition is satisfactory with acceptable movement at the long term follow up evaluation. 8. At the mandibular free body analysis, genioplasty shows good stability. 9. Wire osteosynthesis provides excellent stabilization for the simultaneous maxillary and mandibular surgery.

Lumbar stabilization exercise is a popular exercise method in recent clinicians, as it strengthens muscles around the spine and abdominal muscles, but there is a lack of research on the effects of pulmonary function and respiratory pressure. So, this study examined whether abdominal bracing exercise, a typical lumbar stabilization exercise, was effective in pulmonary function and respiratory pressure. In this study, a total of 20's 40 subjects were recruited and randomly divided into an abdominal bracing exercise group(n=20) and control group(n=20). Abdominal exercise group underwent 25 minutes of exercise. Pulmonary function and respiratory pressure values were measured to analyze respiratory function. As a results of the experimental group, there were significant improvements in FVC, FEV1, PEF and MEP(p<.05) and there was a significant difference in the comparison between groups, except the MIP. These results suggest that abdominal bracing exercise can be presented as effective exercises to improve respiratory function.
In this paper, we present preliminary feasibility studies on three types of solar observation payloads for future Korean Science and Technology Satellite (STSAT) programs. The three candidates are (1) an UV imaging telescope, (2) an UV spectrograph, and (3) an X-ray spectrometer. In the case of UV imaging telescope, the most important constraint seems to be the control stability of a satellite in order to obtain a reasonably good spatial resolution. Considering that the current pointing stability estimated from the data of the Far ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (FIMS) onboard the Korean STSAT-1, is around 1 arc minutes/sec, we think that it is hard to obtain a spatial resolution sufficient for scientific research by such an UV Imaging Telescope. For solar imaging missions, we realize that an image stabilization system, which is composed of a small guide telescope with limb sensor and a servo controller of secondary mirror, is quite essential for a very good pointing stability of about 0.1 arcsec. An UV spectrograph covering the solar full disk seems to be a good choice in that there is no risk due to poor pointing stability as well as that it can provide us with valuable UV spectral irradiance data valuable for studying their effects on the Earth's atmosphere and satellites. The heritage of the FIMS can be a great advantage of developing the UV spectrograph. Its main disadvantage is that two major missions are in operation or scheduled. Our preliminary investigations show that an X-ray spectrometer for the full disk Sun seems to be the best choice among the three candidates. The reasons are : (1) high temporal and spectral X-ray data are very essential for studying the acceleration process of energetic particles associated with solar flares, (2) we have a good heritage of X-ray detectors including a rocket-borne X-ray detector, (3) in the case of developing countries such as India and Czech, solar X-ray spectrometers were selected as their early stage satellite missions due to their poor pointing stabilities, and (4) there is no planned major mission after currently operating Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) mission. Finally, we present a preliminary design of a solar X-ray spectrometer covering soft X-ray (2 keV) to gamma ray (10 MeV).
