  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate cardiovascular regulation during passive standing (PS) after ethanol ingestion by spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in flushed and nonflushed subjects. Of 24 young male subjects, 8 belonged to flushed group (F) and 16 to nonflushed group (NF). Two sessions of 10-min PS were performed before and after ethanol (0.5 g/kg) ingestion. Powers of R-R interval variability in very low frequency $(VLF,\;0{\sim}0.05\;Hz),$ low frequency $(LF,\;0.05{\sim}0.15\;Hz)$ and high frequency $(HF,\;0.15{\sim}0.50\;Hz)$ bands, normalized powers (LFn and HFn) and LF/HF ratio were obtained. After ethanol ingestion, F showed higher heart rate than NF. PS increased LFn $(+22.9{\pm}3.6\;in\;NF,\;+12.8{\pm}4.7$ in F, in normalized units) and LF/HF $(+3.10{\pm}0.57\;in\;NF,\;+3.00{\pm}1.08\;in\;F)$ and decreased HFn powers. Ethanol ingestion increased LFn and LF/HF and decreased HFn. PS after ethanol resulted in higher LFn and LF/HF and lower HFn than the prior PS. F showed a greater and more sustained HRV change than NF after ethanol. In conclusion, PS or ethanol ingestion increased LFn and LF/HF and decreased HFn. Flushed subjects showed an accentuated HRV response to ethanol.

  • We investigate the adaptive channel attenuation compensation of satellite OFDMA downlink users for minimum PAR (Peak to Average power Ratio), which is one of the main challenging issues in satellite OFDMA application. First, we analyze and compare PAR performances of two main different channel attenuation compensation schemes for OFDMA, i.e., PC-OFDMA (power control OFDMA) and AMC-OFDMA (Adaptive Modulation and Coding). While AMC-OFDMA maintains the constant transmission powers through entire user data subcarriers, PC-OFDMA has non-uniform subcarrier transmission powers because subcarrier powers are separately controlled to compensate each user's sub-channel attenuation. We newly found the fact that non-uniform subcarrier power in PC-OFDMA achieves rather reduced PAR compared to AMC-OFDMA and the amount of reduction becomes larger as the power differences among subcarriers increase. Also, there is an additional PAR reduction in PC-OFDMA by optimizing subcarrier grouping scheme for user's sub-channelization.

  • In this paper, using received channel information, we analyze performance in MIMO multiuser system in low-to-medium mobile speed by selecting each user's constellations, powers, and transmit antennas. Given a target of symbol error, we determine each user's constellations, powers, selected tranprobability smit antennas such that the required signal-to-noise(SNR) is minimized for MMSE, V-BLAST receiver according to each user's information and channel estimation information. When we do power control with antenna selection technique through uplink channels of MIMO system in low-to-medium mobile speed, we analyze system performance with wireless channel information from Base-Station(BS) to Users. By simulation, it has been shown that the proposed antenna selection scheme for transmitting data offer better performance improvement than all transmit antennas for transmitting data.

  • J. Bernoulli first discovered the method which one can produce those formulae for the sum $S_n(k)=\sum_{{\iota}=1}^n\;{\iota}^k$ for any natural numbers k. After then, there has been increasing interest in Bernoulli and Euler numbers associated with Riemann zeta functions. Recently, Kim have been studied extended q-Bernoulli numbers and q-Euler numbers associated with p-adic q-integral on $\mathbb{Z}_p$, and sums of powers of consecutive q-integers, etc. In this paper, we investigate for the historical background and evolution process of the sums of powers of consecutive q-integers and discuss for Euler zeta functions subjects which are studying related to these areas in the recent.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to propose a new transmission/disequilibrium test(TDT) to test the linkage between genetic markers and disease-susceptibility genes based on haplotypes. Simulation studies were performed to compare the proposed method with that of Zhao et al. in terms of type I error probability and powers. Methods : We estimated the haplotype frequencies using the expectation-maximization(EM) algorithm with parents genotypes taken from a trio dataset, and then constructed a two-way contingency table containing estimated frequencies to all possible pairs of parents haplotypes. We proposed a score test based on differences between column marginals and their corresponding row marginals. The test also involved a covariance structure of marginal differences and their variances. In simulation, we considered a coalescent model with three genetic markers of biallele to investigate the performance of the proposed test under six different configurations. Results : The haplotype-based TDT statistics, our test and Zhao et al.'s test satisfied a type I error probability, but the TDT test based on single locus showed a conservative trend. As expected, the tests based on haplotypes also had better powers than those based on single locus. Our test and that of Zhao et al. were comparable in powers. Conclusion : We proposed a TDT statistic based on haplotypes and showed through simulations that our test was more powerful than the single locus-based test. We will extend our method to multiplex data with affected and/or unaffected sibling(s) or simplex data having only one parent s genotype.

  • Backgrounds: Inpatient Classification System for Korean Medicine (KDRG-KM) was developed and has been applied for monitoring the costs of KM hospitals. Yet severity of patients' condition is not applied in the KDRG-KM. Objectives: This study aimed to develop the severity classification methods for KDRG-KM and assessed the explanation powers of severity adjusted KDRG-KM. Methods: Clinical experts panel was organized based on the recommendations from 12 clinical societies of Korean Medicine. Two expert panel workshops were held to develop the severity classification options, and the Delphi survey was performed to measure CCL(Complexity and Comorbidity Level) scores. Explanation powers were calculated using the inpatient EDI claim data issued by hospitals and clinics in 2012. Results: Two options for severity classification were deduced based on the severity classification principle in the domestic and foreign DRG systems. The option one is to classify severity groups using CCL and PCCL(Patient Clinical Complexity Level) scores, and the option two is to form a severity group with patients who belonged principal diagnosis-secondary diagnosis combinations which prolonged length of stay. All two options enhanced explanation powers less than 1%. For third option, patients who received certain treatments for severe conditions were grouped into severity group. The treatment expense of the severity group was significantly higher than that of other patients groups. Conclusions: Applying the severity classifications using principal diagnosis and secondary diagnoses can advance the KDRG-KM for genuine KM hospitalization. More practically, including patients with procedures for severe conditions in a severity group needs to be considered.

  • Purpose: In this study, the distribution and differences in refractive powers on trial case lenses were investigated. Methods: We measured refractive powers at optical center and periphery using 4 trial case lens sets. According to international standards, the distribution and uniformity in refractive powers were investigated. Results: The lens shapes were different in different kinds of trial case lenses and some of lenses were out of tolerance according international standards. In some cases, the power differences were found between front and back side as well as between optical center and peripheral regions and also the cylindrical power on spherical lens and spherical power on the cylindrical lens were measured. Conclusions: Trial case lens are used to assess the refractive error, therefore, more precise control of the manufacturing process for trial case lenses and more thorough quality control will be required to offer an accurate vision test. More careful attention in using trial case lens is also required.

  • A series of ZnO thin films were grown by radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering with various RF powers on $SiO_2/Si$(100) substrates at $500^{\circ}C$. Thicknesses of the investigated ZnO films were fixed to about 250nm by changing the growth time based on the changes of growth rates with RF powers. All the ZnO thin films were grown with <0001> preferred orientation. Average grain sizes of about 250nm-thick ZnO films evaluated by FE-SEM, AFM, and TEM were increased by decreasing the RF power. Structural properties addressed by FWHM values of XRD (0002) omega rocking curves and their intensities were better for the smaller grain sized ZnO films grown with high RF powers, which implies small values of tilt for smaller grain sized ZnO films. However, optical properties addressed by intensities of band edge emissions from room temperature and low temperature photoluminescence were better for the larger grain sized ZnO films with low RF power, which implies grain boundaries acted as nonradiation recombination centers.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate walking standard time and joint powers of the lower extremities on the changes of illuminations in the elderly women. Ten older women ($70.90{\pm}3.28$ years, $154.70{\pm}3.47$ cm, $53.80{\pm}5.39$ kg) with normal vision and no gait disabilities participated in this study. All the experiments were performed on a level walkway from low to high lighting (six conditions). A 3-dimensional motion capturing system, force-plate, and EMG were used to acquire and analyze walking motion, force, and muscle activity data; the sampling frequency was 100 Hz, 1000 Hz and 1000 Hz respectively. To test the differences on walking standard time and joint powers of the lower extremities between the six lighting conditions, one-way repeated ANOVAs were evaluated. The following results were drawn: First, mean standard time was about 1.3 sec/stride, and velocities were smaller with lighting increasing except 100 Lx. Second, the joint power patterns of ankle and knee were not consistent, but only hip joint power was a greatest in 6 Lx and a smallest in 400 Lx. Third, standard times(100 Lx<300 Lx, 400 Lx) were statistically significant, and hip joint max powers (100 Lx>others) were also statistically significant. But ankle and knee joint max power were not statistically significant. These results showed that standard times from low to high lighting were not consistent, and hip joint of 100 Lx has a greatest rotational torque. We suggested that gait strategies of them as to changing illuminations were not consistent and findings may represent a lack of adaptability in the elderly women.

  • Recent years have witnessed renewed interest in Africa and public diplomacy has emerged as the vital tool being used to cultivate these relations. China has been leading in pursuing stronger economic partnership with Africa while middle powers such as Korea are also intensifying engagement with the continent. While previous studies have analyzed the implications of China's activities in Africa on advanced powers, none has examined them from the paradigm of middle powers. This study fills this gap by assessing China's activities in Africa, their economic engagement and implications for Korea's interest in Africa. The analysis is qualitative based on secondary data from various sources and literature. The study shows that China's public diplomacy strategy involves a high degree of innovation and has evolved to encompass new tools and audiences. China has institutionalized a cooperative model that permeates many aspects of governance institutions in Africa, enabling it to strengthen their relations. This could also be helping China to adjust faster leadership transitions in Africa. Whereas the US is still the most influential country in Africa, China is influential in economic policies and has outstripped the US in infrastructure diplomacy. This could be because African policy makers align more with China's economic model than the US' mainstream economics. Chinese aid to Africa has been diversified to social sectors that are more responsive to the needs of Africa. Trade and investment relations between China and Africa have deepened, but so does trade imbalance since 2010. China mainly imports natural resources and raw materials from Africa. But this product portfolio is not different from Korea and the US. China's energetic insertion in Africa using various strategies has significant implications for countries with ambitions in Africa. Korea can achieve its ambitions in Africa by focusing resources in areas it can leverage its core strengths-such as education and vocational training, environmental policy and development cooperation.
