  • The effects of characteristic condition number on the convergence of preconditioned Euler equations were investigated. The two-dimensional preconditioned Euler equations adopting Choi and Merkle's preconditioning and the temperature preconditioning are considered. Preconditioned Roe's FDS scheme was adopted for spatial discretization and preconditioned LU-SGS scheme was used for time integration. It is shown that the convergence characteristics of the Euler equations are strongly affected by the characteristic condition number, and there is an optimal characteristic condition number for a problem. The optimal characteristic condition numbers for the Choi and Merkle's preconditioning and temperature preconditioning are different.

  • The computations of chemically reacting laminar and turbulent flows are performed using the preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver coupled with turbulent transport and multi-species equations. A low-Reynolds number $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model proposed by Chien is used. The presence of the turbulent kinetic energy tenn in the momentum equation can materially affect the overall stability of the fluids-turbulence system. Because of this coupling effect, a fully coupled formulation is desirable and this approach is taken in the present study. Choi and Merkle's preconditioning technique is used to overcome the convergence difficulties occurred at low speed flows. The numerical scheme used for the present study is based on the implicit upwind ADI algorithm and is validated through the comparisons of computational and experimental results for laminar methane-air diffusion flame and $ H_2/O_2$ reacting turbulent shear flow. Preconditioning formulation shows better convergence characteristics than that of non-preconditioned system by approximately five times as much.

  • Comprehensive mathematical comparison of numerical dissipation vector was made for a compressible and the preconditioned version Roe's Riemann solvers. Choi and Merkle type preconditioning method was selected from the investigation of the convergence characteristics of the various preconditioning methods for the flows over a two-dimensional bump. The investigation suggests a way of migration from a compressible code to a preconditioning code with a minor changes in Eigenvalues while maintaining the same code structure. Von Neumann stability condition and viscous Jacobian were considered additionally to improve the stability and accuracy for the viscous flow analysis. The developed code was validated through the applications to the standard validation problems.

  • A hypertonic solution of sorbitol was used to precondition Douglas-fir and Western hemlock plug seedlings to improve desiccation resistance. Seedlings were preconditioned by soaking their root balls in water, -0.75 or -1.50 MPa sorbitol solution for 22 hr, and then exposed to desiccation conditions for 8 days. During the desiccation period, a transpirational water loss was significantly reduced by the sorbitol preconditioning, with its effect positively depending on concentration. This preconditioning-induced reduction in water loss was mainly caused by the decline in needle stomatal conductance. Sorbitol-induced stomatal control was more closely associated with reduction in plant water potential, rather than increase in abscisic acid concentrations. After rehydration of stressed-plants, most of the preconditioned seedlings with sorbitol were survived, while only 35% of Douglas-fir and 28% of Western hemlock seedlings treated with water were alive. The post-growth was significantly greater in the preconditioned seedlings than only water-treated seedlings. These results suggested that the earlier stomatal control with sorbitol-facilitated preconditioning could play a role in improving desiccation resistance of evergreen woody plants at transplanting in the field where water supply is limited or dry conditions are prevailing.

  • In two dimensional incompressible flaws, a preconditioning technique called Hierarchical Iterative Procedure(HIP) has been implemented on a SUPG finite element formulation. By using the SUPG formulation, one can escape from the LBB constraint and hence achieve an equal order formulation. In this paper, we increased the order of interpolation up to cubic. The conjugate gradient squared(CGS) method is used for the outer iteration, and the HIP for the preconditioning for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The hierarchical elements has been used to achieve a higher order accuracy in fluid flaw analyses, but a proper efficient iterative procedure for higher order finite element formulation has not been available so far. The numerical results by the present HIP for the lid driven cavity flaw showed the present procedure to be stable, very efficient and useful in flaw analyses in conjunction with hierarchical elements.

  • The objective of this study is to apply preconditioning to Wavier-Stokes equations with a turbulence model. The concept of a pseudo sonic speed was adopted. Roe's FDS was used for spatial discretization, LU-SGS scheme was used for time integration. In order to test the algorithms, the low speed flows around NACA airfoils and the flows through supersonic nozzle were calculated. The algorithm developed in the present study shows good performance in the calculations of low speed viscous flows and supersonics flows.

  • In this paper, preconditioning method is parallelized on fast-ethernet PC cluster. The algorithm is based on scaling the pressure terms in the momemtum equations and preconditioning the conservation equations to circumvent numerical difficulties at low Mach numbers. Parallelization is performed using a domain decomposition technique(DDT) and message passing between sub-domains are taken from the MPI library. The results are shown to have good convergence properties at all Mach number on the circular arc Bump and are capable of reasonable predicting two-dimensional turbulent flows on DCA compressor cascade.

  • We investigated whether ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects liver against cold ischemic injury using isolated perfused rat liver. Rat livers were preconditioned by 5 minutes of ischemia and 5 minutes of reperfusion and preserved for 30 hours at $4^{\circ}C$ in University of Wisconsin solution. Livers were then reperfused for 120 minutes. Oxygen uptake and bile flow in ischemic livers markedly decreased during reperfusion. These decreases were prevented by IPC. Portal pressure was elevated in cold ischemic and reperfused livers and this elevation was prevented by IPC. Lactate dehydrogenase and purine nucleoside phosphorylase activities markedly increased during reperfusion. These increases were prevented by IPC. The ratio of reduced glutathione to glutathione disulfide was lower in ischemic livers. This decrease was prevented by IPe. Our findings suggest that IPC protects the liver against the deleterious effect of cold ischemia/reperfusion, and this protection is associated with the reduced oxidative stress.

  • Generally, Compressible Navier-Stokes codes are used to solve high mach number flows. But, Most of high mach number flows embrace low mach number flows. This phenomenon results in low convergence rate and non-physical solution in CFD analysis. So Many researchers developed preconditioning technique to solve these problems. This Study presents how to modify previous compressible N-S computer code with little changes of structure into preconditioned compressible N-S code applying Roe's Approximate Riemann Solver. And this study show developed preconditioning code is very well operated at all mach number flows.

  • AILU type preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation of the interaction of rigid cylinder with incompressible fluid flow have been devised and tested by solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a rigid cylinder with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 mixed finite element formulation coupled with combined formulation. Four different preconditioners were devised for the two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation extending the idea of Nam et al., which was proposed for the preconditioning of a P2P1 mixed finite element formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It was found that PC-III or PC-IV among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence rate for some bench-mark problems.
