Preliminary Estimation of Wind Resource Potential in South Korea (남한 풍력자원 잠재량의 예비적 산정)

  • The wind resource potentials of South Korea are estimated as preliminary stage using the national wind map which has been being established by numerical wind simulation and GIS (Geographical Information System) exclusion analysis. The wind resource potentials are classifying into theoretical, geographical, technical and implementation potentials and the calculation results are verified by comparing to other countries' potentials. In GIS exclusion, urban, road, water body, national parks and steep slope area are excluded from onshore geographical potential while water depth and offshore distance from the shoreline are applied as offshore exclusion conditions. To estimate implementation potential, dissemination records of European countries are adopted which is about 1/8 of geographical potential. The implementation potential of South Korea would correspond 12.5GW which is 1.7 times of the national wind energy dissemination target until 2030.

  • Our goal is the development of a system that estimates the location of interested point in a room with accuracy and low cost. Non-contacting position estimating method is widely used in various areas. Among these methods, acoustic signal-based method is the cheapest and provides reasonably accurate estimation as a result of many research efforts. Most of the acoustic-signal-based three-dimensional location estimators such as 3D sonic digitizer are using the ultrasound, and are organized with two procedures; time-of-flight (TOF) estimation and localization estimation.   • The purpose of this case study is to reduce the flaw and reconstruction occur at the level of construction by determining the propriety of estimate and error on a drawing and specification at working design level through case studies of BIM application at the level of design review. As a preliminary to apply BIM technology, it is needed to review the drawing, and then it is required to define BIM range by selecting the section in which construction error occurs frequently except for the type of part that is constructed repeatedly. At the execution level, the drawing is reviewed vertically, horizontally and spatially by proceeding structure and finish modeling on the defined BIM range, and also the propriety of estimate and error on the drawing and specification are examined. We aim to raise the completion rate, improve quality of construction, reduce the cost for construction and shorten period of construction by preparing for the error on the drawing and specification in advance through this review procedures.

  • A maglev train records a host of physical variables such as gaps, voltages and currents for suspension control and monitoring purposes. These data available from a maglev contains wealth of information that can be explored for various uses. One possible of such application is to use the gap data to estimate the shape of the rail, especially at the joints where rails are connected. The eddy current sensors that measure the gap between the rail and the car body produce large peaks around the joints. The suspension controller discards these peaks. Since the shape of the peaks is related to the joint, however, these peaks can be utilized to estimate the shape of the joints. In this paper, we present preliminary results on estimating the joint shape using the peak data. The results show that the approach is promising, albeit several technical difficulties to overcome.

  • The authors evaluated the degree of permanent tooth wear in order to make the basic date that are necessary to estimate the age. 10443 teeth of 389 individuals with known age were selected to estimate the degree of tooth wear. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The degree of tooth wear was decreased in males and females with aging. (P<0.001) 2. The degree of tooth wear in males in higher than that of females.(P<0.05) 3. The decision coefficient increased gradually from anterior teeth to posterior teeth.

  • The two most important tasks of icebreakers are first to secure a sailing route by breaking the thick sea ice and second to sail efficiently herself for purposes of exploration and transportation in the polar seas. The resistance of icebreakers is a priority factor at the preliminary design stage; not only must their sailing efficiency be satisfied, but the design of the propulsion system will be directly affected. Therefore, the performance of icebreakers must be accurately calculated and evaluated through the use of model tests in an ice tank before construction starts. In this paper, a new procedure is developed, based on model tests, to estimate a ship's ice breaking resistance during continuous ice-breaking in ice. Some of the factors associated with crushing failures are systematically considered in order to correctly estimate her ice-breaking resistance. This study is intended to contribute to the improvement of the techniques for ice resistance prediction with ice breaking ships.

  • Microphytobenthos that supply nutrients to the intertidal ecosystem play an important part as a primary producer. If we estimate distribution and density of microphytobenthos, we can possibly calculate a volume of primary product in the tidal flat and its effect to the intertidal ecosystem. To estimate the portion of microphytobenthos, we used a linear spectral unmixing (LSU) method. LSU is a tool for inference the proportions of the pure components (or end-members) in a mixed pixel. The selection of end-members is critical to LSU. The end-members can be selected either from spectral libraries built from field surveys or from a remotely sensed image. We compared the two approaches of end-member selection, and the preliminary results showed end-members from from spectral library are as effective as those from image itself.

  • In this paper, recursive least square algorithm is presented to estimate the parameters of step motor under low-speed operation. Parameter estimation is important for compensating the input current by calculating the ratio of the motor torque constant and detent torque constant that causes torque-ripple in low-speed applications. On-line parameter estimation process is a preliminary procedure to apply step motor to adaptive control. Computer simulation shows that the estimated parameters converge in finite time.

  • This paper presents the preliminary studies on measurements of dynamic torque in the rotating shaft by utilizing the magnetic lattice. The intensity of torque can be detected as the phase differences between two magnetic sinusoidal signals recorded on magnetic tapes wound on the shaft. This research describes, from the data concerning with phase differences including noise, a method of signal processing to estimate the true value of the torque.

  • Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut (BATC) survey is a long term project to map the spectral energy distribution of various objects using 15 intermediate band filters and aims to cover about 450 sq degrees of northern sky. The SED information, combined with image structure information, is used to classify objects into several stellar and galaxy categories as well as QSO candidates. In this paper, we present a preliminary setup of robust data reduction procedure recently developed at NCU and also briefly discuss general classification scheme: redshift estimate, and automatic detection of variable objects.
