Magnesium alloy is the lightest practical metal. It has excellent specific strength and recyclability as well as abundant reserves, and is expected to be a next-generation structural metal material following aluminum alloy. This paper investigated the possibility of thin plate fabrication by applying a overheating treatment to the melt drag method, and investigating the surface shape of the thin plate, grain size, grain size distribution, and Vickers hardness. When the overheating treatment was applied to magnesium alloy, the grains were refined, so it is expected that further refinement of grains can be realized if the overheating treatment is applied to the melt drag method. By applying overheating treatment, it was possible to fabricate a thin plate of magnesium alloy using the melt drag method, and a microstructure with a minimum grain size of around 12 ㎛ was obtained. As the overheating treatment temperature increased, void defects increased on the roll surface of the thin plate, and holding time had no effect on the surface shape of the thin plate. The fabricated thin plate showed uniform grain size distribution. When the holding times were 0 and 30 min, the grain size was refined, and the effect of the holding time became smaller as the overheating treatment temperature increased. As the overheating temperature becomes higher, the grain size becomes finer, and the finer the grain size is, the higher the Vickers hardness.

Superhydrophobic surfaces have been expected to be able to provide considerable performance improvements and introduce innovative functions across diverse industries. However, representative methods for fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces include etching the substrate or attaching nanosized particles, but they have been limited by problems such as applicability to only a few materials or low adhesion between particles and substrates, resulting in a short lifetime of superhydrophobic properties. In this work, we report a novel coating technique that can achieve superhydrophobicity by electrophoretic deposition of aluminum nitride (AlN) nanopowders and their self-bonding to form a surface structure without the use of binder resins through a hydrolysis reaction. Furthermore, by using a water-soluble adhesive as a temporary shield for the electrophoretic deposited AlN powders, hierarchical aluminum hydroxide structures can be strongly adhered to a variety of electrically conductive substrates. This binder-free technique for creating hierarchical structures that exhibit strong adhesion to a variety of substrates significantly expands the practical applicability of superhydrophobic surfaces.
Over last three decades, various biomaterials has been developed and applied in the biomedical market. The practical utilization of biomaterials depends on the study about an appropriate physical and biological response of biomaterials. The modification of biomaterials using various surface treatment methods has recently become an interesting topic in the field of surface engineering. A padient surface is the surface on which a gradually varying chemical composition exists along its length. A large number of research groups have been focused on the preparation of gradient surfaces. Such gradient surface is of particular interest for basic and applied studies of the interactions between biological species and surfaces since the effect of a selected property like wettability or chemical composition can be examined in a single experiment on one surface. The present review focuses on the preparation and characterization of various gradient surfaces, and their interactions with biological species.
Surface texturing is the latest technology for processing grooves or dimples on the friction surface of a machine. When appropriately applied, it can reduce friction and significantly increase durability. Despite many studies over the past 20 years, most are isothermal (ISO) analyses in which the viscosity of the lubricant is constant. In practice, the viscosity changes significantly owing to the heat generated by the viscous shear of the lubricant and film-temperature boundary condition (FTBC). Although many thermohydrodynamic (THD) analyses have been performed on various sliding bearings, only few results for surface-textured bearings have been reported. This study investigates the effects of the FTBC and groove number on the THD lubrication characteristics of a surface-textured parallel thrust bearing with multiple rectangular grooves. The continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations with temperature-viscosity-density relations are numerically analyzed using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. The results show the pressure and temperature distributions, variations of load-carrying capacity (LCC), and friction force with four FTBCs. The FTBCs greatly influence the lubrication characteristics of surface-textured parallel thrust bearings. A groove number that maximizes the LCC exists, which depends on the FTBC. ISO analysis overestimates the LCC but underestimates friction reduction. Additional analysis of various temperature boundary conditions is required for practical applications.

Recently, extensive studies have been carried out to enhance various performance aspects such as the durability, lifespan, and hardness by combining diverse materials or developing novel materials. The utilization of superhydrophobic surfaces, particularly in the automotive, textile, and medical device industries, has gained momentum to achieve improved performance and efficiency. Superhydrophobicity refers to a surface state where the contact angle when water droplets fall is above 150°, while the contact angle during sliding motion is smaller than 10°. Superhydrophobic surfaces offer the advantage of water droplets not easily sliding off, maintaining a cleaner state as the droplets leave the surface. Surface modification involves two fundamental steps to achieve superhydrophobicity: surface roughness increase and surface energy reduction. However, existing methods, such as time-consuming processes and toxic organic precursors, still face challenges. In this study, we propose a method for superhydrophobic surface modification using lasers, aiming to create roughness in micro/nanostructures, ensuring durability while improving the production time and ease of fabrication. The mechanical durability of superhydrophobic samples treated with lasers is comparatively evaluated against chemical etching samples. The experimental results demonstrate superior mechanical durability through the laser treatment. Therefore, this research provides an effective and practical approach to superhydrophobic surface modification, highlighting the utility of laser treatment.

Many researches are carried out for developing the technology to substitute the surface sizing, although this process improves physical properties and water resistance of paper. This is because surface sizing has fundamental limitation to increase drying energy consumption and to restrict speed of paper machine. However, practical and effective technologies were not developed yet. In this study, we investigated the possibility of the substitution of surface sizing using internal starches, such as cationic starch and oxidized starch. To identify effects of internal starches on physical and optical properties, papers were not only made by adding internal starches into pulp slurry but papers surface sized with oxidized starch were also prepared to compare physical and optical properties. Consequently, tensile strength and internal bond of paper containing internal starches were higher than those of surface sized paper by controlling the type and addition level of cationic starch.
This study proposes a model for road surface temperature prediction on basis of the heat-energy balance equation between atmosphere and road surface. The overall model is consisted of two types of modules: 1) Canopy 1 is used to describe heat transfer between soil surface and atmosphere; and 2) Canopy 2 can reflect the characteristics of pavement type. Input data used in the model run is obtained from the Korea Meteorological For model validation, the observed and predicted surface temperature data are compared using data collected on MoonEui Bridge along CheongWon-Sangju Expressway, and the comparison is made on winter and other seasons separately. Analysis results show that average difference between two temperatures lies within ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ which is considered as appropriate from a micrometeorology point of view. The model proposed in this paper can be adopted as a useful tool in practical applications for winter maintenance. This study being a fundamental research is anticipated to be a starting point for further development of robust surface road temperature prediction algorithms.

The research of 3-dimensional (3-D) scaffold for tissue engineering has been widely investigated as the importance of the 3-D scaffold increased. 3-D scaffold is needed to support for cells to proliferate and maintain their biological functions. Furthermore, its architecture defines the shape of the new bone and cartilage growth. Polycaprolactone (PCL) has been one of the most promising materials for fabricating 3-D scaffold owing to its excellent mechanical property and biocompatibility. However, there are practical problems for using it, in vitro and in vivo; extracellular matrix components and nutrients cannot penetrate into the inner space of scaffold, due to its hydrophobic property, and thus cell seeding and attachment onto the inner surface remain as a challenge. Thus, the surface modification strategy of 3-D PCL scaffold is prerequisite for successful tissue engineering. Herein, we utilized a mussel-inspired approach for surface modification of 3-D PCL scaffold. Modification of 3-D PCL scaffolds was carried out by simple immersion of scaffolds into the dopamine solution and stimulated body fluid, and as a result, hydroxyapatite-immobilized 3-D PCL scaffolds were obtained. After surface modification, the wettability of 3-D PCL scaffold was considerably changed, and infiltration of the pre-osteoblastic cells into the 3-D scaffold followed by the attachment onto the surface was successfully achieved.

This paper presents a numerical simulation method for the flow around advancing ships in regular waves by using a rectilinear grid system. Because the grid lines do not consist with body surface in the rectilinear grid system, the body geometries are defined by the interaction points of those grid lines and the body surface. For the satisfaction of body boundary conditions, no-slip and divergence free conditions are imposed on the body surface and body boundary cells, respectively. Meanwhile, free surface is defined with the modified marker density method. The pressure on the free surface is determined to make the pressure gradient terms of the governing equations continuous, and the velocity around the free surface is calculated with the pressure on the free surface. To validate the present numerical method, a vortex induced vibration (VIV) phenomenon and flows around an advancing Wigley III ship model in various regular waves are simulated, and the results are compared with existing and corresponding research data. Also, to check the applicability to practical ship model, flows around KRISO Container Ship (KCS) model advancing in calm water are numerically simulated. On the simulations, the trim and the sinkage are set free to compare the running attitude with some other experimental data. Moreover, flows around the KCS model in regular waves are also simulated.
