A fatigue damage accumulation model based on the continuum damage mechanics theory was developed where modulus decay ratios in tension and shear were used as indicators for damage variables D. In the model, the damage variables are considered to be second-order tensors. Then, the maximum principal damage variable, $D^*$ is introduced. According to the similarity to the principal stress, $D^*$ is obtained as the maximum eigen value of damage tensor [D]. Under proportional tension and torsion loadings, fatigue lives were satisfactorily predicted at any combined stress ratios using the present model in which the Fatigue characteristics only under uniaxial tension and pure torsion loadings were needed. Fatigue life prediction under uniaxial tension and pure torsion loadings, was performed based on the damage mechanics using boundary element method.
Background: Adnexal torsion results in ischemia of structures distal to twisted pedicle and acute onset of pain is responsible for about 3% of all gynecologic emergencies. Ovarian torsion classically occurs in a pathological enlarged ovary, as with cancer, but diagnosis remains a challenge. Objective: Our purpose was to evaluate clinical risk factors predictive of torsion with gangrenous adnexa. Material and methods: A retrospective descriptive study and chart review of surgically proven ovarian torsion/adnexal torsion cases at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Prapokklao Hospital, Chanthaburi, Thailand between January 2011 and December 2015 was conducted. Result: Seventy-eight cases were identified. Mean age at presentation was 35.5 years. The average maximum diameter of the ovarian tumors was 10.8 cm. The percentage of gangrenous ovarian cysts in this study was 46.2 (36/78). The precision to determine the pathological site by patient, physician and ultrasonography was 8.5, 24.2 and 83.3 percent, respectively with statistically significant variation. Conclusion: Ovarian/adnexal torsion remains a challenge condition especially in young nulliparous women. Sophisticated investigation does not guarantee ovary preservation. Combining clinical acumen, appropriate tests and detailed consideration may be the best practice at the present time.
An analytical model with tension softening for the prediction of the capacity of prestressed concrete beams under pure torsion and under torsion combined with shear and flexure is introduced. The proposed approach employs bilinear stress-strain relationship with post cracking tension softening branch for the concrete in tension and special failure criteria for biaxial stress states. Further, for the solution of the governing equations a special numerical scheme is adopted which can be applied to elements with practically any cross-section since it utilizes a numerical mapping. The proposed method is mainly applied to plain prestressed concrete elements, but is also applicable to prestressed concrete beams with light transverse reinforcement. The aim of the present work is twofold; first, the validation of the approach by comparison between experimental results and analytical predictions and second, a parametrical study of the influence of concentric and eccentric prestressing on the torsional capacity of concrete elements and the interaction between torsion and shear for various levels of prestressing. The results of this investigation presented in the form of interaction curves, are compared to experimental results and code provisions.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of 56 reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The reported results include the behaviour curves, the failure modes and the values of the pre-cracking torsional stiffness, the cracking and ultimate torsional moments and the corresponding twists. The influence of the volume of stirrups, the height to width ratios and the arrangement of longitudinal bars on the torsional behaviour is discussed. In order to describe the entire torsional behaviour of the tested beams, the combination of two different analytical models is used. The prediction of the elastic till the first cracking part is achieved using a smeared crack analysis for plain concrete in torsion, whereas for the description of the post-cracking response the softened truss model is used. A simple modification to the softened truss model to include the effect of confinement is also attempted. Calculated torsional behaviour of the tested beams and 21 beams available in the literature are compared with the experimental ones and a very good agreement is observed.
An analytical approach for the prediction of the behaviour of steel-fiber reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion is described. The analysis method employs a special stress-strain model with a non-linear post cracking branch for the material behaviour in tension. Predictions of this model for the behaviour of steel-fiber concrete in direct tension are also presented and compared with results from tests conducted for this reason. Further in this work, the validation of the proposed torsional analysis by providing comparisons between experimental curves and analytical predictions, is attempted. For this purpose a series of 10 steel-fiber concrete beams with various cross-sections and steel-fiber volume fractions tested in pure torsion, are reported here. Furthermore, experimental information compiled from works around the world are also used in an attempt to establish the validity of the described approach based on test results of a broad range of studies. From these comparisons it is demonstrated that the proposed analysis describes well the behaviour of steel-fiber concrete in pure torsion even in the case of elements with non-rectangular cross-sections.

It has been observed in the past that, the reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns are very often subjected to torsional moment in addition to flexure and shear during seismic vibration. Ignoring torsion in the design can trigger unexpected shear failure of the columns (Farhey et al. 1993). Performance based seismic design is a popular design philosophy which calls for accurate prediction of the hysteresis behavior of structural elements to ensure safe and economical design under earthquake loading. However, very few investigations in the past focused on the development of analytical models to accurately predict the response of RC members under cyclic torsion. Previously developed hysteresis models are not readily applicable for torsional loading owing to significant pinching and stiffness degradation associated with torsion (Wang et al. 2014). The present study proposes an improved polygonal hysteresis model which can accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of RC circular and square columns under torsion. The primary curve is obtained from mechanics based softened truss model for torsion. The proposed model is validated with test data of two circular and two square columns. A good correlation is observed between the predicted and measured torque-twist behavior and dissipated energy.

ACI 318-99 predicts the torsional moment of reinforced concrete members by assuming that the angle of diagonal compressive concrete is equal to 45 degree. However, this angle depends on the difference of longitudinal and transverse steel ratios. This paper compares the torsional moments calculated by ACI 318-99 code and a truss model considering compatibility of strains. The comparison indicated that the torsion equation in ACI code underestimated the real torsional moment of reinforced concrete beam in which the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement was larger than that of transverse reinforcement.

Time dependent analysis of prestressed concrete beams subjected to pure torsion is studied. The present theory covers the behavior from the service load range to the ultimate stage. The tensile resistance of concrete is appropriately considered. The biaxial stress effects due to diagonal cracking are also taken into account. The time dependent aging, creep and shringkage effects are modelled by employing the equivalent nonmechanical torque concept. The present theory allows more accurate prediction of the service load behavior of pretressed concrete members.

In staically indeterminate structures torsional stiffness is an important factor for prediction of mechanical behavior at all loading stages in reinfored concrete beams, which also for calculation of torsional moment. This paper proposes equation for postcracking torsional stiffness of reinforced concrete beams under pure torsion, which is derived considering the equilibrium and compatibility condition for shear panel based on the variable angle space truss model. The equation describes well the effect according to the variation of aspect ratio and steel volume ratio per unit concrete volume. It agress with experimental results in this paper as well as available literature.
