  • We demonstrate here that an improvement in precursor film density (green density) leads to a great enhancement in the photovoltaic performance of CuInSe2 (CISe) thin film solar cells fabricated with Cu-In nanoparticle precursor films via chemical solution deposition. A cold-isostatic pressing (CIP) technique was applied to uniformly compress the precursor film over the entire surface (measuring 3~4 cm2) and was found to increase its relative density (particle packing density) by ca. 20%, which resulted in an appreciable improvement in the microstructural features of the sintered CISe film in terms of lower porosity, reduced grain boundaries, and a more uniform surface morphology. The low-bandgap (Eg=1.0 eV) CISe PV devices with the CIP-treated film exhibited greatly enhanced open-circuit voltage (VOC, from 0.265 V to 0.413 V) and fill factor (FF, from 0.34 to 0.55), as compared to the control devices. As a consequence, an almost 3-fold increase in the average power conversion efficiency, 3.0 to 8.2% (with the highest value of 9.02%), was realized without an anti-reflection coating. A diode analysis revealed that the enhanced VOC and FF were essentially attributed to the reduced reverse saturation current density (j0) and diode ideality factor (n). This is associated with the suppressed recombination, likely due to the reduction in recombination sites such as grain/air surfaces (pores), inter-granular interfaces, and defective CISe/CdS junctions in the CIP-treated device. From the temperature dependences of VOC, it was confirmed that the CIP-treated devices suffer less from interface recombination.

  • The effects of the addition of nanocrystalline Y2O3 powder on the microstructure and superconducting properties have been investigated in YBCO films prepared by TFA-MOD process. Precursor solution doped with extra $Y_2O_3$ Powder was prepared by adding $Y_2O_3$ powder into a stoichiometic precursor solution with a cation ratio of Y:Ba:Cu=1:2:3. Coating solutions with and without $Y_2O_3$ doping were coated on $LaAlO_3(100)$ single crystal by a dip coating method, cacination and conversion heat treatments were performed at the controlled atmosphere containing water vapor Current carry capacity(Jc) of YBCO film was enhanced about 50% by $Y_2O_3$ doping. It is thought that the enhancement of Jc is due to the better connectivity of YBCO grains and/or the flux pinning by the presence of nanocrystalline $Y_2O_3$ Particles embedded in YBCO grains.

  • YBCO coated conductors (CC) on the $CeO_2$-buffered IBAD-MgO template were fabricated by metal-organic deposition (MOD) Process with Ba-trifluoroacetate and fluorine-free Y and Cu precursor materials. The precursor solution was coated on $CeO_2$-buffered IBAD MgO templates using the multiple dip-coating method, decomposed into inorganic precursors by pyrolysis up to $400^{\circ}C$ within 3 h, and finally fired at $740{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. Microstructure, texture, and superconducting properties of YBCO films were found highly sensitive to both the firing temperature and time. The high critical current density ($J_C$) of $1.15\;MA/cm^2$ at 77.3K in the self-field could be obtained from $1\;{\mu}m$ thick YBCO CC, fired at $740^{\circ}C$ for 3.5 h, implying that high performance YBCO CC is producible on IBAD MgO template. Further enhancement of $J_C$ values is expected by improving the in-plane texture of $CeO_2$-buffer layer and avoiding the metal substrate contamination.

  • Activated carbon-nickel (II) oxide (AC-NiO) electrodes were studied as materials for the capacitive deionization (CDI) of aqueous sodium chloride solution. AC-NiO electrodes were fabricated through physical mixing and low-temperature heating of precursor materials. The amount of NiO in the electrodes was varied and its effect on the deionization performance was investigated using a single-pass mode CDI setup. The pure activated carbon electrode showed the highest specific surface area among the electrodes. However, the AC-NiO electrode with approximately 10 and 20% of NiO displayed better deionization performance. The addition of a dielectric material like NiO to the carbon material resulted in the enhancement of the electric field, which eventually led to an improved deionization performance. Among all as-prepared electrodes, the AC-NiO electrode with approximately 10% of NiO gave the highest salt adsorption capacity and charge efficiency, which are equal to 7.46 mg/g and 90.1%, respectively. This finding can be attributed to the optimum enhancement of the physical and chemical characteristics of the electrode brought by the addition of the appropriate amount of NiO.

  • It is becoming increasingly clear that the inflammatory reaction can be ascribed to a complex array of mediators generated and released from activated phagocytes. In this study, the effect of PAF on interleukin-1(IL-1) activity by rat alveolar macrophages(AM) was examined using thymocyte proliferation assay in the supernate of sample obtained after 24 hr culture. When AM were cultured with PAF alone, no change in IL-1 activity was observed. However, the combined addition of PAF and muramyl dipeptide(MDP) or lipopolysaccharide(LPS) to AM cultures markedly enhanced IL-1 activity by 2-3 fold compared with AM cultures with the stimulant alone in a concentration dependent fashion. The peack effect was found at $10^{-8}$ M PAF with MDP and $10^{-14}$ M PAF with LPS. the effect of PAF was also tested in silica, toxic respirable dust, -added AM cultures as well as in the cultures containing bacterial compounds. Although silica did not stimulate the IL-1 activity, PAF could enhance IL-1 activity by 2 fold above the value of the silica-treated AM cultures with the peak response at $10^{-12}$ M PAF. Optimal enhancement of IL-1 activity occured when MDP and PAF were present together at the initiation of the 24 hr AM cultures. Additionaly, the biologically inactive precursor/metabolite of PAF, lyso-PAF failed to induce enhancement of IL-1 activity. When the specific, but structurally different PAF receptor antagonists, BN 52021($10^{-5}$ M) and CV 3988($10^{-5}$ M) was treated 15 min before addition of PAF($10^{-8}$ M) and MDP$(10\;{\mu}g/ml)$ to the AM cultures, it markedly inhibited the enhancement of IL-1 activity induced by PAF. The effects of these PAF antagonists were also observed in LPS$(10\;{\mu}g/ml)$-stimulated cells. Collectively, these data suggest that PAF enhances IL-1 activity by interaction with a specific receptor.

  • Beef producers are trying to produce not only better quality but also greater quantity of beef in order to meet the preferences of some consumers at a lower cost. This can be accomplished if we understand the factors regulating lipid deposition in intramuscular adipose tissue and the tenderness of meat. Propylene glycol (PG) might be used as a precursor of intramuscular fat synthesis especially in the late period of fattening because adipose tissue in ruminants is thought to mature sequentially in abdominal, intermuscular, subcutaneous and intramuscular depots. The action of cholecalciferol supplementation has been verified in producing more tender meat through the enhancement of calpain activity over the postmortem ageing period. A synergistic effect can be expected if the dietary cation and anion difference (DCAD) technique is used in combination with dietary supplementation of cholecalciferol. In another approach, the optimization of hormonal implant use also may provide similarly marbled beef at a much lower cost.

  • We have synthesized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using chicken feathers (poultry waste) and Bacillus subtilis RSE163. Disulfide reductase and keratinase produced by Bacillus subtilis during the degradation of chicken feather has been used to reduce Au3+ from HAuCl4 precursor to produce gold nanoparticles. The synthesized biogenic GNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and zeta potential measurements. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the presence of protein capping on synthesized GNPs, imparting multifunctionality to the GNP surface. Furthermore, the nontoxic nature of biogenic GNPs was insured by interaction with Escherichia coli (ATCC11103), where TEM images and enhancement of growth rate of E. coli in log phase signified their nontoxic nature. The results indicate that the synthesis of biocompatible GNPs using poultry waste may find potential applications in drug delivery and sensing.

  • In developing high temperature molds with advantages of the sand and precision (investment) castings, mechanical properties of the mold were improved through homogeneous coating of starting powders with an inorganic binder and improvement of fabrication process. Beads with mullite composition were employed for properties of the mold under high temperature, which was compared with artificial sands. Precursors of silica and sodium oxide were used as starting materials for an inorganic binder to achieve homogeneous coating on the starting powders. Strength was enhanced by the glass phase converted from the inorganic binder through heat treatment process. Also, two kinds of process, wet and dry processes, were incorporated to prepare mold specimens. Consequently, fabrication process of the mold with superior strength and high temperature applicability, compared with the previous molds for sand casting, could be suggested through control of the starting material and enhancement of the vitrification efficiency.
